San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

Great course

San Tan Highlands Golf Course is in excellent condition, with well-kept fairways, consistent greens, and overall attention to detail that really shows. Pace of play was fair. Only concern was the cart not being able to enter into HC mode, You have to back out of any “close” areas.

Reservations are through a call center.

Don't like the fact you cannot call and talk to someone in the club house. They use a call center in India for reservations. The call center claimed there was no tee time available when Golf Now clearly showed one. I had to book through Golf Now instead.

Great scenery

Awesome back 9 and a great layout on all 18 definitely recommend a round or two here, only downfall was being stuck behind two foursomes and having to wait it just kinda throws of the momentum but other than that great course

Jerks on course

We had heard the locals were jerks. Our foursome was on pace at the turn and stopped for very quick relief as the bathrooms on 4 or 5 were not accessible.. But hey we were enjoying our friends and learning the greens. Still on pace at the 10th hole - 3 some behind us called the shop. The shop sent a message via the cart screen that we were on pace and were aware of the agitation. We offered the 3some to play through as there was plenty of space behind them. Grumpy old man made very nasty comments, followed by what a great golfer he was. Actually you are a jerk. We came for fun and followed the rules. We requested and were granted a refund. Not likely to return.

Oct 2025

Just reseeded so slow greens and cart-path only

Extended playing times and keep in mind GPS controlled carts so be ready to stay on the path or be stopped and have to slowly reverse out which includes the parking lot

Poorly managed course

They have a 3rd party answering service which is terrible and it’s a min 5 hour round with certain holes that have 3 group back ups. Avoid at all cost

Won't go back

Hadn't played here in a few years so thought I'd give it a chance. There was no warning that the range and putting green was closed. Also they were running 30 mins behind. Pretty excessive for no frost warning. Course had no water on it and charging 5-7 for a bottle is pretty crazy. Just felt overall like poor communication between the clubhouse and starter etc. Course was 100% not ready to play. Greens were longer that the fairways. If it's not ready to go stay closed. Id rather wait and pay the money when it's worth. Now I definitely won't go back.

Really wanted to like this course

Golfed this course this Saturday and our Tee Time was around 11:10 and we didn’t get done with 18 holes until 5:30 which to me is just way too long. I can understand that a lot of these courses can get really busy during peak but I’ve never had one take that long. It is cart path only which was not informed that until started also no range because they had recently reseed. The course is getting is good shape and there really is some cool holes and good elevation. Right now the greens are the slowest I’ve ever played which is weird. If they could fix the pace of play I would play again.

Before booking make sure you ask if either the front or back are closed. The front nine was closed and we didn’t know that until we showed up. Pace of play was expectedly slow because of this.
