Bull Run Golf Club
About
Situated in the foothills of Bull Run Mountain, Bull Run Golf Club has a beautiful woodland setting that is conveniently located just minutes from many historic Civil War sites. The course plays through mature forests and across lush, grassy meadows. There are also several ponds that come into play throughout. The expansive layout covers over 450 acres, allowing plenty of room for the native flora and fauna. The risk-reward layout has plenty of challenges for more daring hitters but it also offers wide fairways that are molded to steer the ball towards the center. The landing areas are generous but they are often framed by grassy hollows, bunkers, or mature trees. Bull Run is challenging, but playable, which is why the club is considered one of the best golf courses in the D.C. area.

Very scenic. Nice design.
Chose this course at the last minute. I'm visiting from Texas. Drove out from McLean and well worth it. Very nice course for the money. The course routing is varied and interesting. Although it is early in the season and most of the trees were still mostly bare there was a lot of color from blooming vegetation.
The greens rolled very nicely and were consistent.
The downside.
As stated it is still early in the season and the fairways were rather spongy and moist. These soft fairways caused VERY deep divots in most of the fairways. On the 8th hole my ball stopped in one of these deep divots. The divot was so deep I would not have been able to get my club down to the majority of the ball. The grass had grown back to a degree and the divot was not very wide. I suppose they could sand these areas especially on holes where divots are plentiful. Most green side bunkers had white consistent sand but several fairways bunkers need new sand and a few fairway bunkers were marked ground under repair.
The 18th hole is a bit odd so try to preview the layout before teeing off.
Overall, I highly recommend this course and it was worth the drive from McLean.
The GM was handling the cart duties because the usual cart "person" did not make it in on Saturday. He was friendly and even made it a point to keep a rather slow foursome on pace ahead of our threesome.
Nice Spring Golf Day
I have waited all spring to get out. Bull Run was my first round of the year. The course was starting to grow into shape. Some patchy spots around the greens and fairway provided bad (unfair) lies. Tee boxes were nice with markers easy to find on the par 3s. Bunkers had nice, new, soft white sand. Very manageable course even though it was windy. Caught an old foursome at the end who was just enjoying the weather. Cart girl was new and was having difficulty navigating the course (she stopped and asked where to go several times), but she was nice. Overall enjoyable round at a nice course.
Improved conditions and well kept
The tee boxes are still a little rough and there are several areas that are under repair but it did not affect the round. Several of the fairway bunkers are still in winter shape and not filled with sand but the greens are in good shape and the fairways are perfect. Great staff and fantastic clubhouse and facilities New 4 person carts are cool and practice areas are in great shape
Scenic
As always this course remains in top condition with spectacular views across a rolling field. Some holes will challenge you to accomplish par and the 18th hole will make you come back to Bull Run
Bull Run
I play this course quite often and the Course is typically in excellent condition. Food at all times of day has been great. The people running the facility and the starters have always been very professional regardless of the cost I paid; and I personally have never had an issue when cost is through Golf-Now at any course. However, we do play this course less often at prime season, but will do so once to receive our Raspberry Certificate, so we can return. I recommend the course and Trail to people all the time.
Bull Run
Excellent outing. Professional staff. January Golf is great.
Overall good
This course received 4 out of 5 stars only because of the guy working in the pro shop. Would of received 5 but staff in pro shop seems to think people who use golfnow are on lower tier and was very rude.
Other than that loved the course. Was really slow, teed off 45 minutes after tee time, but greens were true and course was layes out well. All par 3's tee box's were closed, making them all 115 yards.
Some sand on greens causing inconstancy but shot an 83 so really can't complain. Wide fairways and only handful of holes had water. Would definitely play again but with a GN deal, wouldn't pay $100
Fun Course
This was my first time playing this course. Open but challenging with some water, particularly on the challenging finishing hole. Looking forward to playing it again in the Spring when the weather is nicer.
great in good weather
The course seems to have a drainage problem. A day following rain left it soaked therefore cart path only. No marshals to keep players moving - frustrating.
Great layout.
Tee boxes, fairways and greens were super. Were working on most of the traps and bunkers with new bases and sand. All ball cleaners had soapy water and good towels. Some other courses need to invest in soap and water and buy and fill their washers. What's so hard about that???? Super course all around.
Awesome Autumn Day
Great round with plenty of challenging golf! Must play!
Wish I had known about non green aeration
Needed to lift and clean due to fairways being aerated. Other than that, great conditions. Greens were pure
Good course but under repair
I've played this course quite a few times in the past and have always liked the layout. Condition has been iffy at times but pretty good under the currentt ownership. This time however they were renovating bunkers throughout the course and plugging the fairways on the front nine all the while allowing play to continue. Front nine conditions were deplorable with several fairways and a lot of the rough covered with plugs. We also had to put up with noisy trucks and equipment shuttling back and forth while we were playing (or trying to play!) and most bunkers out of play, marked as ground under repair.
I fully understand course maintenance and renovation has to take place but we were never advised of front nine conditions and told only about the bunkers. I feel a course owes it to its players to advise of adverse conditions beforehand or make some concession in green fees.
Great golf experience
Firstly, the staff here is super friendly. From the gentleman who greeted us with our cart upon arrival, to the check-in at the pro shop, to the rangers on the course, to the cart girl, everyone was super friendly and helpful. Made for a very enjoyable experience. The course itself was in awesome condition, especially for late October. The greens were fantastic and true, fairways were well maintained too. Getting to use the driving range as part of the greens fee was a nice bonus as well. Overall we had a great experience, and would certainly return.
Bull Run on a fall day
We golfed here once in the spring and thought it would be great in the fall. We weren't disappointed. The colors were beautiful and the course was in great shape. Excellent greens, albeit a little fast. Would definitely play here again.
Great Place to Tee it up..
Bull Run is always in great shape.. Pace of play always seems to be good.. Service and hospitality is great.. Awesome practice area.
Great Course
Got a deal to play the course, first time there. If the course was not so wet from rain the night before I would give it a 5 star rating. Great time would recommend.
Another golf afternoon in paradise.
We thoroughly enjoyed our round. The starter told us that 2:15 was the point to reach on the front nine. We made it around in about 1:50. It helps when there is no group ahead of you for about 4 holes. We kept up the pace on the back nine and were done in about 3.5 hours. The course was in great shape - great fairways (if you hit them) and fast greens. We will definitely come back out before it gets too cold.
