Fairways were in good shape two green were damaged Photo submitted by phischman on 08/07/2013
Split Rock Golf
Played this course right after it reopened in July. Greens, bunkers & fairways were in real good condition. Played it again on Labor Day & was shocked at the course conditions. Fairways were patchy the greens were unmaintained with high fescue growing in many. I actually lost a ball in tbe bunker. Absurd. Greens were aerated but there should have been an aerification notice when booking. Mosquitoes are always a nuisance but I won't judge the course for that. Hope American Golf can get it's act together. I've heard Clearview Golf & Dyker Beach Golf which they also run arr in poor shape.
Course in bad shape and not maintained
The course is in terrible shape. Would not recommend playing here. We did 18 holes earlier today morning. The bunkers are hard as rocks and full of weeds and dirt. Never seen a course in worse shape. The first 9 holes were bug infested so would recommend bug spray and not starting before 10am. The fairways and rough are not trimmed. I included one of the bunker pictures, and most of them are similar. The fees with carts are reasonable but the course is not at all worth the time.
This course is terrible
Played this course a few times,1st time this year on it, was shocked,
The greens were half grass half sand, the ball was getting covered in wet sand on way to the hole, greens were all covered in small holes probably for drainage, the bunkers hadn’t being raked this year full of dirt and leaves,16th fairway horrendous, not if it was free would I go back, $160 wasted on this course for 2 golfers
Mosquito minefield
Booked this course for 6:20am tee time, the night before because it was available. We will never go back. There were mosquitoes everywhere but holes 7-9 were particularly unbearable. It felt like we were in a horror movie being attacked by mosquitoes. There were about 50 mosquitoes swarming you at any given moment. We had to skip those holes. The starter was nice enough to come check on us with insect repellent but it didn’t help.
ADH
I played Pelham Bay. Less bugs in August.
Greens excellent.
Healthy safety done well.
Usual number of scary inconsiderate massless people while waiting. Most responsible.
Considering COVID limits ,fairways and rough are OK.
But, no effort to manage bunkers, over grown with weeds. Could clear and make them waste bunkers.
Greens fee have increased, but worth money..
WORST COURSE EVER
DO NOT PLAY THIS COURSE!!! GARBAGE, MOSQUITOES, AND CRAP EVERYWHERE!!! THE COURSE HAS NOT BEEN MAINTAINED IN AT LEAST 20 YEARS!! EVERYTHING IS OVER GROWN!! WORST CONDITIONS IVE EVER PLAYED IN DO NOT GO BY PICTURES!! THE SAND TRAPS ARE FILLED WITH OVERGROWN WEEDS, THERE ARE NO FAIRWAYS JUST A FEILD WITH HOLES IN IT!!! PEOPLE DRIVE ALL OVER THE GREENS WITH THE CARTS!!! ITS EMBARRASSING THEY CALL THIS PLACE A GOLF COURSE!!
Ok Heres the deal on- Bugs, condition, etc.
Ok so I made the tee time knowing all of the prior reviews that have been written here because I used to play PB/SR frequently and wanted to give it a shot and see which parts were true for myself. This is my first review of anything which says something about Golfers: 1) Bugs/Mosquito's- I did play Pelham Bay NOT Split Rock which is apparently where they're worse, BUT there was at least one groundskeeper spraying the area which is good start! and all you can really do in this case. I brought a bottle of Cutter and wore pants and didn't have any issues at all. Totally forgot about it after a couple holes. 2) Course Condition- Yes, the course is beat up. The fringe of the greens, parts of the fairway, very high rough grass/tough to see lie and find ball, tee boxes, all far far below the standard of upkeep that the course usually has. Yes there's trees down form Isias storm but nothing obstructing at all. Yes, the sand traps are essentially unplayable. Some you can hit out of, others are just overgrown with weeds. However, this really isn't that big of a deal. Friendly rules dictate you drop right outside the sand without a penalty. Personally, one round without having to hit out of the beach did not bother me at all. Fact is, PB/SR is a business, and like many/all, took a big hit from early days of Covid. I have no doubts they're regrouping and will put the money towards the needed improvements either by end of fall season or start of next season. Maybe this isn't the $75 round you'd love to play but it is indeed playable and even enjoyable if you're hitting well. 3)- PACE- Ah, PB/SR is the king of booking close together tee times and causing backup, slow pace, etc. It is what it is. My 2-sum was stuck behind a very very slow 4-sum. It happens. There was some backup but not that much. If pace is a priority for you, try and look elsewhere if you can. Otherwise if there's not a pitching wedge stuck up your b hole, PB/SR is still a plenty enjoyable round with it's notoriously great layout.
Sunday afternoon
Friendly staff. Nice layout. Slow pace. Forgiving fairways. Great NYC public course with friendly staff and local golfers.
Worst Course Ever - Do Not Play Here
The mosquitos will eat you alive even after you use bug spray. They will eat you through your polos. Our polos were blood stained as we killed them while they were eating us. The course is in disrepair. The bunkers have lots of weeds and are unplayable. The water bodies have no water in them besides one hole. A horrendous experience all around. The course is making money by selling you a $3 mosquito repellent for $12. And the mosquito repellant doesn't work. There are millions of mosquitos. This is hands down the absolute worst course.
Worst round of the year
This is a mosquito fest. I’ve been here a few times in the past and never thought the course was great by any means but it was playable. Summer time makes mosquito situation quite bad to the point where we had to drop out in the middle and I couldnt take a shot without getting bitten all over by a swarm of mosquitoes. I was bleeding in the end.
What makes it worse is the pace of play here. They overstuff everyone and many beginner players come here so every time you get to the next tee box there is always 3-4 groups just waiting. It was an unbearable experience. Safe yourself the trip.
Stay away from the course (at least this year)
Mosquitos at the course are out of control-ruins your entire round, stay away from this place.
Play if you enjoy mosquito bits and terrible conditions
This course is in absolutely AWFUL condition.
Me and my group got annihilated by mosquitos and left with blood stains on our legs from trying to kill so many.
Bunkers legitimately have grass growing in them.
Fairways are burnt and weedy
To be honest it’s problematic neglect due to covid but this is shamefully bad
Split Rock is absolutely horrible
Do not play split rock, from the mosquitoes to the rough around the green I wouldn't play there for free.
Bring Bug Spray
Bring multiple cans of bug spray. Mosquitos are horrendous here. i reapplied every 3/4 holes and managed to get only two bites. my partner, who only applied it at the first tee... not so lucky. course is decent to poor shape. A couple of the bunkers have more weeds than sand. round took 5.5 hours. Of the NYC muni's... not my first choice

The other two golf course in Staten Island which are run by American Golf are also in horrible condition.
