Blackhawk Golf Club
About
Blackhawk rests on the site of an old dairy farm, where the rolling terrain is suited for this links-style layout. This wide-open course features lots of water, loads of bunkers, and huge greens that are easy to three-putt if your approaches are off and you don’t have that feel for lag putting.
Each side has a punishing finishing hole. No. 9 is a monstrous par 4 that plays 464 yards. Off the tee, the narrow landing area is not conducive for the necessary booming drive, and the water causes problems in the fairway and around the green.
Hole 18 plays 430 yards, requiring a tee shot into the dogleg-right fairway that must thread two bodies of water.
The club prefers that you walk only on weekdays.
Getting there : Take I-35 north out of Austin, then exit FM 1825 east. Drive 5 miles to Hwy. 685 and turn left. Drive another 2.5 miles to Kelly Ln. and turn right.

I was expecting more
My first time playing here and I had heard some decent things about the course. Didn't start well, since there was apparently a shotgun tournament that started at 8 am and our tee time was at 9:52 am. 30 min delay, which we were not notified. Had I been, I would have booked somewhere else. Greens were in great shape, the fairways however, they need some work on and some of the bunkers are not fully developed or have been turned over so many times, it's mixing with regular dirt. The pace was slow only because of the tournament. I would consider going back but not for the price I paid. I've paid less at other courses and have been very satisfied (i.e. Plum Creek, Jimmy Clay, Roy Kizer, Riverside, etc.)
Ok condition at best
Overall the course wasnt too bad. The fairways were rough and not in great conditions. The bunkers were really bad
Almost perfect, almost.
Some of the fairways and pretty much all of the sand traps could use some work, like hitting off of concrete...also its in a residential area and not all obs are roped off. (Got scolded by an old man, who turned out to be extremely friendly.) However, greens were perfect! Staff was warm and welcoming, marshalls very friendly...I will definitely play this course again!
Great potential weak execution
I paid $42 for a course that is in $19 condition. This course has great potential but has been neglected whether do to a lack of revenue to spend on upkeep or they have a green's keeper that lacks intuition and experience. The bunkers had no sand instead were filled with mud. The greens had been punched and we were never once warned. The cart girl never made it around to us once even though we did see her driving the other way. One of our carts went dead on the 3rd hole and the friendly maintenance guy that came to replace it said, and I quote, "This will probably happen three more times today." I loved the layout of the course, I loved the location of this course, however the care for this course needs improvement before I set foot on it's soil again. I have been playing golf since age 3 and this is one of 4 sad stories of a great course gone to waste. 2 of the other 3 courses eventually went bankrupt and 1 survived. I am interested to see what happens with Blackhawk. I hope for the best.
Really nice condition
The greens were awesome. I played with a pair that work at another public golf course and they said their course was in really good shape but no where close to where Blackhawk was. The greens where moist enough to hold tall iron shots but fast enough that you had to be conscious of speed.
Went through 4 dead golf carts
They had a tournament that morning and most of the carts had not been charged. On 4 different occasions the cart I was in went dead and they had to bring me a new cart to ride in.
Pretty wide open, decent greens
Unfortunately we were paired with other players that we had to wait on the whole time. The carts batteries kept dying. The facilities were dirty and the bathroom really smelled. We ended up only playing 9 holes, which took over two hours.
Very thin fairways
The greens at Blackhawk are in great condition!!! but the fairways need alot I mean alot of attention! also there are bunkers that are half dirt and half sand? hard to tell. The pace of play was great, which was good considering we never saw a marshall all day. I really don't understand what the staff is trying to do with the course! either spend the money and use the water!! Blackhawk is a great layout it is a shame to see it in this kind of condition.
Good for practice and family golf.
The greens are in good shape, though slower than I prefer, but good for a round of family golf (we took our kids). Fairways need some attention, there are some bad spots all through the course so we played 'winter rules' or it really wouldn't have been fun at all. Price was a bit spendy for the course conditions but pro threw in some drinks and you couldn't beat the pace of play, even with 4 of us it took less than 3 1/2 hours. Of course there weren't many folks there. For $25 it would be okay, for the $45 we paid...not again.
Pricing
You get what you pay for if you go for twilight. Besides that, I wouldn't let someone pay for me to play there again.
Greens decent, but.....
Played this course on a Sunday morning and it was not at all busy. As soon as we got into the cart we began to see why. The golf cart barely made it through 9 holes. The fairways are terrible. The tee areas are barely passable. Overall not a good experience. I would recommend that you pay the extra $5-$10 and play somewhere else.
The carts don't make 18 holes
The only reason I played this course is because I was practicing for a tournament im playing there. The fairways are extremely hard like hitting on concrete. If you want a shot to hold on the green good luck also very hard greens but they do roll ok.This course needs a lot of work if they do fix it will be worth paying what they charge.I went through Three carts in the round I played. The staff did help us get carts pretty quick though . They should definitely look in to new carts.
Carts and bunkers are terrible
The greens are decent however the fairways could use some work and the bunkers are just terrible. We had to wait to get a cart which we barley got one before we started. The carts are some of the worst I have ever used. The brakes barley worked and the batteries were almost dead. During the round I noticed several carts that died and had to be towed back.
Enjoyable
Can't beat it for 30 bucks or less. Watch out on the left fringe of hole two. Big rattlesnake hole and the snake looked to be the thickness of a balled up fist.
Good layout; grass and maintenance need work
The course was well laid out, with good elevation and challenging approaches. It is a decent value for the money. Fairway grass needs work on a few holes, and make sure you start with a fully charged cart!
Very poorly maintained fairways
I got a great deal online for an afternoon tee time, so my expectations weren't that high, but the experience was an even bigger disappointment. After showing up for my pre-paid tee time, I discovered that I had to pay for a few balls to hit to warm up. It's not about the money, but most courses I play give you a small bucket of balls with your paid tee time, and I found this to be unnecessary.
The condition of the course is abysmal in every way. The fairways are littered with weeds, along with patches of dirt and gravel. I can tolerate unkept OB areas, but the middle of the fairway is inexcusable. Many of the holes feature filled-in former bunkers, and the current bunkers contain hardened dirt/mud, and in one case the rubber irrigation tubing was sticking out right in the middle of the trap. The first few holes in particular are exceptionally bad, and it put me in a foul mood for the entire round unfortunately.
To make things worse, around hole #7 my cart's battery began to die and I could barely move. Up ahead at the 7th green another golfer was stranded because his battery had died as well, and his playing partner had moved on a couple of holes ahead. This is apparently a pretty common problem at Black Hawk. I found out later that the carts (which are quite old) are long overdue for new batteries and apparently the owner(s) have little interest in doing anything to improve the course or the golfer's experience.
The staff did eventually drive another cart out for me and the other player, and they were friendly enough, but I don''t think the Marshall was as interested in regulating play as much as just enjoying the scenery, and trash cans, water buckets, and broken tee boxes were few and far between.
I hate to say it, but I don''t think I'll play here again unless I hear of new management and significant improvements.
Not worth the money
Fairways in bad condition. Carts were old and in poor shape. There was no beverage service on course. The men's room was dirty and appeared to have a leak. It looks like course has been neglected or is in financial trouble.
Fairways need attention and carts continued to run out of power. Was on my 4th cart by end of round.

Not much to say but a very bad experience!
The course was in bad shape plus the kitchen didn't have hardley anything that was on the menu. Where is the General Manager? Staff need a lesson in customer Service....
Terrible
5 times changing cart due to low battery. Poor fareway, terrible green. Please don't waste your money and time.
