St. Michael's Golf Club sits atop Gallow Hill, providing spectacular views past the River Eden to the historic buildings of St. Andrews. The course sprawls across a prehistoric settlement that is protected by Historic Scotland. The terrain is an interesting mix of wooded parkland and undulating heathland with a well-draining sandy base. The golf course features small greens and narrow fairways that place a premium on accuracy. While it may not have the prestige or the classic links layout of St. Andrews, St. Michael's Golf Club offers just as formidable a test. The challenges begin immediately on the first hole, an uphill par 4 with a fairway that slopes right to left. St. Michael's signature hole is the par-3 15th, which many consider to be the most demanding short hole in Fife. There is a large dip to the left and rear of the green, a bunker to the front right, and out-of-bounds to the left and on the railway line behind.

Great value for money

There were some very interesting and quirky holes and some similar looking holes. The greeens were excellent and as the course was dried out it felt like links. Great value for money for an enjoyable course.

Good course

For a tenner and £1.00 booking fee you really cannot go wrong. This course does not have markings pointing to next tee which is required on the 1st 9 holes. Kinda not layer out like you would expect. Overall though after asking a few folk where the next hole was it was a really nice course. Greens were good. Really scenic course. I loved it

A must visit

Being a regular visitor to St Andrews’ for many years I was delighted to play this hidden Gem of a course only a few miles away from the Town.

Having reviewed this course at least once before . . .

I would add that, while there are a few quirky holes, it's a decent challenge. Going to St. Michael's is about inexpensive golf for many locals. But, by virtue of that very thing, the people are a major attribute. The course itself is somewhat hilly and dry, but the greens are pristine and putting there is a pleasure! If you'd like to meet real Scots doing what real Scots do, this is the place. If you're looking to hobnob with rich Americans, this isn't the place.

Rolling Hills Near St. Andrews

If you're looking to check out your game prior to a round at a more expensive course, this is a good tract. Extremely friendly and accommodating staff. Rolling hills and a few quirky holes, but, overall, a fun test for the medium to high handicapper.

A little gem

This little gem is tricky! It is not long, but club selection is critical to being successful here! I played it three times in two weeks as St Andrews was busy with some of the courses closed for the Open next week.

The first round conditions were benign, dry fast fairways and quite slow greens, I didn’t show it the respect it deserved, result: 5 over my handicap! Next wind was blowing from the west! 20+ mph! Again way over my handicap. Had another go on Thursday: birdied 13 after decent drive went long and left, shaped 3 wood through the gap in the conifers to 10’ & holed the putt! A sublime moment! Finished 1 under handicap & won match 2 up!

Yes, a tricky inexpensive little gem! (The driving line on 18 is important, I found it once in 3 goes, result was drive 265 yds. Miss it you’ll be in the trees or bunkered on the left!)

pleasant round

We have played St Michaels a few times and would be happy to retun again. Course has some quirky holes particularly on the back 9. Course conditions were dry and running fast on the fairways. Greens fairly slow but in nice condition. People at the club are really friendly and make you feel welcome. Catering has been good in the past but didn't use on this visit

Nice wee course with some challenging holes

Nice course with the fairways quite dry almost like a links course. Good greens, quite true and fast. Some quirky holes towards the end of the course. Would play again.
