San Tan Highlands

About
San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

Greens had more sand than bunkers!
Usually really like the course, but no mention of all fairways being under construction or mention of greens being covered in sand! I understand it’s summer and course repairs happen, but cant charge like course is in good conditions for a course under major maintenance.
Could only play the Front Nine. Back Nine is why I like this course. The course Ranger was indifferent this time. Young kid seemed more interested in his phone than providing any communication. We ended up starting on our own because he was nowhere to be found. Oh well. We played.
Pretty much as remembered
The whites are still to long for this aging golfer but I enjoy the layout. Some drying out with the heat but pretty decent condition. Numerous tees on the Highlands are closed for releveling, this is a plus. Wasn't very busy at 10:30 am on a Tuesday. Notice some new sod on a couple of holes.
Had a great time
Had a wonderful round. Only issue is some of the tee boxes were not available. But I understand that maintenance has to be done.
Enjoyed
Nice course & interesting layout.
Staff is very friendly
Unfortunately the turn was not well managed and after a nice hour & 50 minute front nine, there was a 25 minute wait on Ten which led to the back nine taking over two and half hours.
Overall
Fairways were stressed. Greens rolled well, however, very slow. Pace of play, well, 5 hours. Staff before and after round were nice. Lady at the bar was nice as well.
Course is slowly becoming the worst in the valley.
This course is quickly going downhill and becoming a terrible experience. The first issue didn’t even really occur to me until I thought back about all of the garbage that went on today, they don’t call your teetimes anymore to tell you when to go to the tea box, you’re dependent on some kid with an iPad that’s not even paying attention. We were late to tee off because he just sat there, staring at his phone instead of doing his job. Second issue of the day, before some in front of us was painfully slow. It took us five hours to play a four hour round, the Rangers refused to do their job even though the group ahead of us was two holes behind the group in front of them. Third problem, the carts just decided to go into “ you’re in a forbidden area” mode and wouldn’t move, even though we were in the middle of the fairway. Called the clubhouse, they said we have to back out of the area you’re not supposed to be in. Again, middle of the fairway. This used to be a pretty cool course, something is clearly changed because it’s run by idiots.
