Bull Run Golf Club
About
Situated in the foothills of Bull Run Mountain, Bull Run Golf Club has a beautiful woodland setting that is conveniently located just minutes from many historic Civil War sites. The course plays through mature forests and across lush, grassy meadows. There are also several ponds that come into play throughout. The expansive layout covers over 450 acres, allowing plenty of room for the native flora and fauna. The risk-reward layout has plenty of challenges for more daring hitters but it also offers wide fairways that are molded to steer the ball towards the center. The landing areas are generous but they are often framed by grassy hollows, bunkers, or mature trees. Bull Run is challenging, but playable, which is why the club is considered one of the best golf courses in the D.C. area.

Fun time on course
Course is generally in good condition, but recent long hot weather spell has taken its toll. Pro shop and food staffs were friendly and courteous. Pace of play slowed at end but quick enough during most of late afternoon round.
Maintenance was poor
Given the summer high heat many of the fairways were suffering with brown grass spots. The fringes on many of the greens were loaded with crabgrass. We often had to move the ball so you were not putting though the crabgrass. The layout was nice. Many of the holes you may have seen at other courses. All in all the value for the greens fees ($47) was good. A very fair course. No blind shots. The 18 th hole from the whites was difficult. With a decent drive of 220 years you have a down hill lie to carry water for 200 yards. It is a par five so you have some option to layout with a wedge and then a hybrid over water to the green. Good luck. Do not misjudge your layout or you wind up in the weeds and water. I'd play again but in the show shoulder seasons.
Course review
Fairways ok. Greens in very good shape. Very lovely woods setting. It's not country club quality, but It is vastly improved since I last played it three or four years ago.
Meets expectations
Have played Bull Run several times through the years. Good prep work for a Sat round.Pace was 5 hours which is expected on a public track in the metro area.
Love the layout. Challenging for many levels of golf.
The course conditions were a bit wanting however. We've lacked rain lately but some spots were flat barren, reflecting months of neglect. Friendly staff and starter.
PS. BUll Run has some wicked-looking hornets the size of a human finger on several holes. Very ominous. They need to eliminate that threat.
Layout and condition of course were great
At start of round starter was very helpful. Everyone in my group had never played course before but he offered us good review of course and gave us good tips
Good experience
I'd seen mixed reviews of conditions at Bull Run. In my first ever visit I found it in very good condition relative to other public courses. Not private club standard by any stretch but quite good. Greens had been rececently cut so were quick. Tee boxes were fine. From Blues the course is quite challenging. Laid out very nicely with no side by side fairways. Drinking water at several spots (though should be closer to tees) plus drinks cart making the rounds. Groups in front of us were very slow but the ranger got them to speed up, a move that seems to be very rare these days and was greatly appreciated.
I used a golf now special--just $30 including cart and free use of range. That made it an extrely good value and I will happily return.
Beautiful piece of land and layout, needs TLC
Very playable layout with great natural views. Friendly and helpful staff with range included in price. A couple of forced and difficult carries for the inexperienced player. A few traps with nothing but raked dirt and small rocks. This was odd because most of the traps had a great soft white sand and were very nice. I gouged a dent in a 7 iron in one of the bad traps and stayed out thereafter. Avoid playing from these. Otherwise a very nice day of golf on a relatively empty course.
Great Course, Great Condition
Very much enjoyed the visit. The course is not as challenging/difficult as expected, but overall great place to play.
Excellent course
Pleasant staff, great layout and conditions. Expensive but still a good value with discount tee times.
Great course and staff
Bull run is laid out very well with nice views from the plains before bull run mountain. Looking foreward to fall golf at Bull Run golf glub in october. Staff is great and helpfull and the beverage cart was very visable the whole round. Great experience!
Conditions have deteriorated
This was my first time at Bull run in two or three years. I used to drive 40 miles because it was one of the nicer courses in the area and thought of it as one of the better courses around.
Yesterday I played at Bull Run and was amazed at the lack of quality of the greens, the fairways and conditions of tee boxes. The rough was mixed grasses and hadn't been treated in a long time. The fairways were burnt in areas and were chewed up. Some bunkers had standing water in them, while others were basically cement. Each green, I fixed at least three ball marks (could have been more but I really didn't feel like spending my Sunday working).
The pace of play was amazingly slow. We would wait ten minutes on each tee box. Never once did we see the ranger, and in 18 holes only saw the beverage cart twice. Twice we reached coolers that were empty.
Remember to book tee times through Golf Now. One member of our group did and paid $49 the others booked over the phone and it was $67, we thought we would all get the same rate. When we asked if we could, the guy at the pro shop said we could pay the higher price.
I used to really like Bull Run. I don't think you will ever see me there again and I hope you stay away.
I think the good course.
on 07:13/16 I was a good play some one. .
I was to very very happy. The golf course good
We played the join the people's good play.
next time I try ofthere to cours.
Thank you..
Love this course
The course was in great shape greens were fantastic and fairways mostly in great condition. I really like the mix of holes and the level is challenging but fair . People were very friendly and good advice. Overall a very pleasant experience
Great course for average golfers
I really like this course and have played it quite a few times in the past few years. I'm a 16 and find it challenging but fair, with a lot of variety to it. The rough was shaggy enough to make you want to stay out of it but not US Open style. The greens were a little pokey today (hence 4 instead of 5 stars) but I have not found that to be the case usually. The weather was brutally hot and humid so that might have been a contributor. The staff is very friendly without being overbearing. The practice area is very well done although I did not use it this time. I also did not put the kitchen to the test - only had a quick dog at the turn. Beverage cart showed up 4x in 18 holes which was appreciated on a hot day.
a good, moderate challenge, good condition
Overall I would say it is a cut above average in terms of the course, with very-good amenities. Nothing too challenging, and for a decent golfer, really just challenging enough to be interesting and make for a decent round.
Nice test of ability
Unfortunately it was cart path only and this really impacts your enjoyment of the course. Overall, even though it took 5+ hours, it was in great shape and I would recommend it to others!
Broke 80
I'm a 65 year old 10 handicap avid golfer. My experience at Bull Run was like going to a country club. Nice people, friendly service, helpful young guys professionally dressed, free range balls, beautiful course and facilities. The day was 90+ degrees and 100 percent humidity so I can't say I didn't break a sweat. For a course I had never played I finished with the best round of my life (76)..I liked it so much, I'm playing there again tomorrow...
Nice layout
Good course. Like a budget version of Raspberry Falls.
Course condition
The overall course was in great condition, however the greens were very slow. Probably they were trying to save the greens from the upcoming summer heat
