Lakewood Golf Club
About
Lakewood Golf Club is one of the South's premier golf destinations. Opened in 1961, the course has hosted the New Orleans Open 26 times over the years. Beautiful cypress and oak trees frame the golf course, providing a beautiful backdrop throughout the round. When Ron Garl renovated the course in 2009 he managed to obtain its original character while modernizing the layout with new fairways, tee boxes, and greens. Strategically placed bunkers and fairway contouring were also added. Lakewood Golf Club is owned by the New Orleans Firefighters Pension Fund and as a tribute to New Orleans Firefighters, the final hole was redesigned and renamed "Fire in the Hole." Called so because the traps are arranged in a set of flames against a backdrop of red sand. You won't find anything like the bunkering on this par 4.

Flat, Fun Course - Quick Greens
This was my first time playing Lakewood New Orleans. When I drove up, I thought the place was going to be terrible as everything looked pretty shaggy and rough while driving to the course. However, I was VERY PLEASANTLY surprised.
The course was fun and fair. It was challenging knowing where the holes go as this was my first time playing the course. Many of the tee shots are curved or blind as to the where the green was located. It is a great to play with someone who has played before to show you where the hole is located and to where to hit your tee shots.
The club house is not too much to write home about, but I don't play for golf for an extravagant club house. I play golf for a nice, fun, challenging course which Lakewood is in abundance.
I will definitely be back to play again. The greens were quick and ran true. There is no elevation changes at all on the course so the ball rolls a long way both on the fairways as well as the greens.
OK value.
There was a tournament ahead of us (2some) that postpaid our tee time. This was OK and explained by the staff.
The pro shop isn't much. Food was adequate.
The course was coming back for the spring. Greens were consistent and fairways were decent.
The layout required using the map to navigate but useful.
Great greens and beautiful tree carvings of wildlife!
Beautiful lay out with several challenging holes! Greens were perfect and fast!
Great day
It had been about 2 months since I have played and it was great. The weather was beautiful but Wendy. The course was in great shape and the greens were fast. My buddy and I had a great time and thought the price for the round was fair. Over all, I would recommend this course to anyone.
Finally dryu
Course finally dry
Greens great shape.fajrways were soft on some holes but great enjoying to be playing again. Appreciate your efforts to maintain course.
Wet baby, wet
I like playing this course, but today was very wet from so much rain 2 days ago Was cart path only. Just one of those days where its carry only on ball flight with no rollout. Soggy & mushy just to get to your ball. Just kind of took the competitive edge off of your game.
Very Nice
Very soggy fairways very well maintained just too much rain of late
Greens were challenging and fast
Great course
Been checking out a lot of courses in the area and this is definitely one of my favorites.
Been in rainy season and the course was pretty muddy but not as bad as any other course in the area.
I am absolutely going back to this course and wouldn’t mind going there frequently.
It’s also a former PGA course.
Had a great time
Staff and services were terrific. Everyone was friendly and accommodating. Fairways and greens were all in great shape. Drinking water at every hole was an excellent accommodation considering the heat here in New Orleans. Greens were very consistemt regarding speed. I will play this course more often. Keep up the good work; all the little extra effort is appreciated. Thank you.
This is one of my favorite courses to play. Challenging layout, great condition and greens roll true. Only draw back is to be prepared for a 4.5 - 5 hour round, always seems to be jam packed with people.
Overrated; Overpriced for non-locals
I led a buddies trip to NO in late March and we played 4 local courses. This was the only one that did not meet expectations.
For $40-60 that locals pay, it would have been fine. For $110, it was an awful value.
Aside from the one island green par 3, the layout was just OK. Not bad, but also not very memorable. The impact of the unique bunkers is, in my opinion, overstated.
Clubhouse and other facilities are adequate, but significantly less impressive than the top public play courses in the area.
Conditioning was the worst we saw on our trip, mostly due to the greens, which our group referred to as "painted mud".
I would not recommend this course to anyone from out of town paying anything close to the full rate for non-locals. It's not a bad course, but it's also not a destination course.
Love the Character
Lakewood is probably my favorite course to play in the city. I'm not going to say its the nicest, but it does have a lot of character. From the cypress tree art statues, to the variety of landscape settings, and the crazy bunker shapes. It also feels nostalgic in a way; knowing all of the legends that have stepped foot on the grounds there. If I had to critique something it would be that the greens do have a few bumpy spots on each hole, and the fairways have several weeds that could be sprayed...
One of New Orleans' Finest
If you visit New Orleans and you have time to play only one full round of golf, Lakewood is probably your best bet for a place to play. The course always seems to be in good shape and the greens are as true as any in the region. It's a course that offers scoring opportunities and doesn't beat you up, but can punish you if you aren't careful. The course is the former site of the New Orleans PGA Tour stop, in it's earlier incarnation. The course was revamped in 2009 by Ron Garl. The entire course was remade, but Garl left some of the holes as they were from the original course, so if you played there prior to the makeover, you might remember the general flow of holes 1-4 and 11-15, which remain virtually the same in routing if not in look as some of the old course holes.
On my most recent visit, I was not surprised to find the course equally as pleasant as ever. I was rained out of another recent round there, but only because the rain never stopped. One of the other things that makes Lakewood a great place to play is that it drains better than any other local course. That is definitely a plus in the south Louisiana summer!
Had a great time.
This was my first time playing lakewood. For starters as soon as i pulled in the parking lot a guy pulled up in my cart grabbed my bags and told me to have a great day. That was impressive. Not too difficult of a course, the greens were very fast and very challenging. For the exception of lots of spike marks and people not fixing there ball marks, dont understand why people dont do that, they were very true. Faiways were in great shape and the range is 2nd to none. I will be playing lakewood again. In a time where customer service is horrible everywhere lakewood steps up to the plate in a big way. Thank you to the staff for a great day.
Good challenge !!!
Fun and challenging course. When dry, it's fast. Definitely worth the the time. Cool extras with the carvings of old cypress trees and flamed sand traps .
