Great 9 holes
The course was in very good shape, the bunkers were raked the fairways were mowed and if it wasn't for a few beginners playing from the blue tees it would have been perfect.. thanks to the staff for keeping the course in great shape.
terrible!
the minute we got there I knew it was a mistake and wanted to leave
bad shape/not maintained
slow pace (5+hours)
lots of unhappy costumers
carts are old and damaged (seat were ripped)
Greens really good. Course just fine for this level of Muni.
Greens are really good!!!
But let me put this way: I’ve played a bunch of courses over the last few months to a year, and of all the Muni courses I’ve played, Whittier has the best out of them all. And I’ve played Griffith Park, Encino/Balboa, Rancho Park, Hansen Dam, Knollwood, Los Verdes, Diamond Bar, Santa Anita, Chester Washington, Simi Hills, Los Robles, Olivas Links, Skylinks, Big Rec.
Whittier’s greens are better than all of these!! About the only one that’s similar is El Dorado. If they’ve rolled it that day. LOL.
As soon as you get to Whittier and hit the practice green, immediately you feel how fast it is. A friend of my I took to play there a couple months ago was shocked at how smooth and pace-y the green was.
Given, there are a couple greens that aren’t as good, such as 12, which was actually repaired recently and so it’s still a bit thicker and lively-er, got some jaggedness to it, but everybody knows that jaggedness and slowness is like the standard everywhere else!!! What happened to the ROLLED FLAT SMOOTH greens everywhere else???? That’s how it used to be, long time players can tell you, at most of these courses I mentioned here, that was the norm, fairly quick and smooth greens!!!
Sure, not all the fairways are perfect, but at least there is grass here, unlike at places like Los Verdes, which is an absolute disaster right now. Sure a few holes are starting to show some gopher problems but it’s nowhere near the horrendous horror that you find at Wilson at Griffith Park!
The bunkers were all machine raked and perfect today, except for the lazy yahoos who went in the didn’t take them after use!!! But they were really good bunkers! For this type of Muni!!! You go to any of those other muni types and the bunkers are a disaster, you KNOW? I know you know!!!
I don’t mean to talk up Whittier too much, but at least it’s more playable and acceptable than all these other courses I mentioned!! I would be happy to play and putt on these greens than at all those other places, any time!!! I wish I lived closer LOL it’s a bit of a trek for me. I only play Whittier every 3 months or so, and it’s still in as good a shape as before!! At least you can smooth roll the putts!! Yes of course not all of them are perfect, some have crab grass growing into them but at least it still rolls!!!
So, I just don’t understand what’s happened to the greens at those other places. I wish they would get back to rolling them and slicking them out!!!
Good course to sneak out the house/work…
Fair price. Course is smooth . Hit it good you’ll be good hit it bad you’ll be bad . The grass is Maintained in play area. The greens are good but when windy the pines n debris blows onto it. I enjoy this course after work get a decent deal, local, tee times available mid days and enjoy the time being there.
Apathy all around
From the get go … the starter/clerk appears to hate his job Non friendly to any and all
Then the groupings are poorly handled There were a group of 5 and 6 back to back
So the pace was regrettable
You figured that a Thursday afternoon would be a stroll in the park Far from it And where’s a Marshall when you need one
You got stragglers poaching holes on the 18 hole from the 9 hole course to avoid paying extra
Dismal round Didn’t and couldn’t finish the round
Won’t be coming back
