Fairways were in good shape two green were damaged Photo submitted by phischman on 08/07/2013
Mosquitos Zombies
We started at 6:12 am and the mosquitos didn't stop eating us up until almost the entire game I suggest not to plsy there until after lunch apparently they love to eat you during the early mornings the mosquitos even went through your clothes they must have vampire teeth in addition they have to trim the grass shorter by the rough and cover some of the damaged fairways. My other issue is that I left messages for the manager and assistant manager about reservation issue not one of these people return my call...most unlikely return to play here...
Hornets
They seriously need to do something about the hornets. They are in bunkers, near greens and on fairways. Not just a few, swarms of them hovering around several areas making balls unplayable.
......Never Again
Never goin back again. Hate after 1st round and last round!! Mosquitoes and Wasps infected course. Booking was deceiving. You book not knowing which of the 2 courses you’ll play. Booking needs to be by course. You’ll end of playing split rock.
Go else where
If you play on split rock you will probably end up being dead by West Nile virus. So much bugs and mosquitos . The staff sell you tee time knowing that they will send out shotgun outing an hour and a half later fill every tee box with foursome. So if you want to actually finish your round adding extra 2 hours.
Please avoid this course
There are two 18 hole courses in club. One of a kind in NYC muni courses. But mosquito condition is really really bad. Bug spray will not help you. Our foursome gave up by the 6th hole. It is too bad because the course layout is pretty nice. Bunkers needs work, but until mosquito conditions are corrected I would stay away. Alternatively, you can wait till winter to play.
Mosquitos
The pace was very slow even for a Sunday. The mosquitos were absolutely unbearable. We had bug spray and there were just swarms all over the course. Overall the course needed to be mowed. Not a great experience for the money. We will not be going back anytime soon.
Infested with bugs
A miserable day. Mosquitos run rampant on the course, the pace of play was tedious - a six hour round., The tee boxes and fairways look like they have been attacked by gophers. And if you are not in the fairways, well it's hardpan or weeds. Not worth the money
MOSQUITO CITY
THE PLACE IS A HEALTH HAZARD DUE TO MOSQUITO PROBLEM.. Management chose to sell bug spray and turned a blind eye to the issue. You cannot stand on the tee for more than 3 seconds without getting surrounded by mosquitos, then they will surround your cart and wait for you. It was a terrible experience, such a shame for one of the best city public courses. The borough president should intervene and close the course until the mosquito problem is no longer a health hazard.
Big Disappointment
The bottom line with this place is they are shortsidedly only in it for the money. Course was not too full because it was hot hot hot. Lunch stand was closed, only water was on the 10th hole. They used cheap mechanics rags to dry off the balls after cleaning. At least 4 hole signs were missing. Lunch was horrible. Played only 2 days here this year. Both days the same. They book you minutes behind an outing without any pause, so you wait for the outing the whole time. The take away is I feel ripped off at this place.
Customer Service Help Needed
Booked on golf now although no idea which of the 2 courses we booked for. Was told at front desk we’re playing Pelham and got to first tee and was told we’re on the other course. Got out ok on other course in the end. Slow 1st 6/7 holes. Hot day. Limited drinking water on the course. Cart attendant only came round once. Finished and had a bite, no menu’s in grill room. Also, Golf Now booking not eligible for same booking through Golf Zing.
Nice place, good course, management needs some help with customer service.
Play early
I’ve played this course many times. Today I played at 7am in a twosome and played in 3 hrs. I’ve also played here and it’s taken 7 hrs. Lesson learned
In bad shape
It's a shame that this course isn't maintained. I know NYC munis get the short end, but this was probably the worst I've ever seen it
Good Round
Only the rain still not letting the staff fix a few Fairways.
But other than that, the greens are in pretty good shape
Classic course in an NYC muni
Following up on my recent review with more pictures. I'll add that the old classic features that you see on this course, like top-shot bunkers and great mounding in the greens, makes it a gem. I agree the conditioning, especially the tee boxes, is not pristine but it is pretty decent all things considered. The course definitely needs some cutting of tree branches in certain spots, such as the trees on the left side blocking the corner on the dogleg 8th, and the trees on the left of the 10th. But this is still the best traditional NYC muni.
Follow-up to earlier review
Split Rock and Pelham Bay are my favorite of the traditional NYC muni courses (i.e., not counting Ferry Point). Split Rock is the better course for the better golfer and Pelham Bay is more fun, with wider fairways. It has some great greens and makes very good use of the features of the property. Holes 12-18 are particularly good. Don't expect top resort-level conditioning but overall it is usually in good shape (except after a lot of rain- it doesn't drain well).
Business owner
Pelham Bay is the worst golf course that we have played so far.Terrible and wet fairway, bumping green.and messing tee box. We will never come back to play again unless course get improved. For $75 green fee we can play in much better golf course .
