Long challenging fairways
Good course! Challenging course with nice views. No water holes so less balls lost ;). Give yourself plenty of time to play 18 especially if busy day. Long course.
This course was extremely slow
The pace of play was disappointing. The marshals were riding around but did not improve the pace of play. Additionally, the GPS units were not working in the carts. I would not recommend this course to anyone.
hmmmmm
Course is awesome, staff seems friendly. But they must be in financial trouble because they over booked us. We started at 12:30 at 4pm we arrived at the 9th green. We had to quit at 16 due to darkness.
Mind you this was a holiday, and I'm giving it another shot on tuesday, we'll see.
Great course if it were cheaper
The only time I play this course is when I manage to snag a hot deal, otherwise it's too pricey. You can play on near equivalent courses in the Bay area for a half to a third of the price they charge at Crystal Springs. Having said that, Its a fun and interesting course in a picturesque setting. The greens are in great condition , the carts are fairly new. The club house and facilities are old but ok. Love that they have a ball washer on every hole. Cart paths are all cemented but its a bummer you can't take your cart to the driving range
Extremely wet conditions.....
This is ussually a great course to play but can play slow, this time was no exception...our round was 5 1/2 hours, beautiful day but had rained much the days before, course was extremely wet,you pretty much plugged the ball every pitch to the green, with some greens with stand still water and the cup full of water(which worked well to clean your ball anyway).plenty of deer all over the course which is always nice scenery, but they way overbooked the course and with the conditions it played very slow with people trying to find there ball plugged right in the fairway. All in all I still had a fun time and made the best of the occasion, things aren't always perfect and the more you dwell the worst you play.Beautiful course and when the sun comes back out for a few days in a row it will be in amazing shape then.Marshall was very helpful and constently on top of the people who were lagging.
Course in Good Condition but Horrible Speed of Play
Took over 3 hours to complete 9 holes. Course was in good shape, so if you can get out when it won't be so crowded, you'll have a nice time!
It was okay
We were paired with another couple who had very little golf expertise or experience. As a result, we were looking for balls all day and we were unable to play at our normal pace. We were also behind a scramble tournament that had fivesomes and we waited for them as well.
Decent course in nice area but slow.
Crystal Springs is old style course. Decent layout and surroundings are nice. Lots of trees. Practice facilities are just average. Average range off mats but buckets are on the higher side. Two practice putting greens with no short game area where you can chip. Green fees are reasonable and you can play for 40 bucks with cart.
The problem with this course is pace of play. Lots of walkers which is ok but since it is a hilly course expect long rounds. Also, the way the front 9 is designed, there is a lot of perpendicular slope on the fairways. So you can hit your ball on far left of fairway and it will end up in the far right of the fairway. A lot of balls are lost this way and adds to slow play.
Last two times I have played at CS, the 6th hole was clogged up. 3 groups waiting on tee and 2 other groups on the hole. Ridiculous.
scenic views, rolling hills
course was being aerated, hence the so-so course conditions; otherwise this is great course and value.
Crystal
Always play crystal springs but it seems like I book most of my round with Golfnow.
In short, best deal in town! Always!
Crystals springs golf coarse
The coarse is in great shape and it was warm ( hot ) out the cold water and refreshment cart was great Thanks very much
Visiting area. Played Pebble courses but had more fun on this course by far.
Staff was great. Course in decent shape. Loved the layout and elevation changes. Beautiful scenery. I played Spyglass and Spanish Links the days before and had way more fun playing this course
One of the best public courses in the Bay Area
Very scenic course. No real water hazards; greens are mostly flat, but narrow fairways, sloping of the fairways and trees in the "wrong place" define the challenges on this course, that is not in the "long" category.
Pace of play on Sundays is good, however I played there on a Saturday once and it was terrible (barely finished 18 holes in 5 1/2 hours).
Facilities, in particular the restrooms on the back of the Golf Shop could use some upgrades. Have not used range and don't know if they have a pitching / chipping / bunker practice area. Small putting green next to the first tee is helpful.
airerating
they told us they would start airerating 9/24. but we found out all the holes were done. there was a lot of
sand etc. Also the men were working on about four
holes on the back, which slowed play. We actually
did not play the last two greens...
Very Slow Play
The course was fun and in very goo condition. The pace was the slowest I have ever played. We had a start time of 12:37, did not get off until after 1 then it took us 3.5 hours to play the front 9. Often there was 3 groups backed up. I hink the cours is greedy and needs to just not book so many groups. 6 hour total round and we rushed at the end to get to a dinner at 7. On the positive I loved the course and would like to play it again somtime. The cost was reasonable because of GolfNow but may be overpriced if you pay the going rate,
Beautiful views
Great course for the value. Keep it in the fairway.
Waist of money = Crystal Springs
If you want to spend 8 hours on this course, this is the course for you. This is the second time a friend and I have played her with the same results and this will be our last. The staff has no idea how to turn people away making the course pace extremely slow. It took 3 1/2 hours to play 9 holes. Crystal Springs makes it extremely impossible to contact management to get any sort of refund. I do not recommend this course to anyone.
I little something for everyone, just a little
This is one of maybe three public courses in the area not in the city of San Francisco. Because of that, you are going to get all kinds of players/participants on the course, even though the layout is one the more challenging side if the spectrum.
The fairways can be tight and uneven with many elevation changes. I loved the challenge but I can see it causing serious slow play. Fortunately I think many just play the front nine as it is very scenic and the pace speeds up at hole 10. Maybe it was the grill at the turn that causes slow play because it seemed very disorganized with burger toppings not prepped. We stood there waiting as the cook diced tomatoes with a plastic knife for our burgers, that's right, diced. Without the scenic mountain views to distract you on the back nine, you can really get a feel for how bad the conditions are. The fairways were really dry and hard with many patches of just dirt and dead grass. You can also see a lot of the run down facilities which make it feel like a cheap muni course. There were a lot of areas of no rough, just hard pan which could send your ball rolling OB or into a creek. The greens rolled well but sometimes seemed over watered. I had an awesome 6 iron shot that was suppose to release off the front and trickle to the front pin, but instead plugged into the fringe. It happened to another player on a different
hole.
Bottom line: love the layout, but I'd come back when/if the grass grows back in the fairways.
No Level Lies Here But Great Views
Crystal Springs GC is a very hilly course with few level lies. The fairways are fairly hard and fast with many sloping side to side. The ball tends to roll very far (good and bad) on the fairways. The greens are in good shape and reasonably fast. The only draw back was the slow play time (5 hours). However, there are plenty of beautiful vistas to see while you wait.
Almost forgot
It'd been a while since I played Crystal Springs, and I had nearly forgotten what a pleasure it is. The course is interesting and challenging--especially if you've been playing level tracks. There are plenty of uphill, downhill, and sidehill lies, and yet plenty of good landing areas if you think a bit.
It's not just the golf, either; the setting is very pleasing on the eye and it's a given that you'll see a lot of wildlife during any round. A nice reward no matter how you're hitting 'em.
