About

Holes 18

Style Desert
Par 72
Length 7221 yards
Slope 142
Rating 74.7

Grayhawk Golf Club, opened in 1994 has two 18-hole courses, Talon and Raptor, which have garnered accolades over their brief lifespan and hosted several events. Among those are tour-sanctioned events like the 2007 Fry's Electronics Open, the Andersen Consulting World Match Play Championship and the Tommy Bahama Challenge.

A round on the Grayhawk Golf Club's Raptor course, which Tom Fazio designed, delivers tests demanding golfers' respect if they're shooting high-risk for huge rewards. The par-72 course measures 7,221 yards, with natural small hills and washes. The course provides a panorama, with vistas of the McDowell Mountains, as well as indigenous Saguaro cacti and Palo Verde, Ironwood and Mesquite trees.

The fairways on the Raptor at Grayhawk Golf Club are giving, though strategic bunkers make bogeys your best bet if you don't shoot true.

Mud balls

If you like playing with mud balls during a tournament then this is the course for you. I get more mud balls in one round here than I get playing the entire winter in Seattle. I never heard "I need to play a provisional" as many times as when I play this course. I played a round of golf with two guys that each took 5 unplayable ball penalties on the same hole. When I go to the desert; I am not thinking mud balls but here I get them here. I rather play Quintero or Southern Dunes real desert golf.

Challenging But Fair

I loved the Raptor. It may have helped that I played well, but what I love is that its complex around the greens but fair. If you hit it solid, you are rewarded. On the wrong side of the hole and you are in trouble.

We played 1 up and it was fair. A mix of short and long, with most tee shots level or downhill.

I was fortunate to play a few other top end courses, and none were as complex around the greens as Raptor.

I am a huge fan and would play there again in a heartbeat, even in 100+ conditions.

Favorite courses in the valley

I love playing both courses at grayhawk. They are masterpieces when it comes to the design, the staff is always very friendly and always working to give you the best experience possible, and the courses are always in top-notch condition. Both courses have a lot to offer when it comes to difficulty and scoring. Raptor tends to be a bit harder than talon because it is longer, it is a bit more exposed to the wind, and the demand for precise shots is greater, but good shots are rewarded and birdies can be made on any hole. Many of the tough holes require some finesse to fight out the pars, while the easier holes have many options off the tee and reward creativity into and on the greens. The greens are very tricky when they are quick due to the large ridges and slopes in the greens, so knowing where to miss is key. I love going to grayhawk raptor if I want a stern test of golf, while still having fun and firing some good numbers.
