Situated between the Catalina and Rincon Mountains, Forty Niner Country Club runs alongside a wooded riverbed. The golf course features fairways lined with mesquites, giant cottonwoods, eucalyptus trees, and weeping willows. Desert shrubbery also lines the fairways. The course has a traditional layout that sprawls across gently rolling terrain. It's a nice walkable golf course but it's not easy. Rather than distance, this course requires accurate shot placement and careful strategy in order to maneuver the tricky doglegs and subtly elevated greens. The most difficult hole on the course comes early on. The par-4 fifth is an only seemingly narrow hole but the double-tiered green has a dramatic slope right in the center. Forty Niner Country Club finishes with a par 3 that requires a carry over water. If played smartly, it offers a great birdie opportunity.

Nice layout, staff friendly.

Had frost delay so a bit late starting - understandable. Group in front very slow. 5 hour round - hard to get a rhythm going.

Worth the play

I played this course a few years back. I did not remember very much of it (that's saying something as I remember most holes on good courses even after a period of time), but I enjoyed it. For some reasons there are a few fairways that are not overseeded and they have been painted, yes *painted*. I found the greens fast and tough to play and read, a very good challenge.

Only so-so

Having lived in Tucson for many years, I've played 49er many times. On this particular day, the course was very crowded and pace was very slow.

Greens were in bad shape, with many of the greens having bare spots without grass, especially near the fringes.

City courses like Randolph and El Rio are in better shape in my opinion.

Bad conditions - don’t play right now.

I frequent this course quite often. I was quite shocked in how quickly the course condition has deteriorated. It was in great shape after the overseeding, but it seems like they haven’t done any lawn care or maintenance since then. The greens are horrible. They have no grass on them. They are bare and because of that it was like putting on ice. Most of the fairways are a weed infested mess. The rest of them were swamps. The nicest part of the course was the dormant Bermuda grass in the rough. You had a better lie there than on the chunky clovers or crabgrass mess in the fairway. The tee boxes need mowed badly and also leveled out. I will not play this course again until they make drastic improvements. Oh, charging $50 a round with these type of conditions was also adding insult to injury. Save your money and play a different course.

Great Time

Course was in very good shape except for a couple of the fairways that looked like it needed water.

Conditions terrible

Fairways are terrible and the overall maintenance is lacking. Looks like they are in financial trouble and cutting back on labour. This place was no good 4 years ago and now they are back to their old ways

Play a city course and bypass this course until they get serious about maintenance and can find some money to improve things.
