Royal Burgess Golfing Society of Edinburgh

As much as ancientness is associated with Scotland's links courses, it's a parkland tract that hosts the world's longest-running golfing society: Royal Burgess, dating to 1735. The course, which dates to 1896, is plenty charming as well, with an intimate, antique feel and some fun bits of quirk, like an extra-long flagstick on 7, a fully blind tee shot on 11 and a 245-yard par 4 to finish.

Royal Burgess also has one of golf's great clubhouses, full of memorabilia that nods toward the club's nearly 300 years of members, competitions and memories. And though the club itself is private and exclusive, they are quite welcoming to visitors. Its proximity to the Edinburgh airport makes it a convenient first or last place to play in country, and it's a round that golf history buffs will especially enjoy.

I played here "by accident" after another course was unable to honor my tee-time. Boy am I glad that happened...

I have been playing golf for 35 years and have frequented some of the nicest golf areas on the planet (Hawaii, California, Florida, South Carolina, and now Scotland) and it was a privilege and honor to play here. I was paired with two longtime members and a golf pro (an American Expat from Frankfurt who had just finished attempting to qualify for the Senior Open).

I cannot overstate how friendly a welcome I received at this course. The members I played with bought me coffee at the midway house and offered me a pint at the end of the round (I sat with them and had water instead - didn't want to be tipsy driving around on the "wrong-side" of the road). They are very proud of their club and eager to share it with you.

Founded in 1735, this club is widely recognized as the oldest golf club in the world (club, not course). You would expect a stuffy old crowd here - but no - the most welcoming and enjoyable round I have ever played - on a beautifully maintained, gorgeous and very playable parkland course. The rental clubs were excellent condition newer Titleists - including AP1 irons.

The course was in perfect condition and proved a great test of golf. As with most courses, if you hit it down the middle every time then we would all be single figure handicappers and the game would be easy. This course tests all levels of golfers, with trees and bunkers statically positioned for every player, no matter your handicap.

The clubhouse facilities are stunning having just been fully refurbished. On arrival, you are met by a member of staff who give you a tour of the clubhouse and a presentation on the history of the club. (Its the oldest in the world have records dating back to 1735). There are some great artefacts and memorabilia on display within the clubhouse. Food is available, be it in the formal dining room or simply in the spike bar, and take it from me , it was excellent.
