Aberdour Golf Club, in Fife, is located 30 miles south of St. Andrews, on the shores of the River Forth. Aberdour was founded in 1896 but didn't start developing a golf course at its current location until 1905. Starting as a nine-hole course, the other nine were added in 1914. Today, the 18 holes cover 5,460 years, spread over land overlooking sea cliffs and on raised beaches.

If you have a habit of slicing, Aberdour won't be a day at the beach. It rewards those who shoot straight and long. A number of holes even run along the River Forth, with views of Edinburgh across the way.

The course begins with two par 3s, not that it's an easy start. The first hole, named Bell House, is 155 yards from an elevated tee down to a rocky promontory. The second, named Firs, is 155 yards, starting from a rocky platform and shooting across a bay to an elevated green set into a steep hillside. The longest hole is the 10th - Ash Tree - the only par 5, 513 yards, starting with a slight dogleg from right to left. If you can get off a good second shot past the marker, you're left with a straight pitch.

Aberdour Golf Club welcomes visitors throughout the year. Tee reservations for parties can be made directly with the club manager. Starting times are 9:30 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, and at 10 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. Sunday times are 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. Visitors are not accepted on Saturdays. The course has a clubhouse overlooking the River Forth and the Riverside Lounge.

Fife gem

This was a return visit for the first time in many years. Very impressed. Warm welcome and the staff in the professional's shop were first class. This is a wonderfully scenic course right on the shores of .River .Forth. The views are magnificent. Given the time of year and work having started on the greens, the course was in tip top condition. Some very interesting and challenging holes. It is an ideal venue for an outing. We had a super day out and would not hesitate to return.

Fun little course but lacking in some areas

I'll start with the good points.

The pro made us feel very welcome and took the time to answer various questions we had about the course.

The course was pleasant with some lovely ocean views and a few challenging holes.

Other than that, everything was pretty average.

No driving range, only nets. The chipping green was not even worth using due to the condition of it and the putting green was just Ok.

The course is a par 67 but feels like a par 64 with countless short par 4's so it doesn't really feel like you are getting to play a full round of golf. There is a lack of what I would call 'proper' holes on the course. A handful of par 4's are reachable with a well hit fairway wood. (We did play off the yellows but there didn't seem much difference between the yellows and whites).

The greens were just about good enough with regards to the trueness of them but were agonisingly slow.

All in all I would recommend this course if you are in Scotland to play a few rounds at various places as it's a scoreable and fun little course which would be nice to play as part of a 4 or 5 round mini tour. We were up in Scotland for The Open and this was the only course we played and it left us both feeling like we needed to play again. The location of the course far exceeds the quality and layout of the course.

Nice course

Played late in the afternoon on a Sunday for a reasonable price. This is an enjoyable course with some great holes. Greens were pretty poor and patchy for this time of year but fairways and tees are in good condition.

Great views of the water

Couldn’t be happier of this course, the pro shop person was extremely nice and helpful. They have had a lot of rain and the course I thought drained very well. They had the junior league play behind us with some older folks helping them. Seeing this, golf is in great hands with the past and future of golf at this course.

Aberdour Golf Club

Played this course with my wife and had a great day at Aberdour Golf Club. Made to feel really welcome on arrival and with some help from the members we were able to find our way round with ease. On completion had a lovely meal in the clubhouse and would certainly recommend this venue.

Fantastic Course

Much praise to the greenkeeping team at Aberdour. The course is beautifully presented with greens that are some of the best I've played in the past year. There's plenty of challenge here with the wind bringing out the best in your abilities.

The oncourse facilities are excellent in regard to player comfort with toilets in the middle of the course. Further, there's emergency equipment located at the clubhouse and on the course. The friendly welcome from the gentleman in the Pro Shop made us feel welcome and wanted.

In conclusion, this club is well worth a visit for players of all abilities and standards. My first visit and it won't be the last. To Mark, the head greenkeeper keep up the fantastic standard you've set and thanks for those standards allowing us to enjoy your course.

Short but challenging

In a Scottish golfing week, Aberdour was a nice interlude between challenges at Carnoustie, Scotscraig and Kittocks. It's challenging nonetheless, but its length is just a little less than some of its longer cousins. The first three holes have spectacular views.

Lovely course & friendly staff

Really enjoyed our round at Aberdour GC despite the persistent rain. The course is a reasonable test without being too challenging for the medium to high handicapper. Although the weather didn't allow us the best experience we still appreciated the great coastal views afforded by the course. Also the course stood up to the persistent rain extremely well. All the staff we met were very friendly and helpful and we will definitely be back.
