Fairways were in good shape two green were damaged Photo submitted by phischman on 08/07/2013
Barbara, the starter, is spectacular....
I had a great time at this golf course. Most favor Split Rock, but I've only played both once about 35 years ago, and this golf course is just fine.
I got to the place and was a little lost. People were nice and pointed me to the pro shop. I got a cart and met Barbara who is the starter on the first tee. Big outing so she was trying to manage a lot. She did beautifully.
I was early so went to the putting green and a rarity nowadays... chipping allowed! I thin that alone is worth the price of admission!
The golf cart was a bit tattered. After I played my second shot on the par 5 2nd, the buggy died. I took my bag off and carried, but called a nice fellow named Nick in the pro shop requesting a replacement.
It was a hot day. Maybe in the 90s not sure. After I got to No. 6 I called again. Nick was very nice, apologized, and said he'd try again. Not much later along came Barbara and then another associate of hers. It was very much a friendly experience. No tension, no crabbiness at all. So valuable in this day and age!!
I got a nice cart, and was off to the races. My fellow golf companions were regulars. I'm bad with names but one was a retiring IRS agent and finance guy. Everybody knew him, and he was.a very good golfer.
A Korean couple was our better half. They are 'members', and love the place. They are in their 70s but the Mrs. was a putting demon! "Mrs. One Putt", I called her.
At one point, heading home, a fox trotted right out in the open. A big beautiful fox in the Bronx! This was the mama fox according to our group members, who told me they have a litter of babies.
I played this course last and one once in the 80s. It was the Publix Qualifier and the place was hardpan galore. A real sloppy track.
Not anymore. The greens were pretty buff. Yes, you'll find closer-cropped putting surfaces at the nearby country clubs, but for a muni the surfaces were excellent. Fairways were too, in spite of the lack of regard by golfers.
There was water in coolers. I play at other supposedly upper-crust Westchester public venues where there is no H2O at all! Often, the concessions are cash only.
Not so here. I was able to buy a cold rink with my credit card. Yup... this Pelham links had not only free water every few holes on the tees, but a beverage cart on the course that can actually process a credit card transaction! Whoa!!
This is a good venue where nice people golf and work.
5+ hour round typical of a Muni course
This would be such a great course if it went private. Unfortunately, the city packs them in and you can expect to play a 5 1/2 hour round in fair condition. I will say that the greens were in very good shape and the fairways were good as well. Everywhere else including the sand “dirt” traps were a mess.
Oh… bring bug spray. You’ll get eaten alive on Split Rock.
Mosquito problem
Golf course was great, some of the tee boxes need some attention but overall it’s nice. Holes 1-9 are brutal with mosquitoes. Don’t go there during the july and august
The price isn’t right
First time going and for the price the course wasn’t up to par. Tee boxes looked unmaintained. Mosquitos made it really difficult to play without being bitten all over. One of the staff members was quite rude and told my friend he was bad. Wasn’t worth the money, and won’t go back
Forgiving course but I still suck
Wide fairways for the most part and not crowded for 7am tee time. There was a decent amount of litter throughout which I tried picking up when I could
Great course so close to the city
When pace of play is reasonable. For a good golfer maybe not enough variety though. Way too many mosqiutoes though.
Mosquitos
Impossible to enjoy a round here due to mosquitos. At all times, you have 10-15 mosquitos on you and that’s not an exaggeration. If you’re even close to the tree line, you have 5 seconds to swing a club or you will be dive bombed by mosquitos. The course itself is actually great with great pace of play for NYC, but brutal due to mosquitos.
Easily 200 mosquito bites on my legs, no exaggeration.
Play here in early spring or late fall when there are no mosquitos, unplayable in the summer due to mosquitos.
Worst course in the east coast - Split Rock
Not we’ll maintained, no warning of unplayable holes due to water pools, extremely expensive, and extremely buggy.
Split rock
When you reserve on GolfNow they always put you on split rock instead of Pelham. Pelham is the better course and has no misquitos. Afternoons on split rock are miserable holes 7-9 are almost unplayable because of the the bugs and the bar/grill and snack shop always close early. That said course is in pretty good shape for a public course but the tee boxes need some work. Bugs are just too much for me
Split Rock sucks
This place sucks if you have to play Split Rock. And they dont show you which course you are booking when you book. Very misleading and Split rock is almost unplayable with all the bugs.
Having a day on the Links
Understanding this is a Municipal Course,
The fairways where is ok.
Greens where is good conditions. I hope that the Management can get a Captial Improvments plan together, these two courses would be hidden gems
Absolutely brutal pace of play, no organization
The course itself is solid. $70+ for a tee time here is pretty high. The pace of play is unbearable. We showed up for the 9:45 tee time and the 8:51 was still on the box….we went off the back only to get jammed up on the turn with all of the 1:30 tee times. 6 hour round. Course conditions were solid. Great glizzies at the turn.
