4 hours to play 9 holes, horrible time management by staff

We had a 1:15 tee time for 4, didn't get out until close to 2 PM. When we got to the 2nd tee, there were two groups waiting ahead of us. We finished the front nine at 5 PM and decided to call it a day.

I blame the facility for sending out 4-somes only 7 minutes apart (the previous group was 1:08 PM and the group before that was 1 PM, and the group after us was 1:22 PM) and not encouraging faster pace of play.

The course can be pretty challenging for new golfers, so for a public golf course to expect people to hit their drive and their approach shot in < 7 minutes is pretty ridiculous. They are clearly just trying to maximize their income, but at a big cost to the golfers that come here.

Shame too, since we booked our tee time 5 days in advance and we were really looking forward to it.

Challenging course, slow play

The biggest issue with the day was the golf carts. We had to call twice and have a new one delivered because the carts ran out of power. Also the pairing was uneven. We were paired with a single so there were 3 of us. There was a single in front and a foursome in front of them and a couple behind us. Made for very slow play.

Golf Carts didn't work

Showed up for the Tee-time and was told that the golf carts weren't working or that they would last as many as 3-7 holes before shutting down. Others at the course who had just finished up were visibly frustrated.
A 50% discount on the cart fee was then offered. I was surprised that there would be any cart fee for carts that are guaranteed to shut down after 3-7 holes.
Had a great round at Harding Park after the hour round trip to Crystal Springs.

Lots of wildlife and good layout

Course was in great shape considering the freezing weather in the area for the last week. Some of the traps had frozen water in them and could use some maintenance, but other parts of the course were good. Course has some narrow areas but the landing areas where most drives would land were fairly wide and made room for some errors.

Slow play, poor conditions

If it weren't the only somewhat challenging public course on the peninsula I would never go here. Conditions are poor, play is slow, and it costs too much. Greens are awful...some of the local munis have better greens. A shame they don't put some money into it and spread out the tee times because the layout is good.

Beautiful place to play in the Bay Area

I love this course for its views and challenging holes. The weather here can be unpredictable and gets cold if the iwnd and fog are in. Very scenic place though with lots of wildlife.
durring this round we had some trouble with our carts dying and slow response from the club house, otherwise I would rate this course a 5.

Slow Mo

Crystal is overall is good course, but the greens do need some attention and they need to do a better job using a marshall. We had folks in front of us who were moving very slow and the marshall drove right by them.

Near Airport (SFO) but poor course management

It is very close to SFO airport, but you should not expect too much here due to poor course management. Very often you will meet deer in the course. Fantastic experience...

Beautiful, but painfully slow and lacking amenities

Everything about this place was slow. The bartender is the slowest person I've ever seen. He took 20 minutes to make 4 bloody marys for the group in front of us, so I was unable to even purchase a beer before my tee time. There were three groups stacked up in front of us at the SECOND hole. This set the tone for the entire day. We started at 1:30, and only got to hole 16 by the time it was full dark out. There was no beverage cart service, the snack shack was closed by the time we got there (a decade later), the grass was completely dead/bare dirt around couple of steep greens, resulting in decent shots rolling off the edge of the world. If this course wasn't so pretty, it would have been a fairly miserable outing on the whole. There are spectacular views of the reservoir, lots of vertical changes, deer and rolling hills. But don't come here if you're looking to have a couple beers or finish a round in less than 6-7 hours.

Affordable, decent round of golf

I enjoyed my past two rounds at Crystal Springs. The course definitely has its challenges, primarily in uneven lies (even on some of the teeboxes, which really should be addressed by course maintenance), narrow fairways (holes 2, 5, 9 and 15), tricky pin placement (par 3 8th, tucked right behind the right greenside bunker), and significant elevation changes on some holes. Glad to have played with some "locals" the last two times out - very helpful in where to play shots. Will likely return for another round here in the future.

Must be under new management, not the best experience.

I have played Crystal Springs a number of times over the years and my latest experience will be my last for a while. GPS has been removed from the carts, both carts for our foursome failed during the round. The greens were pretty beat up, granted it is the end of summer and on a day with the temps in the 90's I saw the beverage service once.

Beautiful course, scenic

Excellent course. Very scenic with mountains, a water reserve, and fog/mist around. Hole #6 is especially beautiful. Highly recommend trying it out. Course is well maintained and challenging. Greens are tough and fairways slant so that you need to be careful where you place your ball, otherwise it will roll right into the rough. Many 400+ yard holes, so this is a good 5 hour course with traffic.

"While were young"

Challenging course with up and down lies and some narrow fairways. When we played, the bunkers were very hard, it's like hitting off dirt! Great course if you have time to waste. 5+ hrs round at normal weekend rate is just not worthwhile.

Bargain at GolfNow rates

Although Crystal is not my favorite local course, I couldn't pass up the under $40 rate with cart on GolfNow. As usual the course played a touch slow for my liking, just around 5 hours, but the place is in great shape. There were none of the hidden wet areas that I usually find on this course and overall the conditions were great along with the weather. It was a fine day to shoot a 91 for this 20 handicapped hacker.

Tough layout but fair,

good course. However bring your own food if needed. Snack shack on the 10th hole is NEVER open, cart girl doesn't have food and when she does, sandwiches are poor and expensive. After the round at 4:30, restaurant kitchen is closed!!! Course is fun to play but amenities are lacking
