San Tan Highlands (formerly known as The Golf Club at Johnson Ranch) boasts a championship course with a front nine that winds through the Sonoran desert and a back nine that finishes at the base of the bordering San Tan Mountains. Naturally, the first half of the golf course is relatively flat and the latter half has a hilly terrain. In contrast to its categorization as a desert course, this course has grass from the tees to the greens but the cactus-filled landscape definitely implies desert. The greens are quite large and undulating and the fairways are fairly open with generous landing areas. Strategically placed sand bunkers and water hazards come into play throughout the San Tan Highlands.

Layout makes it worth the trip

Front 9- Long and relatively straight. Back 9 short, tricky and through the mountains. There isn’t a lot to choose from in the QC area but this course is my favorite.

Great course off the beaten path

This course is pretty far south but during peak season it was worth every penny of the $120 I paid. Course was in really great shape, pace of play was great. It took get a bit slow from 14 through 18 but nothing too crazy. My only knock is the turf on the par 3 hitting down but if that’s my biggest complaint this is better than 90% of courses in the valley. Will definitely be back!

Overbooked and overpriced

Frost delays most days and still more than $100 per round. Rough is hard pan. Fairways are not great.

Unbelievably slow play.

There was a frost delay (not unusual this time of year). However, when I called the given number, the answering service told me that there were no delays. It’s frustrating when I tried to do the right thing and we still had to stand around waiting because of being given inaccurate information.

Pace of play is pathetic. Waited on every hole and NO ranger ever to get players moving.

Disappointed with services

The disorganization of the course with the lack of help at the cart pickup. I eventually just had to just take a cart. I was very disappointed in this round of golf.

Tee markers and pace of play

They have 5 different tees and it’s a pain to figure out which tee box is which because they are marked with random rocks some that are painted with the right color and others that are not.

So you waste time figuring out which tee box is which and meanwhile the Marshall comes complaining about slow play.

We were right up in the group ahead of us so why are you complaining at us?

According to their own gps system we were never more than 9 mins behind. Basically half a hole. Absolutely rediculous to whine at us when we can see the group in front of us and we are having to wait on them.

Please paint your tee box markers better.
