Split rock
Split rock was very very poor the flys we’re everywhere and was impossible to enjoy the golf as was getting bitten.
Had to leave after 9 holes.
Also booked online and got fully charged and there was no carts available we had to walk!!
It’s fine
The definition of FINE but they have good sausages at the snack shop
Poorly maintained, Terrible greens/sand traps
Besides terrible course conditions, the parking lot has huge pot holes… flat tire!!!
Not a bad course…..but the bug….HOLY SHEET!!!!
When I booked the course for a 6:36am tee time on a Saturday, I just looked at the ratings but didn’t read the actual reviews. Getting a Saturday early tee time a few days prior is next to impossible but this course always seems to have them. Didn’t pay any mind to why. Well, we arrived at the course and our immediate impression was, the golf carts are all beat up, nobody there attending the check in area, the guy at the pro shop was cranky and unfriendly and the parking lot looked like bombs when off leaving craters everywhere. We started playing and we’re impressed with the upkeep of the grass. The course was actually nice. That was until we started getting attacked by mosquitos and horse flies and when I say attacked, I mean all out swarming Kamikaze type attack. It got so bad around holes and 8 and 9 that we couldn’t even focus on our shots. When we got back to the clubhouse, we used the restroom and saw a sign warning of bugs and bug spray is highly recommended and sold in the pro shop. Too bad we didn’t use the restroom upon arriving to see this sign over the urinal. The unfriendly guy in the pro shop could have mentioned the bugs to us and advised the big spray. When we returned the motorboat sounding cart, once again, nobody there to check us out. There was also litter all over the parking lot and cart area.
Course decent, but everything else was horrible and I’d only play here if I’m absolutely desperate.
Mosquito heaven
Alright… i thought it was a joke when people say its bug life coming to reality…. Well that was true… Glad I bought bug spray and yet i still got mosquito bites.. liked the course tho. Green is challenging but was fun. Bug spray is a must.
Get the bugs out
We played the split rock course. Extremely buggy! Better make sure you have bug spray in your bag.
What was annoying was that there were marshmallows all over the course. Hard to locate your ball with all the white marshmallows. The ranger should have been on that!
Architect
Overgrown underbrush, overhanging old growth trees that don't allow for sunlight to help dry out thus perinealy wet low lying course. The resultant skeeter assault is a distinct and unfortunate feature! Though in general course appeared to I be better landscaped than when last visited, toilets require better attention, soap, tp and cleanliness issues! Staff didn't inform me that while I thought I had reserved for Pelham, I was assigned Split Rock? Not a good start to the day! Further, wasn't informed of that little nugget 'till meeting with the starter on 1st tee of Pelham?
Bug Bite Heaven
Pelham could be a magnificient golfcourse if only it was maintained. During the summer it is bug bite heaven and dryed out loke a dessert. I recently played at the course and received over 20 bug bites. As a NYC resident I pay a lot of city taxes so expect better playing conditions on a NYC public golf course.
This course is high handicap friendly
Aside from some of the fairways being a little choppy, they are all pretty wide open. It is a good feeling knowing you have a lot of area to ‘miss’ and still scrape together a decent score. I played the entire front nine without losing a ball, and I have a tendency to slice at least one shot per round into no man’s land. Great first experience at this course and I plan to go back as much as possible.
Architect...VJC
As a golf experience, sorry to say not good. Was not told at the reception desk that we were assigned Split Rock, not Pelham? That's rude!
Before play toilet tissue was mostly unavailable in 3 of 4 stalls...not good! Course was much improved over past memory but still plagued by unplayable rough, roped off wet areas and overabundance of old growth overhanging trees!
Spli rock amenities ar 9th/10th hole turnaround and cart person availability is good. Three dollar parking fee is not! Where's that money going?
BUGS GALORE.
Will never play here again. The bugs were absolutely overbearing. Buddy I played with has 87 mosquito bites on his legs. We applied bug spray every hole.
Not worth it at all.
The bugs are a serious problem. Back 9 was better than the front.
