Avery Ranch Golf Club
About
Avery Ranch Golf Club is a part of the Avery Ranch residential community, 20 minutes northwest of town, that was carved and blasted out of the rocky ranchlands along Brushy Creek. This historically significant area was once home to Indians and robbers, who were drawn to this beautiful setting thick with dense oaks, meandering creeks and abundant wildlife.
The golf course was designed by former Jack Nicklaus designer Andy Raugust, who literally had to use dynamite to blast rock out of the landscape for five holes. His design features two potential signature holes on each nine.
No. 7 doglegs left, and features two scenic carries -- one off the tee and another on the approach. The hole is rather short, providing the chance to be in good position for this most spectacular approach shot on the golf course. Staring at the multi-level green, you’ll notice the huge rock wall fronting the green, the large bunker to the right, and the native cacti to the rear.
Avery Ranch Golf Club's 13th is sure to be considered one of the best par 3s in the Austin area. The 161-yard par 3 features water on the right side, impressive, towering oaks in the back, and a unique ridge of rocks to the right of the green. The reasonable distance makes it a fun challenge, and the hole features a bail out area in case of a miss

Overall good, fairways could use work
The greens were in really good shape, but a few fairways had very little grass which made approach shots tough. Overall would recommend playing though.
Avery
The course is one of the best in the area. The pace of play was terrible. Even though we had an early morning tee time, there were some beginners in the groups in front of us. 2 hours and 45 minutes to play the front 9 is not acceptable. Not blaming the course but they need to marshall it a little better. The course is always in good shape and enjoyable.
Slow & Overpriced
Having now played it a couple times recently, the biggest problem with the experience is the pace of play & availability of the practice facilities.
I’ve never had a round under 4hr 45mins and unless you’re early to the course in the morning, getting a range spot can be difficult.
The course is in good condition and a fun one to play but the pace of play really brings down the experience. I’d expect this from a municipal course with a super low price but for the premium they charge, it’s a little ridiculous.
Be prepared for a 5 hour round
Nothing said here isn’t said below in other comments but the pace of play is one of the worst of all golf course. Teravista, a sister course isn’t great but I play these two course monthly and Teravista is always 30-1hr faster.
The marshalls just drive around but don’t actually target the source of the problem, otherwise, you’d not see countless reviews of slow play.
The conditions are generally pretty good. The cost is insane but people keep paying it so I guess it’s simple supply and demand…although, I wish they’d charge even more and space the tee times out for a better experience. 8 minute tee time spacing is absurd. When the economy pulls back if it hasn’t already, the demand will fall and they will have cut off their noses to spite their faces. Staff is friendly, the putting green is always packed, they’ve had a small putting green closed for what seems like over a year or more. The range is fine except there’s people who will get 200-300 balls under their membership benefits if free balls and literally stay in bays for hours. They bring snacks and make a whole afternoon out of it…really respectful stuff for the game and just, life in general. Like many reading this, I’ve played 100s of courses, this has to be one of the worst run in the business. Maybe someone should write a letter or tweet or make a video of their experience and send to the PGA of America as this is surely not a top 5 course for all of Austin. But, there’s only so many course around so all is containers keep playing. For the money, star ranch or forest creek or even shadow glen is a much better value…or Teravista
Poor Pace of Play
As usual, another slow round of golf. Good luck finding a spot on the range and putting green. I'm still trying to figure out how they convinced PGA of America to put this course on the top 5 list for austin. They rob you on the green fees.
Aside from all that, the course conditions were good. I'm sure it's a good value if you can play during the week.
Lot of cart path only
Even though it has not rained in a few days, 6 or 7 holes were cart path only for seemingly no reason. Course was beautiful but pace of pay was extremely slow
Pace of play
This course consistently has pace of play issues. Maybe because people pay some of the highest green fees in the area (for a public course that is) they feel they need to maximize the time spent on the course. I’ve had to abandon rounds here because after 4.5 hrs I’m waiting on hole 14 or 15 to tee off. Disrupts your rhythm as well.
Also their peak time green fees are exorbitant. Not worth it. Go elsewhere.
Greens immaculate condition
Greens are best I’ve seen all season. Fairways are good. Tee boxes good. Greens exceptional. Recommend getting in a round before Mother Nature has her say.
But deer population is out of control. 9th Hole trampled and rutted up bad. Bring a crossbow and have fun!
Pace of play is a HUGE problem
I played on 11/11/2023. I played 12 holes in 3 hours and 40 minutes. Started at 1:39 pm but didn’t get to finish because pace was very slow and it got dark. Don’t play after noon and expect to finish before sunset.
Back in good shape
The course is in very good shape. They still need a little more time for all the greens to be perfect, but they are still very good
GREAT Course
Conditions were fantastic. You could see that a handful of greens had recently healed but they were all in great shape when I played. Very challenging course for this mid-handicapper — the front nine was especially unforgiving to missed fairways — but I appreciated the test. I will absolutely be back!
Do not play here!!!
Played on a monday with a start time of 12PM. There were no marshalls on the back 9. The group in front of us was very slow and drove the golf carts onto the green. There was no water in the water coolers (It was 100 degrees outside). The greens are absolutely ruined and more dirt than grass. On top of all of this, you will pay >$100 to play the second most expensive golf course in Austin. The Magnolia Golf Course Management company does not care about your experience at all.
Greens are in horrible shape
Just checked times for tomorrow August 18th and they are asking $114 for green fee. I guess if they can get it good for them but the course is in really bad shape especially the greens. I would never pay $114 to play this course.
Great course…but
We teed off at 9:15 on a Sunday. Admittedly, a risky time to start. We were behind a foursome that each could give Patrick Cantlay a run (a slow one) for slowest play. After taking just under 3 hours to play the front 9, we happened upon a Marshall. I asked if he thought we could get a rain check for the back nine because we couldn’t take 6 hours to play. He asked, I paraphrase “if play was so slow, why didn’t we say something?” I thought that was his job!! Didn’t he notice the empty holes in front of the foursome ahead of us? 🤦♂️ Fortunately, we were given rain checks. The course is in good condition and very interesting. Will definitely try again, but hope the pace of play will be better.
He also said a couple of things my wife and daughter thought a little creepy, but as I didn’t hear 5em, can’t report on them.
Not a good experience
I have been wanting to play this course for a long time.. but was very disappointed in my experience.
Greens weren’t maintained properly prior, so they had new sod and sand patches (big areas) on multiple greens. The sand traps weren’t consistent either. Some were good, others were rocky or hard.
Worst part was the entire back 9, we had to wait 15-20 minutes at each tee box, due to 1 slow team 3 groups ahead of me. We had as many as 4 groups stacked up on one tee box multiple times. The marshal was aware it was happening and still did nothing to keep the pace of play at a decent flow. Not impressed at all.
I will give this course another shot in the future, in hopes that this wasn’t how it is all of the time.
