Black Gold Golf Club
About
Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

Black Gold golf course review
Course was definitely a challenge. Fun layout. Greens were in ok shape. We were from out of town and thought we would give this course a try. We were happy with the choice but it seemed a little pricey. Would come back again if price was better.
Great First Impression.
From the moment I arrived. Excellent welcoming and professionalism shown by the starter and cart boys. Paired at the first tee with 3 random guys who were very cool dudes.
The course itself is not for beginners. I played the Blue Tees and they were a fair test. Skinny fairways and good decision making is vital. You miss the fairway or green surrounds and the deep Kikuya grass will eat you up. If you can’t drive relatively straight prepare to have a frustrating time. Otherwise the fairways and greens are all immaculate. Cart girl was fantastic and came around twice on the back.
I lost a club cover and one of the staff even went out of his way to ask other players behind me and even check the cart Bay for it. Very kind gesture. I don’t write reviews very often but definitely play Black Gold if you are in the area.
Great for the price and the best kept course I’ve played in the Brea area and surrounds.
Very Nice
The course is beautiful. Keep the ball in the fairways, and out of the traps, and you will have a great round.
Been a bit
Pace was good. Fairways were good. Greens were good. Tee boxes were good. Worth the money here. Definitely coming back over and over
Good Golf, beautiful day.
Like the layout, a few risk/reward holes. First time here, had a few times where I wish I knew safe side of fairway or green. Greens were little slow, bumpy due to recent airation. All approach shots stuck well. Fairways were good no problems. Sand a little hard, seam like all courses I played lately have same issue. Will definitely play here again.
Scratch golfers dream & High handicaps nightmare
1st time playing this course bc I heard how beautiful it was. Which it did not disappoint, fantastic views overlooking Yorba Linda with the High elevation around the course. A++.
If you appreciate scenic golf views this is the place to play. The course conditions were immaculate despite aeration of the greens.
Since the range was closed the pro shop allowed us to tee off 2hrs earlier which was very much appreciated. Pace of play was good, didn’t get backed up until the last 3 holes,, again this was duding the weekday.
But as a mid handicap golfer I was really disappointed how thick the rough was, the course is very sloppy / has undulating fairways on almost every hole. It is PGA tour like layout.
I understand course superintendents want to make it very challenging But need to make it golf friendly because not everybody is a scratch golfer. Narrow fairways didn’t help either.
It’s a nice scenic course but think they can make it playable for the avg golfer.
I would recommend this to a scratch golfer but not a mid/ high handicaps.
Pro shop & restaurant service is excellent.
I’ll say kuddos to the maintenance stuff they do keep ithe course in great condition
.
Great round to end a holiday weekend
Arrived early to friendly staff. Tee'd off on time with no pace of play hang ups. Didn't wait at one single hole for the groups in front of us. Course was in great condition for it being the end of a long hot summer. Cart girl was everywhere when we needed her to assist with our needs (which was a nice treat since we only see them once or twice on most other courses). Weather was hot and sunny but we expected that. All in all a great round (would have been better if I didn't kill my score on the front 9 though).
Great course
Great value for money. Great track, friendly staff, great views and fair price. Would definitely play again.
Black Gold
Rode the Blues (6439/71.5/131) in 4H with GK Guru's Stickboy, Sparky14 and MrKich. Thanks to Vince, Steve & Matthew for an enjoyable round. The weather was overcast on the front, finally the sun came out on the back, hot and muggy.
Appreciate the course more with each visit. Tough layout, hilly, tight in spots, but a really solid course in good to very good condition. You cannot stray more than a little here or you will incur penalty shots in bunches.
The tees had good coverage, mostly level with few unfixed divots.
The Kikuyu fairways were mostly lush and generally nice to play from. A few small areas that were thin.
The Kikuyu rough was more consistently lush than the fairways. It's penal because it's Kikuyu. Tough to make solid contact on full shots and adds another difficulity factor to chipping.
The sand traps were very well maintained, both the quality and quantity of the sand was what you look for. Excellent to play from.
The greens putted nicely and held shots well. but were firm. Medium speed and undulating, our entire group had various challenges because they looked and seemed quicker than they actually were.
The customer service was excellent from all encountered. Cart gal out making the rounds. Had a Burger and Arnold Palmer after the round. Priced what you would expect for a golf course, both the quality and quantity were both good. Good driving range that was all grass today. The carts have advanced GPS that measures to the pin also allows you to measure specific landmarks. Recommended.
Slow play
The course is everything u would want, tee box to greens.. the course is great, the one knock is the SLOW PLAY. For some, yes I know. YOU PAID AND YOU HAVE THE MONEY TO SOEND. But boy I wish they’re was a handicap rule in play so the novice players that are over 20 could be directed to the white or reds. They want to play for the blues or tips but please leave your ego out of it. You’ll get their someday. Golf is a game of rhythm and they killed it for me. 4 under in the front and had to skip 13-15 Cause I was literally waiting on the tee boxes for 10-15 mins before I can tee off.. frustrating, simply frustrating..
