About
Carlton Oaks Country Club is the only public Dye Design golf course in San Diego. The course is covered with hundreds of mature trees interspersed with sparkling blue lakes and meandering creeks. The layout offers a diverse mix of holes that all possess a unique character. They all offer different challenges in the form of either water hazards of strategically placed sand traps along the fairways. Tricky pot bunkers and interesting elevation changes were also incorporated into the design as well as Dye's signature railroad ties. There are five very different sets of tees that offer a challenging round from the back tees but also enough playability to appeal to a range of skill levels. In addition to the enjoyable layout, Carlton Oaks is one San Diego's most centrally located courses, sitting just minutes from downtown and many of the city's major attractions.

The course layout is confusing and fairways are in absolutely terrible condition.
Slow and not well kept
Pace of play was 5hours plus and condition was mediocre

One for your “don’t play” list
This course has potential, but is the second-worst conditioned course I’ve played. It has been VERY sadly neglected. Greens are not too bad, but the rest of the course is TERRIBLE! Hardly ANY grass in the fairways or rough — hard to even tell which is which. Sand traps are terrible - like hitting off a range mat. LOTS of damage from borrowing animals, lots of leaves lying around — just generally UNKEMPT and NEGLECTED. Make note that your online booking does NOT include a cart, so add another $15 to the overpricing. In its current condition, this is a $35 course — not a $65 +.
Pace of play was SLOW.! We quit after 15 holes, because we were already over four hours and looking at a 4:45+ round — absolutely ridiculous on this course.
To leave at least one positive - staff that we had contact with were friendly and welcoming.

Pace of play
It is horrible to have to wait on every hole . It is worse when you can see two open holes in front of the group in front of you.
We apologize for the pace of play issue you experienced. We always try to keep a great pace when having our golfers on the course. Temper your expectations.
The design & layout of this course is awesome. If you are expecting perfect manicured everything you won’t get it here as it is due for a tear down or something. But if you can get over yourself and play golf, excepting the challenges of the design coupled with lack of maintenance you can have a good time here. It is a very challenging course(Dye designed) and a good value. The greens are always in great shape too. If this place were maintained it would be top 5 in the county. Worth playing.

Carlton Oaks is on the don’t play list
I played this course with my nephew and his friend and was very disappointed. My first clue was the driving range no maintenance has been done in years. The range was totally bare, the golf balls and mats we're in terrible condition. And believe it or not it went downhill from there; bare fairways and tee boxes with no grass insight, no sand in the bunkers just to name a few of the issues we experienced. In my opinion this golf course has had any overall maintenance on the course for years other than cutting the greens once so ever.
The best thing about this round was the cart girl. She was extremely nice and pleasant. The staff in the restaurant were nice as well. However, do not believe any other reviews on this site or any other site about this golf course Carlton Oaks is on the don’t play list. It's truly not worth the money.

Make up you mind
This place has seen better days. I just played Fire Cliff in Palm Desert if they can keep that course green why can’t you green up Carlton Oaks? Lack of money? Water? I am not sure but if it stays like it is I won’t be back. It’s kinda of depressing playing it. It is cheap $35 to walk it on a Friday afternoon. Pace of play was 4:10 we were waiting from hole 8 on, not sure why our foursome was catching 2 twosomes ahead of us riding in carts.

Could Be A Really Great Golf Course
This was my first time playing this course and I will be returning in the future. Yes there are some dirt spots, but most public courses in California are like that. My only gripe would be that I wish the course would cut down the tee boxes a little more (there was high grass in most, so I would just find a spot with shorter grass near my teebox).

The course was a little difficult for beginners so prepare to bring extra balls!
We had a good time playing this course! The staff around were nice and we had a few good chats! I have been to better courses with less obstacles and not so challenging for people like us with less experience though! It was a learning experience and who knows …,we might be back some day :-)
