Blackhawk Golf Club
About
Blackhawk rests on the site of an old dairy farm, where the rolling terrain is suited for this links-style layout. This wide-open course features lots of water, loads of bunkers, and huge greens that are easy to three-putt if your approaches are off and you don’t have that feel for lag putting.
Each side has a punishing finishing hole. No. 9 is a monstrous par 4 that plays 464 yards. Off the tee, the narrow landing area is not conducive for the necessary booming drive, and the water causes problems in the fairway and around the green.
Hole 18 plays 430 yards, requiring a tee shot into the dogleg-right fairway that must thread two bodies of water.
The club prefers that you walk only on weekdays.
Getting there : Take I-35 north out of Austin, then exit FM 1825 east. Drive 5 miles to Hwy. 685 and turn left. Drive another 2.5 miles to Kelly Ln. and turn right.

Course & Carts
The course does need a little attention but the golf carts are terrible. The breaks on the carts are hazardous.
Needs work
Not what I remember at all from the last time I played Blackhawk. The range balls were the worst I've seen, and the range itself was like hitting out of a fairway bunker. The carts were on their last leg, the kids running the pro shop had to tow multiple carts out to groups because their cart had died mid round. Fairways were spotty at best, grass was very thin and even non existent in places. The bunkers were lacking sand. The greens were not in good shape, they were also spotty and need a total redo. The grill was out of all food items except microwaved hot dogs.
I wouldn't recommend paying the $40+ to anyone. This course needs a complete renovation before I will pay to play out there again.
SAVE YOUR $$$$$
This course was a terrible waste of $40. If you are going to spend $40 on golf, go somewhere else, anywhere else. The greens are more sand than grass. The fairways have dry bald spots that look like the Sahara Desert. Its clear that parts of this course have been neglected for a long time. Nearly every golf cart on the course ran out of battery. We saw the marshall getting towed in before we even started our round. The grill had no frier so all they had to serve was hotdogs. The yardage on the score card doesn't always match up with the yardage on the signs. I was really hoping this course would be good and I tried to stay optimistic, but the hard truth is this course is sub-par. This course needs work. Save your money.
Carts are terrible!!
First time I played here our cart ran out of battery twice. I thought it was just bad luck so I gave it another shot. Turns out this happens everyday. We called the clubhouse asking them to bring us another one and they told us we were third on the waiting list. We had to wait half an hour to get one and even the new cart barely made it threw the grass and up the small hills. Everywhere you looked there was someone pushing their cart. Will not be playing here again.
Great greens
I played here last week as well, greens are rolling great. I shot my best two rounds the past two weeks here. One from the white tees (86) and one from the blue (88).
The course was tough due to the wind but, overall, fun.
The wind made the front 9 a challenge but we were able to make up on the back 9.
Ok course and value for the money
The course has an open feel and not that difficult. The greens were in good shape. The fairways had not had enough warm weather (mid March) to really green up yet. However, there were enough weeds and bare spots that I suspect that the fairways and tees are not in great shape even later in the year. I will probably go back later in the summer for an inexpensive practice round but play other courses with groups of other people.
Decent prices, challenging, and a great value overall.
Fun and challenging course for a decent price. Greens are in great condition!
Greens are in great shape.
Fairways decent shape, bunkers are in bad shape no sand in them, except for one. But overall a great course.
Great course coming into its own
They've been working on the course for about a year and it is starting to really show.
While most of the course was in relatively good condition, the sand traps were poorly maintained and hard as a rock.
While the course was generally in good condition for this time of year, the sand traps were poorly maintained. Specifically, the sand traps were hard as a rock and looked as if they had not been attended to for some time.
Great rate. Great greens. Everything else so-so.
It's hard to complain about $11 golf. I will certainly play again if I can keep getting good deals. The weather was cold and breezy so I practically had the course to myself. Greens were in great shape and putting was awesome. Overall the course needs work, especially the fairways. I actually preferred hitting from off the fairway or around some of the greens because the lie would be more advantageous for a good shot.
straighforward links style layout
Good enough course that allows for golfers of all skill levels. Generous fairways with next to no tree trouble. Greens are very grainy and unpredictable however. Very tough to make putts and I havent really seen anyone have much putting success at this course. Decent sized greens allow for easy greens in regulation. Not a lot of tricks at this course, just right in front of you which is nice when you just want a leisurely round. Pro shop is limited in stock. Concession is decent enough with an outdoor patio overlooking the 9th green, which is kind of nice since it is also covered. From the blue tees most par 4's (unless windy) are driver and short iron approach. It does tend to be windy at this course however, so that adds to the challenge. Fairways are pretty rough with some bare spots. The par 5's are not reachable by the average player in two, so just get into play off the tee. The par 3's are very challenging all but one which is a shorter downhill shot. I like this course because it is flat as well though, not a lot of undulation in the fairway or from the tee. Great little course if you are a beginner or mid-high handicap. Lower handi's will probably want more of a challenge. There is water on a few holes that will make you have a true strategy off the tee. I like that for sure though.
Hit or miss, but mostly miss.
You can never really be sure if the fairways and/or greens will be in okay condition. Generally, both need far too much attention. I'm not sure if it's the grass(es), the grounds crew, or what. The layout is okay -- nothing too crazy as it's basically a flat, links style course. There are also a few houses in danger; some of them have signs of obvious trauma. At this point, I just can't recommend driving over to play it.
Some feedback on range balls and the cart girl
Blackhawk has the WORST range balls BY FAR that I have seen in entire Austin. Half the balls are so damaged it doesn't go any distance therefore impossible to judge anything from the practice shots. $5 for a small bucket of such atrocious range balls is ridiculous. Also, when we were hitting our tee shots on hole # 2, the cart girl just kept driving her cart without stopping. I have never seen that in all the rounds of golf I have played.
Great Value
This is a great course for the money. The staff our also very helpful and friendly.
GOOD VALUE
Very low price, Good architecture, good greens. The new owners are fixing the fairways, surroundings, and fairway grass. Once is completed it will compete with more expensive courses! All Greens were in GREAT SHAPE!
Course in dire need of water, cleanup and maintenance
Played course on weekend and on first hole noticed it was in dire need of water. T-boxes were dry and hard, fairways dry, hard and ground was cracking. Greens were dry but playable. Sand bunkers were rock hard and had small rocks no sand. Even found beer cans in a couple of them. Saw Marshall twice at the #1 Tee and at the 18th green. Not a great experience, but a bad day of golf is still better than a great day at work.
course needs more watering in fairways
The fairways were a little hard and need some watreing. There were spots where water sprinkler left on too long and soaked the areas making it muddy around the greens. The greens were good and well groomed.
This course needs some serious work - not worth the cost.
I should have known before starting just based on the clubhouse - played from the blues. The greens are good, with the fringe very rough. The bunkers are mostly dirt with several having grass growing inside. Most of the fairways are very spotty with a fair amount of st augustine growing along the fairway. I was told they started working on rehaping the course 2 years ago? If it was in decent shape this would be a great place as there are several interesting holes, but I wont play it again.
