Bull Run Golf Club
About
Situated in the foothills of Bull Run Mountain, Bull Run Golf Club has a beautiful woodland setting that is conveniently located just minutes from many historic Civil War sites. The course plays through mature forests and across lush, grassy meadows. There are also several ponds that come into play throughout. The expansive layout covers over 450 acres, allowing plenty of room for the native flora and fauna. The risk-reward layout has plenty of challenges for more daring hitters but it also offers wide fairways that are molded to steer the ball towards the center. The landing areas are generous but they are often framed by grassy hollows, bunkers, or mature trees. Bull Run is challenging, but playable, which is why the club is considered one of the best golf courses in the D.C. area.

Very disappointed
I play this course 10-15 times a year and take lessons with the pro.
This is the worst condition I have ever seen the course (yes we just had a week of rain, but it was tourn up). The greens where the only part of the course that warrented the $75 free.
The driving range (normally free) was closed and the staff in the pro shop didn't want to help with anything other than taking your money and sending you to the starter. Sunday morning with lots or people playing and no beverage girl/person.
I used to make all my friends drive out to play this course with me but that won't happen any time soon now.
Thank you for sharing your recent experience at Bull Run.
Last weekend provided an exceptional challenge as we experienced over six inches of rain over a four day period leaving the course saturated to the point where we were unable to cut fairways or roughs for several days. The rain also left the driving range in a state with standing water in several areas necessitating its closure.
After a hot summer that had left our fairways and roughs in rough shape we are seeing improvement in areas with good recovery in grass growth in all areas.
We expect continued recovery that will bring us back to the conditions that we and our clientele expect.
We hope to see you soon as the improvement continues.
Over watered and burned
Save your money, go elsewhere. Many fairways burnt out and they are over soaking the course. Also, third time playing and once again getting into verbal battles with other golfers. People that golf here are real jerks.... never going back.
Thank you for sharing your experience. I am sorry to hear that you had a negative experience with some fellow golfers, it is not a complaint that we hear often but we do regret that you had to endure the situation.
As for the wet fairways, we are currently making the needed repaird=s to the burned out areas from the summer heat with new seed. Unfortunately we must keep those areas very moist for the seed to take hold. The project is going well and we are seeing good improvement in the affected areas.
It is our hope that you will reconsider and play Bull run again the future as conditions continue to improve.
Fairways being reseeded; in poor shape as of 9/21/16
I played this course last year (2015) and found it enjoyable with many pluses. However, when I played yesterday I was very disappointed in the condition of the fairways. Specifically some had large patches of bare ground, ground under repair, and tall grass in the fairways--e.g. uncut for some time, I assume because of the reseeding project. Because of the reseeding many fairways were very wet. The entire course was Cart Path Only, which on this course makes playing particularly difficult due to some long walks from the cart path to the fairway. Hopefully the reseeding will go well. For now you may want to check with the course for current conditions.
Thank you for your feedback regarding your experience at Bull Run.
You are correct, as we complete our seeding project to help correct our fairway conditions the areas will be wetter than normal and well fertilized to encourage growth.
We thank you for your support and look forward to seeing you again this fall as conditions continue to improve!
Fairways are dirt
Rhis is one of my favorite courses, but the course is in horrendous shape. I'd reccomed staying away for the remainder of 2016. Hopefully it will recover for 2017
Terrible condition
apparently the weather this summer was too much for the type of grass they use. Normally a well maintained course. It's so bad I don't see it getting better until spring. Hope I'm wrong, I love this course.
Thanks for sharing your experience and the kind words regarding our normal conditions. We expect to see significant improvement in our fairways over the next few weeks with full recovery not long after. We look forward to seeing you as we recover!
Course is in BAD Shape
I agree with a lot of what previous reviewers have noted....course is in very BAD shape. Fairways are burnt and for the most part I was hitting out of dirt lies. If there was any grass it was patchy at best. Only positive I can say about the course right now is that the greens were rolling well.
I would hold off on playing this course till the conditions have gotten better.
Thank you for sharing your experience. As you mentioned, the summer has been difficult at Bull Run with our historic recent heat. Repairs to affected areas are underway and will continue into the fall. We look forward to seeing you again as we continue to bring conditions back to level that we expect at Bull Run.
Once Great, Now Bust
Bull Run used to be a great course, but this summer and poor maintenance has absolutely killed the FWs. The greens are in decent shape, but pretty much every FW could be marked "ground under repair." Save your money and visit another course until Bull Run can hopefully make a return to its prior glory.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We at Bull Run are working hard to recover from a difficult summer that has affected our fairways and green surrounds. Given that our course has cooler season bent grass as our primary fairway and green surface, summer is our most difficult time of year insofar as conditions are concerned. With our historic recent heat, his summer has been particularly difficult. Repairs to affected areas are underway and will continue into the fall. We look forward to seeing you again as we continue to bring conditions back to level that we expect at Bull Run.
Good Local Course
Pace of play was excellent - 7:24 tee time and finished in 3 1/4 hours. The club really strives for good pace of play. The fairways in a lot of spots were brown and soggy. Weeds were plenty. The greens though were in good shape. For the money and not to get tied up behind slow groups this is a good value / course.

Bad shape
Course was in terrible shape for a $90 plus rack rate course. Staff was almost belligerent that course was in such poor shape, asserting summer weather. Burnt out fairways and huge swaths of ground under repair and weeds on greens and washed out bunkers.
Could not believe I wasn't warned the bad condition of this course!
Fairways gone due to lack of water. Major repairs around majority of greens. I will not return. Course should be closed due to lack of care and until fairways grow back. Played the course many times and never seen it such need of water and care.
Thank you for sharing your experience. We at Bull Run are working hard to recover from a difficult summer that has affected our fairways and green surrounds. The issue has not been a lack of water rather given that our course has cooler season bent grass as our primary fairway and green surface, summer is our most difficult time of year when temperatures are extreme for long periods of time. needs work
I have played Bull Run many times before this round.. this is the worst condition I ever seen it..usually it is a 4 star course .. I could not recommend it right now
Dissapointing
The greens weren't scabby but there were patches off the fringe under repair and overgrown patches of crabgrass between the fairway and green making the Texas Wedge impossible at times.
If you're long, you'll love it - it's plenty long from the championship tees. The fairways are average at best. I'd wait a few months and read another review or two.
Great course
Great course! Layout is fun and challenging. Grass was a little rough, but it's kind of expected after the rough/hot summer we have had. But it was a great day and a lot of fun.
Slow play. Heat problems
5+ hours pace of play and no "player's assistant " to move things along. Course had problems with the heat, more than I was led to believe. Patchwork being done in some areas. Greens are in good shape though. Nice layout and staff friendly and helpful.
Course was in bad shape.
Course was disappointing with choppy greens, burnt out fairways, and large sections of sod removed. Green speeds were inconsistent, making putting difficult.
Course in bad condition
I usually love this course. However the fairways were in awful shape and greens not much better. Course held a lot of water from days before rain.
Great layout, course needs attention
The conditions of this course have varied over the last few years. Yesterday I was surprised by how many areas were brown or needed maintenance. Golfers need to do a better job fixing ball marks on greens, but course maintenance also has room for improvement. Overall good value at $30-40 on a weekday but I would be upset paying the $90-100 greens fees on a weekend
Fun Time
Great course, the starter gets you ready to go by giving you a great explanation of the course. Must be confident in all shot selection especially going after the pin. The greens putted great. Will play again.
Rough shape
We tee'd off at 4 and finished up at a quarter to 9 but only because we skipped 16 and 17. The pace of play was brutal and we never saw a Marshal. The grass was dead in many areas of the fairway and around the greens especially. For $30 I would say we got our money's worth but I would not pay anything more than that to play this course. I've played Bull Run many times in the past and this is by far the worst condition a that I've seen it.
Thank you for sharing your experience at Bull Run.
We are fortunate to be set in such a scenic location with the backdrop of the Bull Run Mountains.
The course conditions have improved dramatically from our summer heat damage and the lay out is as good as ever.
We hope to see you again soon!
