Black Horse at Bayonet/Black Horse Golf Course
About
Following a $13 million renovation at this 36-hole former military facility, Black Horse Golf Course was not only dramatically improved, but now comparable to its more revered sister course, Bayonet. Black Horse has long been considered the easier of the two, but that's not exactly a given now with the improvements and lengthening by golf course architect Gene Bates. Its serrated bunkers may be a little easier to get out of than the cavernous craters on Bayonet, and the fairways are little more generous, but Black Horse makes up for it with more undulating and difficult greens. The renovation also opened up the views to Monterey Bay for both courses. Trees were trimmed, and both courses now have an overall cleaner look, especially with the latest bentgrass turf from tee to green.

Bunkers are terrible
Other than the beautiful views, the bunkers were not filled with sand, felt like I hit the ball out of cement. Hopefully that is a quick fix for next year's PGA Professional Championship. Other than that really enjoyed the layout and we are not in a drought anymore so you can water the greens to make the course easier.
It was great challenging green lay out. I loved.
Black horse greens are so difficult but very much challenging. I loved played there and glad find out new renovation course.
Bumpy golf
The course had just been aerated and was not in pristine condition as has been the case in the past when I have played here. We did receive a voucher for a free round at a later date so all was ok. If I had known the course had just been aerated I would have considered playing somewhere else. Putting was all but impossible and the tee boxes were in very bad shape.
Aerated fairways and greens!
Word of warning stay away from this golf course for the next week or two. Both greens and fairways are plugged and being aerated. There is a lot of sand on fairways and its like hitting out of soft sand on fairways- not a lot of room for error. The one huge benefit is that the course is completely empty i played on a Sunday and there were only a few people on the entire course!
Course had just been aerated so was not ingreatest condition. We're given certificate for free round of golf with cart to compensate. Overall very good experience,
Tougher than the course rating and slope
For challenging public course at GolfNow prepaid rate ($62) it was an excellent deal. Some teeboxes were in bad condition, but greens and Fairways nice. Greens are very tough... had lots of 3 putts and a four putt in the group. Slope from the whites must be based on the distance rather than bunkers, wind and tough pin placements. Would play again and will play Bayonet as well.
Awesome day
Blackhorse will test every part of your game and every club in your bag; putter especially. Greens have multiple levels with severe undulations. No water hazards to contend with, but plenty of fairway and green side bunkers. Tee boxes are nice and level, fairways were superb, sand traps were a little inconsistent (some hard and packed, others fluffy), greens rolled true and fast. Overall I will say this course is a great deal! I've paid much more to play in the area (Carmel Valley Ranch, Pacific Grove) and been less satisfied than my round at Blackhorse. It's a long, challenging course so if you're a high handicapper this may not be much of a joy to play.
Only negative comment would be the golf carts and how much Armor All they use to give the carts a shine. Ended up on my hands, my grips, and glove while I was playing. Had to toss my glove and clean my grips when the round was over.
Tough greens
Not too tough off the tee compared to Bayonet, greens are tougher.
Great course bad attitude in pro shop
My favorite 2 courses bring from PG but the man in the pro shop was very unfriendly and rude.
Veteran returns.
4 sets of tees. Don't knock yourself out by playing from the tips. Spend some time on the great views.
Good value good day
The Black Horse course is supposed to be the easier of the two. I think that this was a challenging course and low handicaps will really love it. I enjoyed the day and round. The course has some contoured greens so hitting the correct part is essential to scoring. It is also in excellent condition. Nothing unique here-just solid golf. Went out in my own for nine holes and then caught people on the back nine. Still finished in under 4 hours.
Off the course, the staff was very nice and accommodating. They just set me out with no hassle. They have a practice range, chipping area and putting greens. There is also a restaurant and pro shop with all you need.
If in Monterey, this is another good value. Golfnow has some great deals for here. Good place to spend a day.
Severely sloping greens
Bayonet and Blackhorse are great courses and clearly the best values on the Pennisula. Bayonet is the tougher driving course, Blackhorse is the (much) tougher putting course. The only drawback is that the practice putting green is nothing like the severe undulations you'll see on the greens at Blackhorse so it's difficult to prepare. Just have your wedge or approach game dialed in, as depending on the pin placements you're either on the right tier or you're looking at a difficult two-putts and three-putt bogeys all day long.
Great day at Black Horse
Great layout with incredible views of Monterey! Blue tees are a good challenge for a single digit handicap!
Green speeds
Maybe because of the rains during the winter the speed of greens were not very consistent. They were not rolled and somewhat grown out. No cart service on black horse even though it does not loop back to the club house on the turn. The restaurant closes at 3 pm and if you finish your round after that you only have chips sold at the bar.
Always great, challenging and beautiful!
Wonderful place to take guests. Very challenging design and the greens crew always has it in tip top shape. The staff is very kind and knowledgeable.
great golfing outing
Super golf course, great condition, everything was great. Can't wait to play there again.
White Tees. 4 some. 4.5 hrs Some waiting
Played 3/20.
Tee'd off at 9:40
Finished at 2:20. Had to wait quite a bit on tees, etc
Course in good condition. Able to drive off cart paths.
Greens good though a bit "fuzzy"
Considering all the rain this winter course in decent shape. I'm sure it will continue to improve through the spring and summer.
