Fairways were in good shape two green were damaged Photo submitted by phischman on 08/07/2013
This course needs better maintenance
Fact that the season has not yet fully open, I refrain from giving an overall impression.
Terrible mosquitoes
Staffs were very kind, but too many mosquitoes attacked us.
Split Rock is mosquito infested
I'm scarred for life after we were brutally tortured through 9 holes with me personally getting 130 mosquito bites. The four of us account for over 400 mosquito bites combined....
We debated quitting earlier but thought it would get better and that we could tough it out....but it was just that bad. Every tee box, any tree, in the rough, all over the carts, there was no escaping.
Everyone around said Pelham has much less mosquito issues.
Be careful, be safe. Might want to wait until the fall to visit this course.
Absolutely the Worst
Looks like the course has not been taken care of since last year. I understand it just opened cause of Covid but maybe they should not have opened till cleaning it up. No one could escape the bugs no matter how much bug spray you put on. I used to like this place but won't be back for a while.
Mosquito City and You're The Mayor
Splitrock has mosquitoes everywhere, even at noon. Moved over to Pelham which was in great condition and no mosquitoes.
Just up and running
Played the Pelham Course a few times and always great. First time on the Split Rock side. So the course isn’t back to where it normally is because of the shutdown. A lot high rough and overgrown areas. Still a great job in the short amount of time they were open. Everything is spread out and contact free. I’m sure in a couple weeks everything will be trimmed and back to normal and a great local course for the money
pace of play
we had a 2 pm tee time and arrived at 1:30 pm. we had to wait 40 minutes to get a cart because there was a shortage. After getting a a cart we had to wait to tee off until 2:45. The course was completely backed up. There where 23 players on the third hole par three. I t took close to three hours to play the front nine..We stopped playing after 12 holes at 6;30. There was no one in the pro shop to speak about the delay. Totally unacceptable.
Feb Golf
Great conditions for Feb2. No one in front of us so we flew.
Nice winter golf
The course is definitely fun to play. Some of the greens are a little beat up and need work. Don’t think it rained too much the night before, but there were definitely spots that flooded and did not drain well. Otherwise really nice day and course.
Nice course. Horrible management.
There is ZERO regulation by the staff on pace of play. They don’t try to pair people up to improve pace. On hole 7 i hit a huge traffic jam with 9 players in front of me a 5some and in front of them another 4some. Instead of going to 10th hole, I went back to 1, there was no starter to let him know that I was cutting back, it seemed like people were jumping holes in whichever order they wanted, there was not a single ranger on the entire course (didn’t see one) so everybody was doing whatever they wanted.
If management can get their s#%@$ together, this would be a much nicer experience.
Don’t waste your time
It’s an ok course, but after 2 hours and 15 minutes we still weren’t done with 6 holes. 4 groups backed up on every single hole, teed off at 1140am and wouldn’t have finished until the sun came down. No rangers, bunch of guys who can’t play golf taking 6 drops each in the tee box with no respect for other players.
Solid Everyday course
If you can avoid the weekends this course is a good option. It will be a 5 hour round if you can play earlier. The conditions are decent for a very heavily used course, and the layout is straightforward. There are a few great holes, #8 for example. Also on the weekends there is a $3 NYC parking fee (which is supposed to be all the time, but only sporadically enforced) which is obscene.
The staff varies from very pleasant to downright nasty. The clubhouse is a cool old Art Deco place, but constantly booked for events that you have to work your way around. Pelham Bay, the easier course, is constantly booked for huge tournaments, so Split Rock gets the overflow of daily players.
If you remember that you are playing in a huge city, and have the luxury of having a flexible schedule you can get lucky and have a nice day. Or not.
