Avery Ranch Golf Club
About
Avery Ranch Golf Club is a part of the Avery Ranch residential community, 20 minutes northwest of town, that was carved and blasted out of the rocky ranchlands along Brushy Creek. This historically significant area was once home to Indians and robbers, who were drawn to this beautiful setting thick with dense oaks, meandering creeks and abundant wildlife.
The golf course was designed by former Jack Nicklaus designer Andy Raugust, who literally had to use dynamite to blast rock out of the landscape for five holes. His design features two potential signature holes on each nine.
No. 7 doglegs left, and features two scenic carries -- one off the tee and another on the approach. The hole is rather short, providing the chance to be in good position for this most spectacular approach shot on the golf course. Staring at the multi-level green, you’ll notice the huge rock wall fronting the green, the large bunker to the right, and the native cacti to the rear.
Avery Ranch Golf Club's 13th is sure to be considered one of the best par 3s in the Austin area. The 161-yard par 3 features water on the right side, impressive, towering oaks in the back, and a unique ridge of rocks to the right of the green. The reasonable distance makes it a fun challenge, and the hole features a bail out area in case of a miss

Significantly declined since last year
Course conditions are horrendous for the greens fee - $117 for dry and sandy greens, bunkers with little sand, tee boxes are fully dirt. It was appalling to see how much the course has declined since last season. Marshalls were not friendly and there was a lot of horseplay on the course, people not wearing proper attire, really slow pace. Would not recommend especially at the rate.
Course Conditions Stuggling (Greens, Teeboxes)
I'll keep it simple, I read the other reviews recently and was worried but I'm not that stingy. Now, when you charge $80 for tee times and $8 for a small bucket of balls, there are expectations. These aren't met currently! The range balls are horrible, why charge almost $10 for a small bucket, serious?
Now for the worst part, the greens are in bad shape, most of the tee boxes are completely beat down and when you hit a bomb drive within wedge distance, you hit outta fluff grass that feels like hitting your ball sitting on top of pile cotton. The other reviews aren't lying, this course is certainly not worth the price and I've seen it for over $110 on the weekend, yikes! The greens are most important, no one likes putting over need for repair sections and little sand bunkers within the green :(
Now on the flip side, if they improve the greens and tee boxes, this is a great, challenging course with a ravines everywhere. Course knowledge is needed to shoot well. Pace of play was 4:15 for 9 am which is great for this course.
Small side comment - I arrived at the starter 10 minutes prior to my tee time (9:00 am), signed for my cart and made a joke that "it looks like we're already running a bit behind". There was a group that just took off with one waiting on the tee box at this time. The starter smirked saying, it's on time don't worry, and I said I'd like to see that. Joking turned a bit serious and he said fine, I'll bet you $1 a minute, I jokingly agreed. I go practice putt only to find a free drink ticket on my golf cart when I came back, we teed off 6 minutes late ;)
Good Course - Greens a bit bumpy
Overall, great course, great layout, friendly staff, pace of play was a bit slow. Greens were a bit rough in spots, no brown patches but was not smooth. I shouldn't complain, I play in hot, dry Texas summers every year when courses struggle to keep greens green.
Needs TLC
Course layout is great but they haven’t been maintaining the greens and tee boxes enough for the prices they are charging.
Rip Off and that’s not a Yellow Stone reference.
First off this course is a very well designed and fun course to play. However, they charge $54 for a 4:30 tee time and it’s 2 hours later I’m only on #7. They know we won’t get 18 in they shouldn’t be charging for 18.
Secondly the greens…we have had mild temps and lots of rain and the greens are sandy and bumpy and less that a $54 course deserves.
Austin golf doesn’t have the greatest of options (as a guy who just moved from DFW) and this place is a disappointment. Charge less and my expectations are lower and a bad review wouldn’t be written.
You got stones to charge what you charge
The greens were in horrendous shape. Sand traps are always full of rocks. Cart path only on dry conditions I paid for 18 holes only played 9 couldn’t stomach to play more or a 6 hour round. I love the course always have but what you are charging please
Expensive
Avery Ranch is a beautiful setting and layout, but, for $100 , even though it’s Memorial Day, was way more than it should be for the condition of the greens. My word,, the greens were awful. Aeration, overseed, sand, do whatever you need to to get them up to the quality they deserve for this excellent setting.
Avoid Gift Cards !!!!!
Terrible customer service. Tried to redeem a Magnolia golf gift card and was told that it had expired and nothing they could do. The buyer of the card was not told of an expiration date and the card did not say it on it. They could tell when it was issued and that it had not been used, but because it was more than a year old, essentially "too bad". Talked to the check in person, the general manager and the regional manager for Magnolia Golf Management (the Teravista/AveryRanch/Falconhead management company). Reached out to the owner of Magnolia. No one cared.
Very slow play, a lot of 6-somes; a lot of t-boxes under repair
Was excited to play, but thought it was too expensive for the condition it was in. Great layout.
Terrible everything except for fairways. The greens putt like a game of plinko.
A lot of bad tee boxes... Bunkers were terrible.. But the greens were the worst I've seen. 470$ for 4 ppl. 70$ your done old hotdogs n club sandwiches.. Overall, gotta be the worst golf experience in Austin.
Aerated and Sanded ...
All the greens are aerated and sanded so the front 9 greens were fast and the back 9 were even faster. So Don't expect perfect greens by a long shot. A couple have roller coasters are installed on the greens. Just incrediblly uneven ground due to the aeration and sanding going on currently. And on top of that they are charging full price on tee times.
Starting to Feel Like It's Not Worth the Money
Our group plays this course often. Unfortunately, in our most recent round, our fourth player couldn't attend. However, we were charged a full rate for that no-show player. Not cool.
Avery Ranch has always pushed the limits of daily fee values while not always providing top end conditions or pace of play. It's in a convenient location so maybe those things can change for the future??
We'll be playing somewhere else for our next round.
Scruffy
Great layout. Greens were really slow having recently been verticut. Bunkers were bad and several tee box's were closed or heavily sanded. Saw bev cart once and only one person working in restaurant. You'd think with food and drink margins they'd resource those areas more.
