Avery Ranch Golf Club is a part of the Avery Ranch residential community, 20 minutes northwest of town, that was carved and blasted out of the rocky ranchlands along Brushy Creek. This historically significant area was once home to Indians and robbers, who were drawn to this beautiful setting thick with dense oaks, meandering creeks and abundant wildlife.

The golf course was designed by former Jack Nicklaus designer Andy Raugust, who literally had to use dynamite to blast rock out of the landscape for five holes. His design features two potential signature holes on each nine.

No. 7 doglegs left, and features two scenic carries -- one off the tee and another on the approach. The hole is rather short, providing the chance to be in good position for this most spectacular approach shot on the golf course. Staring at the multi-level green, you’ll notice the huge rock wall fronting the green, the large bunker to the right, and the native cacti to the rear.

Avery Ranch Golf Club's 13th is sure to be considered one of the best par 3s in the Austin area. The 161-yard par 3 features water on the right side, impressive, towering oaks in the back, and a unique ridge of rocks to the right of the green. The reasonable distance makes it a fun challenge, and the hole features a bail out area in case of a miss

Solid Course

I've been playing Avery Ranch for years. It is in good shape, but I was disappointed that they over watered a couple of greens to the point where there was standing water on the greens. On the plus side, got out early and played a quick 3 hour round. Normally I expect a 4.5 hour round.

GOLFING IN NORTHWEST AUSTIN

My brother and myself were in from Cleveland to
move my daughter home from Austin and we
planned on playing a couple rounds of golf. We
given some choices from some local golfers and
selected Avery Ranch based on location. We were
pleasantly surprised with course layout, condition, and
the staff that were helpful and friendly. We were so
pleased that we booked a starting time for 5/4/15, the next morning. My brother and I have be playing
golf for 120 years combined.

poor value

The reason i rate this course a poor value is mainly the greens. They are not anywhere near the condition you would expect for a course charging what Avery does. I've played this course 5 or 6 times since it has opened and the greens were good only one of those times. Everything else is fine. Very frustrating.

Great Place - Slow Pace (that day)

We got on after a tournament, so it was backed up. Our round took 5.5 hours, which is pretty bad. We made the most of it as the course is beautiful and wildlife was abundant

A really nice course - we just caught it on a bad day

very slow play

after 5 hours and 13 holes we gave up and left. seems like a nice course but after being hit into multiple times and having our balls picked up by others we couldn't take it anymore. i guess i should of known when the starter said the group in front of us wanted to play with range balls because they didn't have any of their own

Another Great Experience

I have played this course numerous times and always enjoy coming back when I have some time off. The staff was great from payment to walking off the 18th with clean clubs. The course was in good shape and will be excellent once the greens finish growing in, especially on the front 9. The only negative thing I have to say is regarding the quality and quantity of the range balls. 20 balls is enough to at least stretch your muscles, but when over half of the balls are either completely smooth or have mower damage, it can make it tough to evaluate ball flight and make adjustments. Overall, another great experience and probably the course I would recommend as the best value in the area.

Great course, but pace of play and range balls could be better.

Avery Ranch is a challenging course, and was in very good condition. Very challenging par 3's. Greens rolled very true, and not gimmicky. Pace of play was 4.45-5.0 hours. Never saw a marshal.

Pro shop attendant didn't have a high opinion of GolfNow customers, or the service. I had paid in full but still quoted me a tee time rate. Told me he'd speak with the GM, and come get me on the course if there were issues with my pre-paid time.

They need new range balls. half the balls in my bucket were bald, discolored, basically useless.

On-board GPS system didn't work. 3rd course I've been to this month with the Sprint network Android GPS systems that didn't' work.

I know I wouldn't see my kid to a junior camp there as the instructor sounded more like a drill sergeant, or football coach the way he was barking at the kids.

Avery

Course Conditions:
This is always the question with Avery, and one you'll never get a straight answer about from the pro shop if you call. Fairways are 99% of the time the best in Austin, but greens can really be hit or miss. The 2011 drought taxed them badly and I think this might be the year they finally recover. Right now, they're decent, but the base seems to be there for some really good conditions this summer. When they're (greens) on point, one of the best courses out there.

Layout:
You can test yourself, or have a fun round, just pick a set of tees. Tips require some really good long iron play and an accurate drive. You will need to be able to easily carry 265+ to play blacks, 240+ for golds. If you can't, don't. Wind is always a factor. Par 3's are, IMO, the best.

Staff:
Good, always good.

Walkability:
You can walk, big hike between 9 and 10, 11 and 12, 17 and 18.

Overpriced course with a reputation for trying to make money vs. investing in course conditions

I live in Northwest Austin and used to play @ Avery Ranch just about every weekend. I stopped playing there last year after they raised their rates and due to the consistent poor quality of their greens. I decided to go back today and see if anything had changed. Sadly, it has not. The course still is at least $25 overpriced on the weekends. The greens were spotty at best, and multiple tee boxes had more sand and gravel than grass. I ended up playing as a single after amid-up at the pro shop, and found myself behind two foursomes. When I finally got past the 2nd foursome on #12, I never saw another golfer the rest of the round. How does a single in a cart not catch up to anyone else for 6 holes?? The ranger did nothing to speed up the foursomes ahead of me; they clearly were members who the course didn't want to upset because they are spending money there. I'll go back to playing Falconhead; same price with much better greens and overall course conditions, and much more attentive staff who care about the pace of play.

Good condition for late winter

Course was in great shape for early March. Play with my 14 Year old son (10 hdcp) here a few times a year and are never disappointed. Even with recent sand added to greens they rolled true. A number of walkers on the course but it did not hinder play.

overpriced

It was 1 of 3 local courses that we played on a recent golf trip. It was set up through a PGA pro. We paid the full rate ($90) which is a shame since golfnow seems to have much better rates for all sorts of tee times. The course lay out wasn't bad and the facility itself is nice. The greens were awful. By far the worst greens of the 3 courses we played. This course is fine if you're spending $45 but I would highly recommend going somewhere else if you're spending more money.

Winter golf trip

Came to Austin to play for a winter break. We have played here before. The course is very challenging & was in great shape for the winter, Greens were very fast & smooth. A little more money, but a very nice course. Would not recommend for the beginner golfer or a very short hitter..

Needs improvement to maintain value

Course conditions were OK. Staff were very friendly. The ball cleaners were removed and we were playing in wet conditions. It was very inconvenient. Food choices were limited.

Totally agree. Never seen so many ball marks on greens. Members have no concern for etiquette.

Excellent golf course

I played early morning, in a cold and rainy day, so I had the course to myself. Conditions of the course were immaculate, you have deers and roadrunners in the front nine, and beautiful views. The course is easy to play and read. It has some challenging holes and shots. I had an excellent round and would go back in a heart beat. I shot a 99, second double digit in my record, I just started playing (6 months). I highly recommend this course to any golf player.

great facility

This course its very fair but challenging. Excellent practice facility's. Greens roll like pool tables. Pace of play its good. Lots of tee options for various skill levels. You need a lot of different shots to score. Forced carries on tee shots. Must place the ball on proper side of fairway to get a good look at some greens. Fun to play. Will play again.

Challenging but Fair

Avery Ranch is a challenging course that offers a little bit of everything throughout the 18 holes. It has long par 3 holes, sand and water. Greens were in excellent condition as were the fairways, when I found them.
