The Pine Course at the McCormick Ranch Golf Club offers mature pines, in an appropriate contrast to its sibling golf course, the Pine Course, and is also narrower than the other golf course. What they have in common include the facts that Desmond Muirhead designed both of them and they both date back to 1972; recent renovations have also given both golf courses new greens, sand traps and bridges.

The Pine at McCormick Ranch Golf Club measures 7,187 yards, kicking off on a 398-yard par 4 that requires tee shot toward the fairway's center, leaving golfers a mid- to short-iron from the green, which slopes narrowly. Things get long by the fourth hole, one of four par-5 holes that come in at over 500 yards; this one, for example, makes you place your drive well toward right-center if you want to shoot for it in two. Close out the round of golf on the 18th hole, another long one, at 517 yards from the blue tees, and a tight hole to drive that will, thankfully, provide your last test for the day.

Signage on course terrible.

Never been here and hard to follow course. No signage except on ball washers…on back 9 sign pointed across street for next hole and when we crossed street and asked where to go we were yelled at (should have ranger there to direct golfers…staff unfriendly …seemed to be bothering them. For price course was muddy, not very challenging, and water on course (water fountains) was warm…had planned to purchase some apparel but after experience on course…did not purchase

Underwhelming

Course wasn’t in very good shape. Greens were ok though which is probably the most important part. All the sand traps were full of water, hasn’t been rain for a while so assuming over watering. Lots of very wet spots. We were golfing mid day so shouldn’t have been soaked. Staff wasn’t overly friendly. Paid the same for this course as we did for TPC Champions course. They are not even close to the same level. Ok if you don’t have high expectations.

No one at the bag drop so unloaded clubs myself and put in the club rack. Getting back to the clubs the guys says need help. Yeah those are my clubs need a car. No help beyond that with range balls, nothing. Very unfriendly and unhelpful.

The girl at the snack shack could put a smile on her face. I was charged a spectator cart fee for my wife’s cart which I understand, but I was riding with her and the GPS didn’t work.

I’ve played a few courses and the Pine course was overpriced.

Not impressed

Slow play - poor quality sand in bunkers - dirty golf carts - patchy fairways - poor condition cart paths - very noisy tournament on the adjacent Palm course. MR courses could be so much better as it is an ideal location in central Scottsdale which is a more upscale area.

Always a Challenge

I have played the McCormick Ranch courses many times over the years. I like them both but Pine has less water and is more inviting for using the driver. These courses get a lot of play but the conditions were pretty good, the greens were fast. The only real complaint is the sand bunkers, some of which are like hitting out of the Walmart parking lot. Overall, these courses are always on my list when I am in Phoenix.

LIGHTNING FAST GREENS!!!

Too expensive and the speed of the greens was ridiculous. And, the course overdid its watering. There was standing water in most of the bunkers and the very moist fairways and rough were not conducive to amateur ball-striking.

The best part of the round was playing behind a 90-year old couple that the course apparently caters to for 9 holes on a regular basis, as we were told to not to get anywhere near them because of their slow play. So, we treated them like royalty.

5 hours 20 minutes takes some of the fun away. Wondering why the course ranger couldn't help. Not very considerate golfers ahead should be pushed or told to skip a hole or two. Many others out there were bummed too.

Okay Golf

Front nine hard to tell how the holes are laid out. Even though the course was over seeded the fairway lies were bare. Way too much money for the conditions, but it’s Scottsdale winter golf.

Poorly Maintained

The tee boxes were in rough shape. Sometimes the ground was hard enough to break a tee when teeing up a ball. The fairway were better, green and properly cut and trimmed. But some areas were as much weed as grass. The bunkers were the worst, hard packed with less than an inch of sand before hitting ground so hard it was like hitting a rock. Some of the "sand" felt more like gravel. On the good side the greens were smooth, fast, and well maintained.

Average course

The course is fairly wide open and forgiving. There is a bit of water that was east to manage if you like to play safe.

The bunkers were hard packed desert sand and played like concrete, with the exception of the bunkers that had standing water.

The greens were fast with elevations and resulted in several three putts.

The fairways were generally well planted and cut low.

I played alone and finished in 4 hrs; I was Taking my time and constantly catching the group in front of me, but in no rush and enjoyed the pace.

As far as value, the same level of course in Las Vegas would be priced at around $100. My guess is that the green fees are higher being in Scottsdale. That said, for a little more $$ I would have preferred Camel Back, Shadow Mountain , Tallking Stick or the Phoenician.
