San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

Fun and serene

Count this course as one of my favorites here in the local area. Tee boxes were clean and green, the course was great and the greens despite recent aeration are still good and will be great in a couple weeks. Tied my personal best with a 79, and had three missed birdie putts of the right edge…nonetheless, fabulous course.

Nice course needs adjustments

I had a tee time at 8:18 and the balls ran out for the range so I wasn’t able to hit any balls to warm up. According to their website they have shot tracing bays that are covered . Didn’t see any of that at all. They didn’t have any ball washers at the tee boxes or the carts. Besides those things, the course was nice to play. I like the elevation changes in the mountains.

Notice would have been nice

Back 9 was closed so we had to play the front 9 twice. They had ripped the fairways and punched/sanded the greens on top of that. Pro shop told us to play the whole course as ground under repair. This was not disclosed to us prior to arriving at the course and no discount was made available because of it. Many courses around that are $10-15 more per round but in perfect conditions. Course was close to unplayable due to this and made for a crap first impression. Would not recommend due to no notice of the conditions.

Poor conditions and communication

The greens had been aerated with tons of sand on, and the fairways have been sliced. We also make the turn and while on #10 the staff comes out to inform us the back nine is closed. None of these items were communicated while booking or checking in for our round. I will not be back soon.

Hello,

Sorry you did not enjoy your round at San Tan Highlands. In the future please give us a quick explanation so we can improve. If it is because of the current course maintenance. We had sent emails out and informed Golf Now but some golfers still did not get notified.

Thank you.

Bunkers were not good

Enjoyed playing the course but not likely to return until they get sand in the bunkers. They were extremely hard.

Rare Elevated Course

In a valley of flat desert courses San Tan stand above the rest, literally. Really cool back nine with lots of elevation change.

Not Enough Water

We played golf in the afternoon and while it was understandable to not have a beverage cart out on the course due to not very many people out on the course, it was inexcuseable to not have self serve water stations out on the course. They need to fix this issue quickly due to the summer heat.
