San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

STH is a good round

The back 9 is very fun. Go up the hills and back down. Lots of Saguaros and only several trees.

Nice course, but poor delay communications

There was an hour long delay due to frost. However the course did not communicate the delay until we arrived for our 1:46 PM tee time. We finally teed off at 2:30 and was only able to play 9 holes (we were charged for 9 holes). Love the course but disappointing in the communication.

Restaurant was closed

After the round we wanted to eat supper but it was closed. All we could get was some fast food. You guys have good food and it was closed. Very disappointed in that.

Pace of play

Course was great but pace was a bit slow especially on the second nine. A marshal would have been helpful.

The Highlands

Course was in decent condition. Some areas we extremely wet with a lot of goose droppings all around the greens. I would rate the course good but overpriced at $89.00 + tax. $98.68.

Too much delay

The tee time delayed more than one hour and the pace of play was too slow.

They did not any announcement when I make a reservation and no price down either.

We could not finish the round and got a rain check for back 9.

But they did not add the tax for rain check so we lost mire than $20.

I hope they reduce the amount of tax I paid when I use the rain check.

For the money it’s average

Golf is out of control in the winter, in Arizona, for the money. Personal opinion. We need more city courses that are reasonable. Sorry San Tan Hoghlands, your a nice city course that should not charge so much. Take it for what it’s worth, starters and cart guys are awesome, front counter staff aren’t that friendly I have noticed. Rate of play is good.

getting better

Played San Tan Highlands for the third time and I continue to be impressed. The pace of play was great. Much better than it used to be. The bunkers have a good amount of sand and the greens are in very good shape. I don't think there are as many rounds being played now as compared to past years resulting in the improved pace of play. Check it out if you have not had the chance to play there yet. You will not be disappointed.

Were are the ball washers

I have played STH many times and live in the nearby subdivision. I have also had friends visit me and play the course. Most like the course but the question is very common< Were are the ball washers. Most courses have ball washers throughout the course but STH has none. This can be a problem for serious golfers and something that could be fixed easily.

Surprisingly Disappointing

I’ve played here countless times over the years and I have to say I was shocked at how bad the rough and practice facility was today. While the fairways and greens were good for peak season, the lack of attention to detail with the rough was frustrating to say the least. Uneven dried out grass mixed with dirt patches is what you will find if you miss the fairway and for over $100 it was not what I thought it would be. Additionally, the practice facility had us warming up in tall/wet grass which made it impossible to hit any type of wood or driver. Mud balls!
