About
Located just minutes from LAX, Rio Hondo Golf Club is conveniently accessible from the South Bay and Orange County. Golf Digest has ranked the course as one of southern California's "Places to Play." The 6,370-yard layout is narrow and challenging, placing a premium on accuracy off the tee. Many locals consider it to be the toughest golf course in the area. The course features tight, tree-lined fairways and subtly contoured greens that are faster than they look. It's not a particularly long layout but the par 3s provide some good length. Golfers will face a variety of challenges throughout, but there is also plenty of scenic respite. Sparkling lakes and cascading waterfalls are scattered across the landscape, coming into play on a few holes as well. In addition to the golf course, there is also a lighted, 30-station driving range at Rio Hondo G.C.

Golfer Reviews
Recently aerated
Greens a little bumpy due to recent aeration. Otherwise Fairways were good. Some tee boxes felt a little uneven but overall good condition.
Layout: narrow fairways with good mix of sand. Scattered water.
Pace of play was excellent for a Saturday morning.
Rió Hondo GC, Downey, CA
Nice local course in great conditions. Played last Friday in the heat that was lessen by gentle breeze making the round much more enjoyable.
Prepare to wait
I booked time at the course on a day when they had high school students playing. The pace was ridiculously slow. I was able to make it through the first two holes, and then noticed the backup. It was suggested to the staff that they begin to post times when high school teams will be practicing.
Nice tree lined course that made you hit the fairway or Par was not a bargain. Tee boxes were mostly good with a few of them on the thin side and a bit uneven. Fairways were well covered and had good lies all day. Greens were good
and a bit on the slow side. Overall I would play here again...
One of the areas best
I really like this course, but the two things that took away from my recent round were the lack of rangers on the course keeping the pace of play moving. And the sand traps are in need of some serious attention. Some are so hard, they're unplayable.
Split personality on the links
What can I say. This was my 8th time out after declaring my comeback after holding out because of contract disputes...... kidding... Actually the blame of the comeback comes on a 7 year layoff after back surgery. This year I said if Tiger won another major I will make a comeback. Well, there you have it. Its Tiger's fault. Never the less, here you have it. Came to play and shot +14 in the front 9. That was #$*%$. However, the back was owned by my split personality. He shot +2 on the back 9. I have no answers for this. Anyway, back to the course. Excellent condition. Better than I have ever seen it. The pace for a Sunday was superb. The greens were consistant. Fairways were good. I highly reccomend this course out of any I the southbay area (Redondo beach, hermosa beach, Manhattan beach areas). Thirteen miles to Downey isnt bad and it's worth it. I'm done here. Thanks again.
Tiiiiight and OK greens
Layout here is super tight. Fairways stacked up on each other. Greens are slow. Otherwise it was decent pace and friendly staff!
Nice Course for Average Golfer
We're average golfers who play about once or twice a month. The conditions at Rio Hondo this time were excellent for a heavily played public course. Nice grass on fairway, smooth greens (not too fast), good sand, healthy (but not too high) rough with no dirt spots. Probably not too hard for really good golfers; but for those who play from the white tees, this place is great.
Tick Tock
We got there 1 hour prior to our round and the pro shop employee stated they were already 15 minutes behind. The reason being is because they allowed several groups ahead of us to tee off with 5 in their group. GEE...I wonder why we had to wait on every tee box and why it took 5.5 hours to play 18 holes. We can play 18 holes in 3 hours on our home course in Florida.
