Avery Ranch Golf Club
About
Avery Ranch Golf Club is a part of the Avery Ranch residential community, 20 minutes northwest of town, that was carved and blasted out of the rocky ranchlands along Brushy Creek. This historically significant area was once home to Indians and robbers, who were drawn to this beautiful setting thick with dense oaks, meandering creeks and abundant wildlife.
The golf course was designed by former Jack Nicklaus designer Andy Raugust, who literally had to use dynamite to blast rock out of the landscape for five holes. His design features two potential signature holes on each nine.
No. 7 doglegs left, and features two scenic carries -- one off the tee and another on the approach. The hole is rather short, providing the chance to be in good position for this most spectacular approach shot on the golf course. Staring at the multi-level green, you’ll notice the huge rock wall fronting the green, the large bunker to the right, and the native cacti to the rear.
Avery Ranch Golf Club's 13th is sure to be considered one of the best par 3s in the Austin area. The 161-yard par 3 features water on the right side, impressive, towering oaks in the back, and a unique ridge of rocks to the right of the green. The reasonable distance makes it a fun challenge, and the hole features a bail out area in case of a miss

Do not play here!!!
Played on a monday with a start time of 12PM. There were no marshalls on the back 9. The group in front of us was very slow and drove the golf carts onto the green. There was no water in the water coolers (It was 100 degrees outside). The greens are absolutely ruined and more dirt than grass. On top of all of this, you will pay >$100 to play the second most expensive golf course in Austin. The Magnolia Golf Course Management company does not care about your experience at all.
Greens are in horrible shape
Just checked times for tomorrow August 18th and they are asking $114 for green fee. I guess if they can get it good for them but the course is in really bad shape especially the greens. I would never pay $114 to play this course.
Great course…but
We teed off at 9:15 on a Sunday. Admittedly, a risky time to start. We were behind a foursome that each could give Patrick Cantlay a run (a slow one) for slowest play. After taking just under 3 hours to play the front 9, we happened upon a Marshall. I asked if he thought we could get a rain check for the back nine because we couldn’t take 6 hours to play. He asked, I paraphrase “if play was so slow, why didn’t we say something?” I thought that was his job!! Didn’t he notice the empty holes in front of the foursome ahead of us? 🤦♂️ Fortunately, we were given rain checks. The course is in good condition and very interesting. Will definitely try again, but hope the pace of play will be better.
He also said a couple of things my wife and daughter thought a little creepy, but as I didn’t hear 5em, can’t report on them.
Not a good experience
I have been wanting to play this course for a long time.. but was very disappointed in my experience.
Greens weren’t maintained properly prior, so they had new sod and sand patches (big areas) on multiple greens. The sand traps weren’t consistent either. Some were good, others were rocky or hard.
Worst part was the entire back 9, we had to wait 15-20 minutes at each tee box, due to 1 slow team 3 groups ahead of me. We had as many as 4 groups stacked up on one tee box multiple times. The marshal was aware it was happening and still did nothing to keep the pace of play at a decent flow. Not impressed at all.
I will give this course another shot in the future, in hopes that this wasn’t how it is all of the time.
Horrible conditions
No one made us aware that the greens were sanded and in repair mode. Not worth the $95 per person green fee. Also, having just finished the round they closed the grill at 1pm.
BAD GREENS
The tee boxes and fairways are in great shape but maintenance forgot to take care of the greens. Majority of the greens aren't even puttable because the dead spots are SO bad. Greens are my number one priority and this was a very rough experience. I have seen Avery in 5x better shape in the past. For $42 it was do-able but I wouldn't play here for more than that.
Greens in Trouble
The greens are in bad shape. The turf was scorched and most greens are really sandy.
Nice course but terrible greens
Nice course - challenging & long. Had been highly recommended and looked forward to playing for 1st time.
It should be noted we were given a heads up by the Pro Shop when we checked in that a number of the greens were under repair due to grass dying, new sod being laid etc. Not sure we realized just how bad the greens would be however. 1-2 of the greens were in decent shape but the remaining holes were in extremely bad shape - difficult to describe just how bad and it was unfortunate as the course is well laid out & challenging but the greens were unplayable.
Disappointing
Two holes/greens under reconstruction. Condition of other greens was poor. Tee boxes were good. Fairways were great. No marshaling extremely slow players. Round took 4:45 to play. Full price was charged.
BYOG-Bring your own grass
Upon arrival with no information prior- my playing partner and I were told that there is a temp hole, damaged greens and wasn’t a range available at 930 on a Tuesday.
Classy establishment
It was 105 degrees yesterday and I overheard the beverage cart attendant was sent home due to how quiet the course is… at least send your marshal around with waters…
Won’t be back… wish I could challenge the credit card charge
Horrible greens
I understand we have to deal with this heat. And keeping the greens in good shape is a hard task. But the rate you guys are charging with the greens this bad is ridiculous. I've always had a great experience out here and that's why I came back. But this is a turn off and I'll remember it the next time I book a time. Won't be back for a while. Disappointed
Greens are awful
Of the 18 greens I would say 3 are horrendous. and another 5 of issues on the fringes and the rest or ok. The three bad ones are just dirt and fertilizer grannuals on the dirt or patches of really thin grass and dirt so the ball bounces all over the place between the green patches and the dirt so nothing rolls smooth or remotely pure and true on these 3 terrible greens. As we were checking in there where guys asking for a refund and the csr they were talking to said no but nicely. So I would pass on Avery for at least a month or two so than can sort out there greens issues.
Don’t waste your money
I’ve played this course dozens of times over the years and have never seen it like this.
The greens are a joke. We paid $50 at 4:30 to play which is ridiculous for the course conditions. They charge $114 until 2, which is a scam. The pace of play is terrible.
Don’t waste your time out money playing at Avery Ranch.
Avery Ranch
Greens and tee boxes were in horrible shape. Two of the front nine par 3’s were temporary and every other green had plenty of GUR. Should not have charged full price. Also never saw a drink cart and it was 100 F.
Staff was friendly and amenities were pretty good.
Do Not Waste Your Money
Let me start by saying this course used to be amazing! I was a member here for 5 years before moving to Tennessee a few years ago. I was in town visiting family and we went out and played and I was saddened to see how bad of shape the course is in. They have all but lost the greens, they are unplayable so plan on playing the old automatic 2 putt rule. The tee box’s that get played, the blue and white are ridiculous and mostly dirt. There is no way this course is a $100 course anymore, back in the day yes but not worth $50 with the conditions it’s in now unfortunately.
Super crowded but nice
Monday was a holiday and the greens are pretty bad for the course but it is 100+ everyday so I think they are doing great job considering. Pace of play was rough though.
Subpar for the price
Greens, tee boxes and bunkers all pretty much under repair or need serious work. Not reflected in what they charge.
Unplayable greens
I’ve played here a lot and this is the worst condition I’ve seen the greens. Definitely not worth their current price!
Greens in really rough shape for the price. Sand everywhere
