Carlton Oaks Country Club is the only public Dye Design golf course in San Diego. The course is covered with hundreds of mature trees interspersed with sparkling blue lakes and meandering creeks. The layout offers a diverse mix of holes that all possess a unique character. They all offer different challenges in the form of either water hazards of strategically placed sand traps along the fairways. Tricky pot bunkers and interesting elevation changes were also incorporated into the design as well as Dye's signature railroad ties. There are five very different sets of tees that offer a challenging round from the back tees but also enough playability to appeal to a range of skill levels. In addition to the enjoyable layout, Carlton Oaks is one San Diego's most centrally located courses, sitting just minutes from downtown and many of the city's major attractions.

Rude Staff

This course is in terrible shape with almost half the course being bare dirt. There are only two reasons to play here: the usually friendly staff and the online deals. I recently had a really bad encounter with a staffer. I parked my cart about 30 feet from a green. This was apparently too close and a staffer (not an ambassador) in a cart came rolling up. He started treating me like he had just caught me red handed taking a bulldozer to the green. He was oddly aggressive and threatening. I simply moved my cart and kept on playing, but the whole encounter was over the top and unnecessary. Considering the horrible condition of the course, the staff needs to be spending more time actually maintaining the course and less time hassling paying customers.

A Gem way past its glory days

When I played this golf course over 25 years ago, Carlton Oaks was considered one of the top venues in San Diego. Now it is a sad lonely shell of it former glory. The Layout is still there, which is what make this a challenging golf course, but it is in such overall poor shape that it does not seem fun or fair. I constantly was looking for a flat spot on the tee boxes. Always looking for a patch of grass in the fairway to move my ball onto. Greens were hard rock and did not reward great approach shots. All the oak trees look like they are dead or dying. With the exception of a couple of par 3 holes, the course is overall not very pretty (I'm being generous). It's only worth playing because the green fees are usually pretty low on golfNow. Otherwise, it's not worth the drive if you pay over $40

Not awful- priced decently.

Glad to see the tee boxes and grass looking good even after the flooding. Some of the bunkers were actually playable. I assumed they would be bad.

As long as the prices don’t creep up, and the tee times are staggered like they currently are,, I would probably come back.

Could be so much better

Haven’t played this course for 3 years , alas the condition has gone in the wrong direction. This course could be one of the best in the area if someone would spend money on it, the layout is so good, a player’s course.

A little disappointing

I was hoping that perhaps recent rains would improve the course conditions since the last time I played here. Unfortunately the course suffered a fair amount of flood damage, and many areas were muddy and unplayable. The tee boxes, fairways and greens were in pretty good shape, but everywhere else was junk. The sand traps were mostly too wet. The course needs a lot of work and more time to dry out.

Horrible Pace of Play

I played here on a weekday afternoon. The pace of play was ridiculously slow. It took over 3 hours to play the front nine. The course itself is in pretty bad shape with a lot of flood damage from the recent rains.

After heavy rains, the week before, greens and tee boxes were nice, no sand in bunkers. Fairways were poor, difficult to find a grass lie. No snackbar on Mon. Save your money.

Good Shape

With every course, I start with the greens. They were rolling well, but a tad slow for my liking…9.5 maybe.

The bunkers are a little better. Can somewhat play out of them. I understand the course is going to get a complete redesign and probably why a lots not going into the course at this time.

Overall, we play here 3 times a month, so come out and enjoy.
