Forty-Niner Country Club
About
Situated between the Catalina and Rincon Mountains, Forty Niner Country Club runs alongside a wooded riverbed. The golf course features fairways lined with mesquites, giant cottonwoods, eucalyptus trees, and weeping willows. Desert shrubbery also lines the fairways. The course has a traditional layout that sprawls across gently rolling terrain. It's a nice walkable golf course but it's not easy. Rather than distance, this course requires accurate shot placement and careful strategy in order to maneuver the tricky doglegs and subtly elevated greens. The most difficult hole on the course comes early on. The par-4 fifth is an only seemingly narrow hole but the double-tiered green has a dramatic slope right in the center. Forty Niner Country Club finishes with a par 3 that requires a carry over water. If played smartly, it offers a great birdie opportunity.

Grass
Whenever there was grass in Fairway it was way overgrown. Especially close to greens.
Many holes were cartpath only for some unknown reason. The tee boxes and greens were actually pretty good but in between not.
Not recommended
Despite reseeding over a month ago, conditions are very poor - very long grass where I easily lost my ball in the fairway (twice) or dead grass. Carts are new but my battery was already dying (for a morning tee time). I've often had my cart die on me over the past five years. It is a course for the 90 year olds who live on the course - they can drive wherever they want (including on the greens) and play slowly (don't dare pass them). When we get to the tee box, we could hit not just the group ahead of us but the group ahead of them. It used to be a best buy in Tucson decades ago but it has failed once and I hear is having financial problems again. It is a hard mud hole of a course. Other reviewers say the same thing. My girlfriend most hates being sprayed with recycled water due to them watering throughout the day (making mushy swamps everywhere). I am done forcing friends to play here (they don't like it either). Sewailo, Starr Pass, and Arizona in the summer and city courses in the winter are the best buys in Tucson, far better buys than this course.
So-so
Was happy to get a tee time on a Saturday afternoon and the pace of play was very good because a tournament was just ending. Course conditions were not good but with all the play and the warm weather the fairways and greens showed the wear. Bunkers were a little sloppy where the grooming machine exited. Cart was brand new but still had food in it from the previous user. I think they were very busy but someone should have cleaned it.
Slow play. Rude staff. Stay away.
Starter literally missing in action. Groups added in front of us after four holes. Front nine took 3 hours. Staff had no response other than being rude. Do not play here. We quit after nine holes and will never go back.
Course is in pretty good shape. A couple of hole did not take the reseeding and there is ground under repair. Got caught behind a super slow group. the good thing was I was paired with a couple of other Veterans on Veteran's Day. Great camaraderie and conversation.
A Wonderful Day Cut Short
The course layout is excellent with a great deal of diversity between holes. The gentleman starter was welcoming and very efficient. It was my fault that I only allowed 41/2 hours for the round as I had an appointment and unfortunately after 41/2 hours we had only completed 161/2 holes. My bad as it was a beautiful day on a challenging course. The new golf electric carts are wonderful and previously I have found the 19th hole a very pleasant post golf watering hole.
Any day on the golf course is a good day.
Wet Wet Wet
Who is managing the course. Look at hole 11 the fairway is dry and it resembles the rough on most other courses.
On number one I had to have someone push the cart out of a mud hole. Every shot the ball had to be cleaned and
and replaced on the course. 49ers is not ready for prime time.
Horrible conditions
It was a muddy mess especially in the fairways. Tee boxes overgrown and a mess as well. They were running the sprinklers, despite the mud trenches on every fairway. This time of year, courses should be much better condition than this..don't waste your money.
Solid courde
Really enjoyed my round at the forty niner golf course. Really friendly staff and great layout on some of the holes. Some fairways were a bit wet or rough but terrific value for the greens fee.
Prepping for winter play
Course in early reseed and surprisingly good. Fairways are inconsistent and splotchy (some cart path only to help). Some very green, however long and you can lose a ball almost anywhere.
Greens very good, fast, smooth. Hope they remain so, the best part of course now.
New cart fleet is nice, clubhouse accommodating.
Great price for winter golf, no waiting, beautiful views, and interesting river valley setting. Can get busy, we lucked out on a Sunday with an open course. Will be returning.
Too Slow!
I love this course. It my be my favorite in the area, but today was a nightmare. The pace was okay, a bit slow on the front.
The foursome I was playing in became 3 on the back, same as 4 to 3, in front of us.
Got to 13, huge wait! I quit, only to find a three-some two holes ahead, and Two holes empty in front of them! Yikes!
Send a Marshal!
Classic 49er
Fairways are always wacky here. Sometimes hard, sometimes soft, today they were thick! Example: best drive of the day on the 16th hole, cut off a ton of fairway, and it took me a minute to locate my ball, which was sitting in pretty thick FAIRWAY grass. Just random. Catching fliers put of the fairway is frustrating.
Greens were better than usual, but as per usual they played at vastly different speeds and receptiveness. Bunkers wet. Course vibes are pure though. Love this place.
49er CC
This was the second time I played this course and the second round since the over-seeding was completed. The difference is readily apparent. The course is in wonderful shape at the moment. I would definitely play here again. The fairways are lush and green. The greens are fairly quick and are smooth. It is a great golf course that requires you to hit it straight off the tee or pay the price.
