About
Located just minutes from LAX, Rio Hondo Golf Club is conveniently accessible from the South Bay and Orange County. Golf Digest has ranked the course as one of southern California's "Places to Play." The 6,370-yard layout is narrow and challenging, placing a premium on accuracy off the tee. Many locals consider it to be the toughest golf course in the area. The course features tight, tree-lined fairways and subtly contoured greens that are faster than they look. It's not a particularly long layout but the par 3s provide some good length. Golfers will face a variety of challenges throughout, but there is also plenty of scenic respite. Sparkling lakes and cascading waterfalls are scattered across the landscape, coming into play on a few holes as well. In addition to the golf course, there is also a lighted, 30-station driving range at Rio Hondo G.C.

Golfer Reviews
Tricky, positional course, fun but needs better conditions
Hmmmm. The greens could be better. They need to be rolled and trimmed, there are some fungal problems on a few of them that make them bumpy.
The fairway grass is so different to the rough, it’s weird to feel such firm fairways with a mixed bunch in the rough.
But the layout is fun, some tight holes make you pay attention. But the whole place is like that, where you need to play a smart positional game.
If the greens are better it’ll be so much more fun to play.
Unfortunately it lets out 5somes so the pace can be annoying.
Great Public Course
This is a very nice public facility with driving range. The course is not long but it is very challenging requiring accuracy off the tee. The greens were in excellent shape and undulating in places. The fairways were patchy in places which is why I gave a 4 instead of 5 overall rating. I teed off early and walked in course in 3 hours. Definitely a must play.
Not Bad
I've played Hondo several times and it's an enjoyable round. The layout isn't particularly challenging but it's pretty tightly put together so if you're prone to losing drives, you'll almost certainly be in someone else's fairway. The greens are a moderate pace and true for the most part. Condition is usually pretty ok - not outstanding but good enough - though my most recent round; the fairways were pretty dormant with not much for the ball to sit on. Since I've played here several times before and the conditions were much better; I'll just chalk that up to it having been pretty early in the season. And it WAS a cold winter for LA with a lot of rain.
Pace can get slow but not excruciatingly so in my experience.
Not a bad spot to play.
best golf course around L.A.
pro shop staffs are friendly and nice . Golf course conditions okay~
Hard pan on all 18 holes.
Pace was slow but not intolerably slow. Greens in pretty good shape. Fairways are uniformly hard pan. Something seems to have killed the grass. You'd think the recent rains would've revived the turf, but it definitely hasn't. In general, the course is fairly well maintained. But the death of the fairway turf is an epic failure. Presumably this will only get worse in the hot dry months to come. This course allows the dread 5 somes. It took us to 5 hours to play 18 holes.
RUDE STARTER!
The starter in the pro shop is a rude, miserable, unprofessional jerk! Unfortunately, I don't know his name he's tall with brown hair. In the past, I've witnessed him being rude to a customer, and today he was rude to me. I'm a customer who pays money to golf, eat and drink at this course, I expect gratitude and appreciation from this idiot as an employee. Fortunately, the gentleman named Keith who works in the course's restaurant, Hackers Bar and Grill is pleasant and very professional. The course along with the greens are usually in good shape.
Slowest Round I’ve Ever Played
I’ve played here a handful of times. Pace of plays is always fairly slow. Today was painfully slow. The group ahead took forever on tee boxes, fairways and greens. Not once did anyone from the course come around to check on pace. The bar cart was easily found, but couldn’t find a Marshall anywhere. Took 5hrs and 8 mins to finish. I’d go back, but I sincerely hope they send out a marshall to regulate play.
The pace of play was very very slow
5 Somes playing ahead of us it took almost 4 hours to play 9 holes.
