Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

Fun Layout

The course is in very good condition. Lots of challenging holes with doglegs, elevation changes, fast greens and well placed bunkers. I was a single paired with a twosome. They were regulars who were very helpful with where to hit tee shots. We waited on most shots behind a foursome but still played in under 4 and a half hours.

If you have time for breakfast they have a great breakfast sandwich. I substituted black first ham for sausage patties and it was a huge and delicious sando.

Definitely recommend this course if you’re in the area

Course has gone downhill

This course has gone downhill substantially and is definitely not worth the price they charge. Fairways and greens are not well kept. Pace of play is always poor and management does not help or care. Save the money and play elsewhere.

Okay for the money

The course length is long-ish but layout was not so much inspiring. Fairways were bad but tee boxes and greens were well-maintained. Other options exist for this money around LA area.

Black Gold Course Weekday Round

This course is not an easy layout for a high handicapper. I played a morning round from the white tees with (3) women who all played from the reds, including a high school golfer. All were very pleasant playing partners and could hold their own very well. I'm a fairly high handicap player currently. The greens on this course are undulated, well guarded and are quick and roll nicely. You need to be careful at which direction you are putting from and control speed. Fairways and tee boxes are in good condition, sand traps for the lone one i was in was in good shape. The true test is to keep the ball in the fairway and not in the environmental areas of which you cannot hit out of. A true fairways and greens except for the par 3s and a few holes where the fairways are a bit wider. They have new carts with nice gps and plenty of power. Saw the cart person once or twice during the round, make sure you catch her or you will wait until the turn before the clubhouse. Back 9 seems to be more difficult than the front. I thoroughly enjoyed my round shot 87, pace of play was good but during the week and fairly early. I would not pay the regular rack rates at this course as it is higher than some other courses in the area.

Excellent Course!

This course is everything you want in a golf course. Greens were the best I’ve played on, yet very challenging, fairways were what you want to play off of, never had to relieve myself. But, the tee boxes could’ve been in slightly better shape, other than that the course is what you want to golf on. My only complaint is wrapping my head around $95 green fee yet seniors get a $37 discount. I didn’t mine paying the $95, but giving a $37 to seniors, just makes me think what is the real value of the course.
