Nestled in the foothills of Yorba Linda, Black Gold Golf Club sits on the site of a former Shell Oil Field. Arthur Hills, the course's designer, thought the location, with its dramatic elevation changes and panoramic views overlooking Orange County and Palm Beach, was the perfect place for a round of golf. On a clear day, the views stretch as far as the Pacific Ocean and Catalina Island. The challenging layout is filled with narrow, rolling fairways and fast greens accented by thick patches of punishing rough. Due to the hilly terrain, a flat lie is hard to come by. The front nine requires accuracy and the back nine offers some particularly interesting risk-reward opportunities. Water hazards come into play throughout Black Gold Golf Club, most notably on the 18th. This par-5 finishing hole incorporates a cascading waterfall.

Uneven Lies

Sorry for the delayed review. Played with a group on Veteran's Day. The greens were fast, bumpy, pretty ding'd up with divots people didn't fix, and lots of spike marks. The fairways are too challenging for me. The grass was spotty, (maybe improved since then?), had a lot of dead spots, and also had a lot of boggy spots because of poor drainage around sprinklers. I kept my ball in play, but never felt like the course provided any kind of "risk/reward" by giving a decent lie for a well placed shot. Just about every fairway shot was an uneven lie. If you like that kind of challenge, you'll enjoy this course. Not my cup of tee, though. Staff was nice, but it didn't make up for the on course experience for me.

Sickest course in OC

Greens are super fast. Course is pristine, couldn't find a dead spot anywhere. Only downside was the horrible Christmas music they blast on the range.

Great layout!

Liked that every hole was different. Greens were really rolling great and good shots were rewarded. Liked the different elevation changes and the friendly staff. The "beepers" we received was a good touch and was helpful in letting us know when we were up on the tee. I definitely would play this course again.

Challenging Course

I've always like Black Gold, but this round reminded me how challenging it is unless you are a very skilled golfer. The course is rarely flat anywhere, so lies are always a challenge, and the greens are like putting on ice. I've never described greens as "slick" before, but these are for some reason, and there are many greens where your ball will roll off if you don't land it in exactly the right spot. This is a pretty course, but if you get frustrated easily don't play it.

Grab the 'deal' on GolfNow if you can.

We were lucky to get the $45 hot deal for this course. It's beautiful; cut into the hills of Yorba Linda; very private feel. It's WAY too hard for us. The tee boxes are well maintained, but the fairways are full of bunkers, below/above your feet and lightening fast greens. But because it didn't cost us an arm and a leg, we had fun! It takes steely nerves, excellent course management and pro-putting. Nothing I seem to possess. Some areas were muddy and some bunkers were solid. But all in all, a fun day.

very disappointing

our tee time was about 3 tee times after a tournament at the course. after almost 3 hours for the front nine holes, we walked off the course. the course was in very spotty shape, wet in spots and dry in other spots and rough very inconsistent. not a good experience by any measure.

We will never return to this course.

Our round took five hours. Given how long it took, we will never return to this course. We were paired up with another twosome at the course and they also indicated they would not return to Black Gold.

Great view of Orange County.

Very challenging course. Using a spin ball would of been a better plan. Greens were very fast. The Marshall wasn't as friendly as the pro shop guy, but I still would go back because of the course.

Nice course layout

Greens were cut to 10.5, Wickedly fast, I've never three putted so many holes; you definitely need to stay below the hole to avoid runaway balls. In regards to the course, it was in very nice shape, very fun with many holes with variable approach options. The marshal did a good job keeping the course moving.

My take, you need to play this course more than once to learn the greens as to how they break and target position. If you are not experienced putting extremely fast greens, spend as much of your warm-up time on the practice green rather than the range. Lastly, the range was nice and I appreciated the free warm up bucket.

Greens are challenging but fair, the ball will roll true.

This is a challenging course, with a lot of trouble outside the fairways and rough. You do not want to miss left or right, as there are some severe cacti there waiting to dig into your ball and you if you venture out there. The course is reasonably long, and there are some interesting holes such as 2 where the green is drivable. The par 5's are also reachable with a good drive, generally, I had a great experience, catching up with a twosome after 9 holes, at which time it took a lot longer to finish (they were backed up behind others). They had great course knowledge and were friendly. This is a beautiful course that was fun to play.

Challenging due to elevation changes & required carried on tee shots

Played 09/24/13 The course was well maintained. There a quite a bit of elevation changes & carries off the tee on some holes that requires a little course knowledge for proper aim off the tee, so pay attention to your GPS recommendation. Fairways were wide with minimal rough and a few were very close to ob areas. There were quite a few blind shots on approach to the green mainly due to the elevation changes. The fairways just in front of the green were muddied so if you land it short then it will get stuck in the mud & if you land on the green, it is hard enough to not hold the green. The green has enough subtle undulation and fast enough to make it challenging.. The greens had some brown/barren spots but were away from the hole.

Great layout but with faults

The golf course is very challenging and scenic. It took 5 hours and I did not see a course marshal the entire time. I have real issues with the driving range. Their golf balls are awful and the hitting area is not well kept.. I would try another course in the area before I go back.

Very Scenic, views galore.

Coarse very wet considering how hot and dry it was there this day. Also too much walking. Steep terrain and alot of cart path that did not seem necessary. But quite beautiful. Will play again, understanding conditions more.t

Fun Track!

Black Gold is a beautiful course, challenging layout, spectacular views, greens fast and in good condition. For my money it's the best value around with the golf now discount of at least 17%. The only issue we had was with the service and food after the round on the clubhouse balcony. Servers were friendly but slow and the food was mediocre. I would recommend post round libations at Slaters 50/50 just a short drive away.

VERY NICE

Interesting Track, well maintained , I played at 10am and it was still a little soggy , which I found odd considering how hot it was ...but I would rather play a wet course in good shape than one not getting watered and browning out (most of the LA courses)
