Chesapeake Golf Club
About
Chesapeake Golf Club sits tucked away in the idyllic village of Las Gaviotas, conveniently situated just 15 minutes from downtown Norfolk. Boasting some of the best greens in the Tidewater area, the club offers the amenities of a private club with the fees of a public golf course. The layout will challenge you with rolling fairways and tricky doglegs. Water hazards come into play frequently so be prepared for a few intimidating blind shots over water. Mature trees line the rolling fairways and there are also strategically placed bunkers lurking along the greensides. The manageable 6,278-yard length is approachable for beginners yet there are still holes that long hitters will enjoy. Chesapeake Golf Club is a course that will test your skills but it's not overly punishing for the high handicapper.

Improvement ongoing
The course has come a long way since the greens were destroyed by inexperienced maintenence staff last year.. This is what I was told. They sanded arerated , fertilized seeded so they are trying . Rearranged the holes .New owners I'm to told. Still has a ways to go. I like because it not as busy as others most of the time.
Neglected
Course was in horrible shape. Greens have bad spots all over them. Fairways hadn’t been cut in several days to maybe weeks. Bunkers are all hardpan. Used to play this course all the time 15 years ago and it was always in top shape. Just seems completely neglected right now.
Not worth the money
This course is not in very great shape. The greens are tremendously better than they were last year but still pretty awful. The golf carts all seem to have torn seats and the paths have awful potholes. The best part about the course was no one was playing so pace of play was great. This course could be a fun place to play but it needs a lot of love. My round was super cheap but not cheap enough. I cannot imagine paying full price. Maybe next year it will be better. My fingers are crossed.
It’s getting there
A few weeks ago the greens were in terrible shape but the crew has worked hard and they are coming into shape. Should be a good summer.
Top 3 worst courses I’ve played
That’s not an exaggeration btw. I wanna call it a beginner course but I wouldn’t even say that because it’s $40 a round and you can play courses for less in the vicinity in way better condition. Tee boxes, fairways and rough are just patchy grass. Then you get to the greens and there’s huge patches and holes. My ball didn’t roll smoothly on one putt. Just bounces at the hole which also makes for very very slow greens. Needs an insane amount of maintenance. I wouldn’t recommend this course to anyone that I know mainly because the price should be half of what it is. Don’t get me wrong $40 is cheap for golf, but like I said before you can play courses 10x better in the area for less.
Terrible Greens
The greens are in terrible shape, probably decease due to all the lumps and missing spots. Hopefully it gets better soon because this course has potentials and the only place to play in our area. The finally changed the layout as hole 1 is now next to clubhouse were hole 12 use to be but signs haven't been updated yet, very confusing if it's your first time playing. I love playing here but I won't return until someone tell me it has improved.
Steady improvement
The last time I played the course, it was absolutely horrible conditions have to give the maintenance crew a thumbs up things are starting to take place moving in the right direction. At least there is grass on the greens this time. Tee boxes were a little better as well.
They changed the position of the golf course holes to reflect different hole numbers, which is totally confusing. We were told to go off on the first hole, which was the old number one which now has a different denotation and when we got done with the old first nine and went to 10 there was six carts tying up so we didn’t get to play The rest of our 18 team. Weonly got nine holes in which is very disappointing and the scorecard do not reflect the new change even more confusing. Why would you change? The denotations of the holes is beyond me
Poorly maintained
I like the layout at Chesapeake GC. It has several challenging holes. But, the course has been very poorly maintained. The greens are in TERRIBLE shape. I hope they are able to improve the conditions of this course, it has the potential to be nice.
Awesome Course
I frequently golf here. Staff is friendly and the course is maintained well. One of my favorites in the Hampton Roads area
AVOID!!! Not worth your time or money.
Tee’d off behind 3 slow groups. Wasn’t able to play thru. Complained to the Marshall to get them to speed up the pace of play, didn’t happen and only saw him once. We were there for 5 hours and only played 14 holes before quitting.
The greens were in terrible shape. So much sand everywhere that you couldn’t putt, and had multiple chips onto the green just die immediately when it lands on the green. They also changed the layout and there’s no stopping after 9, just 7. Course is not worth the money or the time! Avoid this year!
On Death’s Door - Who Will Save Golf in Chesapeake
It’s hard to watch another golf course die in Chesapeake. Especially one located in a city with a growing population and lack of competition from other golf courses.
Over the past five years I’ve noticed a change in the style of management at this facility. The current director of operations should have his employment contract terminated. Let someone who takes pride in their work assume the responsibility and bring back this course.
Excuse after excuse is what you hear from the current director of operations. Individuals that know the real story behind those excuses also know they’re lies.
To the new owners (an Ohio, LLC group) please wake up. Come visit and play the course. We’d be happy to join you and discuss what’s going on with your investment.
From the outside looking in, it appears the current director of operations has a bonus clause in his agreement. That’s the only reason why you wouldn’t spend sustaining capital on maintenance and upkeep of the facility.
What happened to the restaurant, bar, driving range, greens, bunkers, fairways, irrigation pumps and tee boxes? Why have so many longtime members not signed back up to play here? The answer is the same, management style of the current director of operations.
If you have to choose between playing at Chesapeake Golf Club or driving 45 minutes away with tolls and tunnels, take the ride and avoid Chesapeake Golf Club.
March 1st
Yes, it was March 1 but the greens were filled with divots and holes and bumps like Mars surface
Have heard they’re just here for the money on the golf course and I can see that
Food they only had a little bit of food in the morning and by 1 o’clock they were out of food
Not enough employees to help and assist the front desk person
Just not a good experience, especially for $45 a person
Not worth it
I wish they would inform the player of the horrible greens. Definitely should’ve had a discounted rate to play here.
