A little dark, but black bear in a dark tree, hole # 6...appropriate for Black Bear Golf Club! Photo submitted by relivgolfers on 09/29/2013
Challenging course and reasonable proce
We recently played Black Bear Golf Club in Eustis, FL. This Links style course provided lots of challenges for every level player. The conditions were good with wide fairways, challenging bunkers and good greens of all sizes. You could spend extra time there working on your game on their practice facilities. Waiting for Top Tracer to open very soon. The Bear Den Restaurant provided a well-rounded menu with reasonable prices for what you needed during and after your round.
Greens need work
Usually great greens were evidently affected by dry heat. Hole #6 had no grass at all just some green chemical. Hopefully they will get better if there is some rain. Still a challenging course and will play again if the price is right.
Can't recommend course as it is now.
Severe issues/damage with the greens.
This is a course I have played many times over the years and have always enjoyed this course. Sad to say this was the worse condition I have ever seen the greens. Severe damage to the greens & uncut. Everything else was good as usual.
Fun Course
I mostly gave Blackbear an average rating as the greens need some help. I view this as a temporary problem as normally the course is in very good condition. Some of the sandtraps are washed out but there's a local rule where you can take a free drop in the trap no closer to the hole. In many of the traps, the rule is unneceassary. Generally tees and fairways are pretty good. I'll be back.
Fun, Excellent, Value
I played this course on a Saturday afternoon hot deal with my son. It was unpretentious and wide open, and the staff were friendly, and the range was clear. We liked the undulating hills and variety of hole types with lots of bunkers and only one water hole. The sand was soft and manageable and my only negative would be the greens as they were very slow, with one that was in terrible shape, and unplayable. Overall it was an affordable, fun, unique course with an easy pace of play only 45 minutes from Orlando.
Greens are in rough shape.
I got a great deal so I thought I would give it a try. I was really surprised that I was striping on the range and that would carry over to the course. After the first green, I realized that scoring on the greens would be impossible. They were punched several weeks ago, but I would have thought they would be in better shape.
Terrible
This course is in horrendous condition, it used to be a nice course!
Greens need help
Lay out was nice, pace of play was good... greens looked awful! At least 12 of 18 need alot of maintenance and some love.
Fantastic layout but needs facelift
My entire group lives in Melbourne, and we have played numerous courses in and around Central FL. This is our first time at Black Bear, and we were impressed with the layout, the friendliness of the staff, and the value for the cost. The only downside we noticed is the course definitely needs a facelift, especially the bunkers (with most having a great amount of washout and weeds throughout) and the greens (most of which were very bumpy). There are no water hazards on the course which was a little unusual, but the elevation changes, mature trees and foliage, and unique hole design made the course challenging and fun to play. You should definitely give this one a try!
Nicest condition
This was a nice and challenging course. Best conditions we have played in local courses in many months. Definitely will play again.
Great course
Best course we have played in months. Great condition.
Jim’s view of the bear
Normally this course is in good shape but with scarcity of rain they have lost the greens but fairways are pretty good. I would give it 2 stars as it’s not really playable due to the greens being unputtable.
Greens are a disaster
One one our favorite courses over the years, but not now.
I know it’s dry season but someone should introduce water to these courses on lake county. Greens are hairy, diseased and bumpy. Such a shame, we will be back but it won’t be for a while so they can get it together, $65+ for greens fees was highway robbery.
