Bull Run Golf Club
About
Situated in the foothills of Bull Run Mountain, Bull Run Golf Club has a beautiful woodland setting that is conveniently located just minutes from many historic Civil War sites. The course plays through mature forests and across lush, grassy meadows. There are also several ponds that come into play throughout. The expansive layout covers over 450 acres, allowing plenty of room for the native flora and fauna. The risk-reward layout has plenty of challenges for more daring hitters but it also offers wide fairways that are molded to steer the ball towards the center. The landing areas are generous but they are often framed by grassy hollows, bunkers, or mature trees. Bull Run is challenging, but playable, which is why the club is considered one of the best golf courses in the D.C. area.

Great
Great course
Challenging enough for intermediate but not too difficult
Only if it was a little closer..
Fair Course, Avoid the Long Grass
Growing up in the DC area, Bull Run has always been one of my favorites. There are some very challenging holes and a handful of shorter, easy holes to even things out. Number 8 is a drivable par 4 if the wind and tee boxes are in the right spots. If you keep it in the fairway, 8 is one of the scorable holes on this course. Number 9, on the other hand, is a super long par-4 with water to carry on the tee shot and water up the right all the way to the green. I'm happy if I take a bogey on 9. The course is always in good shape and it is located out in the country so it has a peaceful feeling about it. Several holes can be penalizing if you end up in the long grass, so be careful of that. The employees are very friendly and the facilities are great for a public course.
relaxing and challenging course
One of my favorite course in N. VA. This course has wide fairway but not easy to make low score. Nice combination of long and short par 4 holes and some challenging holes across water 9th, 13th and 18th hole. Staffs and club house are nice and food is always better than average. Strongly recommended course with relaxing and challenging.
No Marshall anywhere.
No Marshall anywhere.
Pace of play seriously slow.
All things perfect !!
Great customer service, starter was organized and extremely helpful and friendly w/ good advise. Cart service very good. Most importantly, course was in great shape !!!
Gorgeous and moderately challenging course
Bull Run is a very pretty course in the rolling hills of the eastern Shenandoah Valley. Great customer service, excellent range and practice facilities and very uncrowded weekdays. I last played there on a Saturday at twilight and it was delightful.
Challenging Course!
Senior Player and found the White Tees at 6200 yds a good challenge. Greens and fairways were excellent. Recommend publication of an online yardage book.
This course needs better marshalling
This is my favorite course in the Northern VA area and being a part of Raspberry Golf has improved the course conditions. On the other hand, I was disappointed with the pace of play particularly on the back nine. The back nine took 3 hours for a total of a 5 hour round. This is unreasonable.
Very Enjoyable Course, But Subpar Conditioning
I second the comments by aussiegolfer66 regarding the conditioning. There is a significant amount of crab grass in the fringe and near the greens on many holes. I didn't notice the bare spots, but the crab grass has got to go!
Otherwise, the greens are in good shape and are somewhat quick. An enjoyable course that just needs a little TLC.
A Beautiful day of golf
I always love to play golf at Bull run because of the course condition and friendly staffs.
Perfect weather, great condition, great pace the other day!
I live in Fairfax but I love to drive out there because of the beauty of the course, condition and the pace.
I definitely recommend anyone who actually know how to play golf and appreciate the condition of the course. If you're a hacker, please play somewhere else.! Lol
Condition is rapidly deteriorating
I moved to the area in 2012 and I have played this course every summer since. I wrote a review about the place in 2013 saying how amazing the course and the condition of it was. I was stunned when I played it on 9/2/15 to see crab grass all through the rough around the greens, crab grass coming through on the greens and grass coming up through the middle of the fairway bunker on the 5th. There were also many bare spots throughout the course. I think if you're going to be charging $90 for a weekend round you need to be presenting a well conditioned golf course to people each week. I wish I had taken some pictures that I could upload with my review as it seems like I am the only one to think this course isn't in the best shape right now.
No Bang for Your Buck
I'd heard pretty good things about Bull Run and, coupled with the course's high greens fees, I expected a great experience.
Instead, I got a pretty "meh" experience.
First, the good:
--Nice clubhouse.
--Proshop staff were accomodating
--Nice green complexes - some challenging reads and mostly rolled true. However, see below...
--A few interesting holes
--Generous fairways
Now, the bad:
--On a holiday weekend, in the summer, not a single fairway bunker appeared to have been raked. In fact, many had weeds growing up in the middle of the trap.
--The "fringe" around the greens was non-existent, and/or had a lot of weeds/wild grass encroaching on them. Same for the aprons. A very uneven and unkempt look.
--The par 3s are very boring. They seem to be an afterthought to the design of the course.
--Granted the summer weather has stressed all the area courses, but I've seen plenty of nicer courses adapt much better.
All-in-all, I was disappointed by my first trip to Bull Run. I expected much better from a course of this price/reputation. Bull Run's sister course - Augustine, in Stafford VA - is in better shape, the layout is as good (if not better), and costs half as much (I paid $77 for a noon time at BR, I can get the same at Augusitine for $39).
I'll probably give this course another shot next year, but they've got some work to do until then...
Nice golf course!!!
Clean, Nice, Beautiful.
But this course is not easy for beginner.
There is driving range and you can practice before you play. I like this course.
In Keeping with RGT Reputation
Bull Run is managed by the Raspberry Golf Trail and like nearby courses under the same care (Raspberry Falls and Old Hickory) it is a very nice course with well-maintained holes, facilities, and a professional staff. You get free range balls and a decent practice area, the first hole has an intimidating forced carry over water, and there are additional holes that force you to carry water or brush off the tee--beginners beware.
For the price (not a highly discounted course), Bull Run is acceptable--neither a great value, nor a waste of money. If you are used to well-groomed courses, you won't be disappointed but after playing this course a few times, there's not a lot of memorable holes.
I recommend this course to intermediate and advanced golfers. Beginners may find it a bit frustrating.
Good condition
Course was in good condition, come to expect that from Bull Run. Fair weekday price for the course, wouldn't play on the weekends due to almost doubling the price.
Greens were in the best shape i have seen them in months!
Good course for the money
The parking lot and walk to the pro shop is very nice, sidewalks and nicely landscaped. Casual grill room. The course was in good shape, considering all the play it gets. And it gets a lot of play because of its straight forward layout. Good course, played in about 4 hours 15 minutes. I'd play it again if I ever come come back to the area
Great condition
course was in great shape, customer service was fantastic. Slow day with slow players however the ranger continuously checked in and on 16 tee he stopped by with a 2 for one pass for next round. Really unexpected and quite a great move. Bravo
Decent Course
A bit of a misty day following rain overnight, but the course was still in decent condition with nice layout. Only my second time at Bull Run, so didn't know Thursdays are range maintenance days = no warm up on the range before the round. Sort of disappointed in the staff who seemed a little preoccupied conversing with those who seemed to be "regulars" at the course. Which in itself isn't bad, but we didn't get much of a welcome or starting instructions, felt sort of brushed aside.
Great scenic course
Greens were fair and bunkers were okay. Staff was wonderful and pace of play was fast.
Bull Run
Great course - well worth the drive from Fairfax County. Great value. Free balls on the driving range, putting green, chipping are and a great pro shop.
