Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

Great course with reasonable twilight rate on Friday

One of the greatest courses in Orange County.

Pretty touch course but fun to play. I definitely play here again.

Diabolical Green Speeds

Green speeds are insanely fast right now. I’ve played this course before and have never played green speeds this fast. Fastest greens I ever played which made the round extremely difficult for an amateur like me. I consider myself a decent putter, Arccos has be putting on average like a 3 HDCP. 20’ putts with 1% slow you would have to hit 10’, it was insane. 3%-4% slopes were rolling back down hills. With such fast speeds, the subtle breaks consistently had playing partners putting the ball past holes by 10+’ and often times just off the green.

Pace was decent 4.2, would play here again cause the fast green speed isn’t the norm.

Decent Course

Loved the course, greens are tough, they are on the slope throughout, course layout is great! Slow pace though.

Steep in price

Played on 12/23/23

Course saw a little rain days prior

For being priced at 165 per player I expected a little more in course maintenance.

Tee boxes are in rough shape to say the least

Muddy, patchy, barely any grass and very uneven.

Course is challenging , with hilly layout,

Lucky to have an even stance on any shot.

Ball is usually above or below your feet.

Greens were very nice but felt like we were putting on an ice rink.

Poor management

Booked 6:20 am tee time so we could have first tee time and not be held up. They put member twosome out in front of us and threesome off the back nine in front of us. Pace ground to a halt.

Pro shop and Director of golf extremely arrogant and unhelpful.

All about making money and could care less about customer experience

Challenge

Condition was good but not great. Pace was slow. No course marshall to kick people along. Bunkers seldom raked. For the price to play this course there should be more rakes and better rakes. Bunkers the size of bus need more and better rakes.

The price I paid was good because the rate was not the regular price.

Slow pace is partially because of course policies such as cart exit signs over 100 yards from the green. Rediculous for the time it takes to park the cart and round trip to the ball walking, really slows down play.

All in all hit it straight or bring a lot of balls.

Great course conditions poor management

Booked a 6:40 tee time so i could finish quick. Staff sent groups off the front on hole 1 and back on hole 10. They sent too many groups to hole 10 for start. When we hit the turn we had to wait behind 2 groups. Threw off the round and rhythm. Entire back nine had to wait 5-10 minutes between each shot. Greens were solid. Fairways nice. But overall experience lacked due to poor course management.

above average canyon course

In good condition, nice views, but 5 hour round, waited on virtually every shot. Not a fan of canyon courses.
