Nice Course
Our tee time was at 8:45 am and we got paired up to make a foursome. We started off right on time. Course GPS on the cart was helpful as it was the first time I played the course. Pace was good and two different course Marshals checked with us to make sure pace was ok and even advised once of a possible delay 2 holes up..
My only gripe is the sprinklers were running on the 16th hole T-Box area. Our group had to tee off near the tips to avoid getting wet, which lengthened our course as we were playing from the whites. Other than that I enjoyed the course.
Great course, no marshals
Overall, CSGC is a great place to play, challenging layout with breathtaking views around the Crystal Springs reservoir. On the the day that i played, there was an extremely slow foursome two groups ahead of us. There were no marshals to help speed the pace of play along. On the par 5's, there would literally be 3 groups on it. I realize this can be normal for many courses, esp a popular one like CSGC, but at least make an effort to help speed up the pace of play, and nobody likes to have marshal constantly on your back, i know, we've all been there. If the marshals did say anything, i didn't see it.
Fun Challenge for High Handicappers
I enjoy playing this course with my son. He is an advanced intermediate golfer, while I am a high handicap golfer. The elevation changes and side hill lies present sufficient challenges for the advanced/intermediate golfer. Us high handicappers can have our skills put to a stiff test without losing too many golf balls.
Scenery is great. Staff friendly. Most recently played mid-afternoon on a Sun. We did have to wait on a few holes between 9-14, but was what I would consider average for municiple course on a sunny weekend day.
Fun day. Look forward to my next chance to play at Crystal Springs.
Awsome wild life
Crystal Springs is a challenging course. With the lack of rain it was in pretty good shape but as allways the wild life was awsome. Early morn is the better time to tee off. Less congestion
Good value
Course is hit or miss, depending on the state of the greens. With no rain recently, the course is playing fast. Windy conditions really increase the difficulty, which I enjoyed. Very surprised to not see it too slow or crowded on a Sunday afternoon.
Nice course -- expensive, but on Golfnow was reasonable
We played this course for $39 per person -- + an addtl $2.50 for booking, so $41.50 per person (included cart). We like this course, but it is quite expensive to play without Golfnow (tee time was 12:15). Without Golfnow, it would have been $47 per person. It is close to home, is part of the reason we like it.
Only comment we have is that we were ready to go at 12:10 (our tee time was 12:15). We went in and asked the counter person, if we could tee off since the foursome in front of us was already on the green. He said, I will call you. We waited 5 minutes with no call -- so we decided to tee off without being called. While on Hole 1, he never called us or anyone for that matter. Not efficient and actually rude!
Good, Firm Conditions.
A nice day at Crystal Springs. Pace of play was average as to be expected on a Sunday afternoon. Took about 4:45. Course was in good shape. Greens were firmer than normal. I play at Crystal for the location, it is the only decent public course on the peninsula. I think for $50 with a cart, I received what I expected. I will be back a few more times this year.
Bring your 'A' game
One of the hardest tracks I've ever played on. Don't count on many even lies and if you can't work the ball both directions, don't have a decent short game and don't like greens that roll like a pool table than you probably shouldn't come here. For the money, it's a great deal - scenic, greens well maintained and considering the drought conditions of California - pretty green everywhere. The fairways themselves were punched when I played, if the grass were a little lusher it may have helped with the end result of some of my shots. The bottom line here is your going to be faced with dog legs both directions and several greens lined with front side bunkers that leave about a 10-15 yard gap between them. Place your shot perfect off the box and your still either hitting to an elevated green or on other holes down a slope where the green rolls down and it's all lateral past it. Add in the fact that I'd say these greens roll over 10, closer to a 12 or higher and there is zero room for error. Nothing fancy about the club house or bar, but everyone was nice that worked there. The locals from San Jose I played with were very friendly and I was glad I got paired with them. The only issue I see out here is if you play on the weekend you better be prepared for a slow round. The course is difficult, add in a crowd playing somewhere with a decent price and that's going to happen. If you love the game and want a unique challenge that isn't overpriced - this is the spot. Just be prepared to wait, it's a popular place and not everyone is coming to be challenged by the course because of the views and location. I'd rather be stuck on the golf course waiting than in a car trying to get to one further away that cost more and is probably easier.
Poor management
I had a horrible experience on this course. When I told the staff at the pro shop that I have a tee time reservation at 1:37 pm, he found my reservation and asked me how much I pay, I told him I paid $21.00 plus $2.49 online fee per player . He said they can't accept this price; I told him this was a hot deal from Golf Now. Another staff came and said the green fee should be $39.00. They asked me to show them the receipt. I told them I didn't have the receipt with me but the confirmation Email showing that I paid in full online. They still insisted they couldn’t accept this low price. Luckily I had copy of the confirmation showing green fees at home. I called my wife to send that to me through WhatsApp and I showed it to them. Then they couldn't say nothing but told us to go ahead. But it delayed our tee off time so we couldn't finish 18 holes and also spoiled our day. It is so ridiculous they set this price but they don't accept it.I have booked many courses from GolfNow and never have any problems. I don't think I will play this course again.
Beautiful but mismanaged
first off, gorgeous course. Very difficult, lots of elevation and good design.
With that said, I had a one o clock tee time and didn't tee off until 1:45 because they were overbooked. I got paired with three people who never golfed and didn't understand pace of play, and it took 5 and half hours to play. Would have taken longer but it started raining and that cleared the course. For such a nice looking course, I don't see myself coming back for a long, long time
super fast greens
I've played this course about 20 times and never have the greens been so fast! I 3-putted 6 times!
Overall conditions were very good and 4 1/2 hour pace good for this course. I would not venture out on weekends there, too slow. Courteous staff.
Great walk along the peninsula
Have played Crystal Springs many times over the past 25 years. Pleased to see it is improving nicely and they are investing in the course. Although new carts are available, I encourage you to walk as many players do here. Some of it can be moderating stressing, overall it adds to your day. Incredible vista views, plenty of deer with close proximity to the highway. Was fortunate enough to be paired up with a friendly group of members and do look forward to returning again in the near future.
Crystal Springs Review
Good course. Little slow pace, but we played as a 4 some, with 2 walking.
crystal springs
course was in nice shape, particularly considering the recent rains
Never a straight putt
Winter course is wet -- grass is sparse on fairways.
Every green is sloped -- you never get a straight putt!
Price is fair, but be sure to bring your own clubs -- $50 to borrow a set makes this pricey.
Long challenging fairways
Good course! Challenging course with nice views. No water holes so less balls lost ;). Give yourself plenty of time to play 18 especially if busy day. Long course.
This course was extremely slow
The pace of play was disappointing. The marshals were riding around but did not improve the pace of play. Additionally, the GPS units were not working in the carts. I would not recommend this course to anyone.
hmmmmm
Course is awesome, staff seems friendly. But they must be in financial trouble because they over booked us. We started at 12:30 at 4pm we arrived at the 9th green. We had to quit at 16 due to darkness.
Mind you this was a holiday, and I'm giving it another shot on tuesday, we'll see.
Great course if it were cheaper
The only time I play this course is when I manage to snag a hot deal, otherwise it's too pricey. You can play on near equivalent courses in the Bay area for a half to a third of the price they charge at Crystal Springs. Having said that, Its a fun and interesting course in a picturesque setting. The greens are in great condition , the carts are fairly new. The club house and facilities are old but ok. Love that they have a ball washer on every hole. Cart paths are all cemented but its a bummer you can't take your cart to the driving range
Extremely wet conditions.....
This is ussually a great course to play but can play slow, this time was no exception...our round was 5 1/2 hours, beautiful day but had rained much the days before, course was extremely wet,you pretty much plugged the ball every pitch to the green, with some greens with stand still water and the cup full of water(which worked well to clean your ball anyway).plenty of deer all over the course which is always nice scenery, but they way overbooked the course and with the conditions it played very slow with people trying to find there ball plugged right in the fairway. All in all I still had a fun time and made the best of the occasion, things aren't always perfect and the more you dwell the worst you play.Beautiful course and when the sun comes back out for a few days in a row it will be in amazing shape then.Marshall was very helpful and constently on top of the people who were lagging.
