Massanutten Resort - Mountain Greens Course

Booked a Thursday round for $75 with cart. At the bag drop the assistant explained the no outside cooler ‘rule’. Then he asked us to move the vehicle due to the Restuarant. The assistant then followed me back to my car to ensure I wasn’t sneaking anything. The pro at the desk was very apologetic and gave us a small discount. ($30). The course was as empty as I have seen in years.

The course is challenging. Middle of fairway shots frequently end up in trouble. The lower course was much more accommodating.

First time on the mountain and was very impressed. Will definitely play again. Beautiful views and best fairways around.

People in from of us were horrible. Golf isn't an easy sport especially playing on a mountain. Ten to eight shots from one woman and these guys wouldn't say go through,so I had to skip holes to find no one in front of them

Pace of play was horrific. Conditions were not what I would expect for what I was charged. Course layout was OK for subdivision golf. Course does have good Mountain View’s.

We get to the course, assuming it’s $50, but the man working behind the counter only charged us $32 for being JMU students! Super friendly and funny staff, gave us great tips about the course, and even though I was in the 90s, I enjoyed the challenge for my first time playing there. Will definitely be back soon.

The course is different, hill side and not in great condition.

We really enjoyed the scenery and wildlife around the course. The course management is a must when thinking where you drive and the outcome with the slopes on the fairways, made it interesting. We thought some of the views were beautiful.

2 days prior I played the Woodside Meadows course and was very disappointed with the fairway conditions. I had high hopes that it would be better at this regular, par 72 course. I was again disappointed. The fairway conditions were as tall as you would expect in a rough. I was forced to club up like I normally do when hitting from the rough. At $75 a round ths was again a big disappointment. See the attached photos for some idea of the length of the fairway cut.

The course itself is very nice and picturesque. The fairways are indeed very tight in some places as other reviews have mentioned. The first hole is unusually tight at about 200 yards. It is only 20 to 25 yards wide. Thread a needle on this one.

Greens were a bit slow and with multiple tiers putting was at a premium. I normally use 32 putts a round on average and had 37 on this course. Could be user error or just not able to really adjust to the speed. But not all fairways were that tight and some were actually quite generous. Driving wasn't really the problem. It was the second shot to the green from the rough in the center of the fairway that caused the most problems.

One nice memory from the course was seeing deer all around. I guess they were used to having people in golfers around as they would just look at you and not run away immediately.

Myself and five friends played on Monday 9/27/2021. VSGA card clearly states play Monday- Thursday from March- October is $27 per round. Play Friday thru Sunday is $32. The course refused to honor the $27 rate even though we played on a Monday. My disappointment here is not the $5. My concern is the arrogant position the staff took to try to justify the reason.

Interesting and very hilly course above Massanutten Resort. Many holes blind to the greens. If you hit a draw, you'll like the layout, but you need to hit your driver very accurately, and you may want to move up to the next set of tees. Some fairways are very narrow and unforgiving if you miss them. Plenty of woods, steep drop-offs and meandering streams border several fairways to often vary small greens. Overall conditions when we played were average, and it was apparent they had a great deal of rain recently. Fairways were soft, and some areas mushy. I would be willing to try it again, but the worst part was - it was absolutely the "buggiest" course I've ever played. We used strong bug repellant - to little or no effect. Often, as you addressed the ball, the bugs were swarming around your head. The next day, I had bug bites around my head and on my legs. Was not a pleasant experience. Still, not a bad day.

Fun resort course built in the side of a mountain. Very scenic and challenging. Two tips if you want to have a good time: 1) Play it forward. 2) Course management. My wife had a great time also!

Course was in ok shape. There had been a lot of rain and a cool spring so it wasn't grown in properly. Certainly not the fault of the course. This course is tight and difficult. Need your straight game or you will loose. Lot of golf balls. Very scenic. The first hole is a killer!

The Meadows course is a par 65 with 9 par 3s, none of which I would call easy. Some are tight, some are well bunkered. Wide fairways but still challenging. Fun for beginners to average. There's the rub. Foot prints in the bunkers, ball marks on the greens, and a below average pace of play.

The Mountain Greens, a par 72, is beautiful visually and much more of a challenge. You can not pull your driver on the tee of every par four. It is a target course. Local knowledge is useful. As an example, the first hole is a blind shot for men, and if you hit it between 200 and 300 yards and hit the fairway, you've lost a ball. It's that 125 slope and gravity working together.

This is the championship course at Massanutten Resort and it will challenged even the most seasoned golfer. I have played this course a few times over the year and the one thing I have learned is that playing on the side of a mountain is fun and frustrating. The course is tight and extremely sloped with elevation changes and multi-tiered greens that are influenced by the mountain itself. The more times I play the course the better I understand that it is not about how you hit the ball but where you hit it, with woods and rocks just off the fairway you need to place all your tee and approach shots with accuracy in distance and direction. The first time I played this course I lost a bagful of balls just because of fairway and green slopes and lack of course knowledge. But, no matter how bad I have played all you have to do is look around and see why mountain golf is a thing of beauty just not a thing you want to do weekly.
