One of two Tom Fazio-designed golf courses at this Tucson resort, the Canyon Course at The Lodge at Ventana Canyon is classic desert golf, set against the backdrop of the Sonoran Desert enhanced by its surroundings of saguaros, deer, roadrunners, quail and birds. The 6,836-yard, par-72 layout rolls through the Esperro Canyon, incorporating a massive formation known as Whaleback Rock in its design. The golf course has several memorable holes, including a couple of difficult par 3s - the 13th and 16th - as well as the reachable par-5 finishing hole, which features a man-made waterfall.

Don't play here!

The course has a strange lay-out to begin with--somer holes are 1/2 milk apart and the signage is missing to lackadaisical but we had to quit after 17 holes and 41/2 hours! Waited an every single tee box from #7 to #18n when we quit due to time constraints. Called the golf shop twice and they said "they were taking care of it"--never once saw a ranger. The municipal courses have a better pace of play. Will NEVER make the mistake of playing here again!

Best Course Played in Tucson

Ventana Canyon is a confusing layout, from finding the drop bag area to navigating long routes to the range and then back again to number 1 and 10 tee boxes. It is also expensive. In spite of the above, the property is beautiful, the course outstanding and I would still rate it as the best golf experience I have had in the Tucson area.

Odd layout, tough greens, nice views

The Canyons course is bizarre. One of the most oddly routed courses I've ever played. Some of the holes are 1mile apart! Holes wind their way through neighborhoods, across a major road and through all sorts of strange configurations and routes. You will get lost! Apart from the impossible to navigate design, the course is a decent test. The greens are HUGE and very challenging to navigate without a lot of local knowledge.

In the end it was a fun day but marred by a really strange design. The other course (Mountain) is better, although it does share some of the same visual and routing challenges its not as crazy.

Overall, the conditions were great and the staff was super nice but the layout was just too odd to enjoy. This course is impossible to walk and the carts lack GPS, so as a newbie, it was real challenge.

They need GPS and better signage. Finding your way around this place is a chore.

So Fun!!

I'm an 8 handicap and golf all over the USA and this place is at the top of the must play again list! Greens were fast and smooth but would hold a ball, fairways and bunkers perfect. The views from the course are stunning, I saw a Bobcat 30 ft away. Course management is for sure the key here!

I’m going to Starr Pass

The gentleman in the pro shop was wonderful! The rest of the staff was luke warm. The set up for starting the course is laid out poorly. We had to carry our clubs down 2 flights to the pro shop and then down to get a cart. Less than happy staff greeted us. It’s high season. Add some staff!! Restrooms were less than adequate on the course. You finish at 18 and there was no restroom available. We stopped in to the resort to use the restroom and they were filthy. Give me one good reason to return here! You are one of the most expensive rounds in Tucson and delivered the least! Going back to Starr Pass.

Most scenic course

It was difficult to concentrate on golf during our first round at Ventana, because I was so distracted by the stunning views.

We played the Canyon course and look forward to returning to play the Mountain course..

Practice facility and starting area were accommodating, and easy to utilize.
