Fairways were in good shape two green were damaged Photo submitted by phischman on 08/07/2013
Solid Everyday course
If you can avoid the weekends this course is a good option. It will be a 5 hour round if you can play earlier. The conditions are decent for a very heavily used course, and the layout is straightforward. There are a few great holes, #8 for example. Also on the weekends there is a $3 NYC parking fee (which is supposed to be all the time, but only sporadically enforced) which is obscene.
The staff varies from very pleasant to downright nasty. The clubhouse is a cool old Art Deco place, but constantly booked for events that you have to work your way around. Pelham Bay, the easier course, is constantly booked for huge tournaments, so Split Rock gets the overflow of daily players.
If you remember that you are playing in a huge city, and have the luxury of having a flexible schedule you can get lucky and have a nice day. Or not.
Longest Round Ever
Round took 6 hours! They really pack them in here, which is to be expected for a NYC course, but this was a little too much. They did not even have enough golf carts to accommodate everyone that was out. You had to wait at the cart return area and hope someone was finishing up soon . When we were making the turn, the 2nd tee had 8 carts waiting to tee off! Course was in decent enough shape for NYC in the summer, was not dried out like you might expect. Everyone is very friendly. Your options in NYC are limited, but you pay way too much for what you get here. As mentioned, you don't have much choice in NYC, so I will be back.
Sunday Funday
Just a short drive over the bridge to experience Split Rock and Pelham. The course is in good shape for October. Pace of play is what you expect on a NYC course on a sunny weekend day.
Good round
Greens in great shape on Pelham. Fairway a little beat up, rough a little too long. No grill person at 8am. Excellent Pace.
Extremely slow play. No Starter or Ranger
Played at 11:30 on Sunday AM. The course was packed. There was no starter on the first tee. By the third hole there were 3 groups on the tee. 3 hours to play the front 9. Also on both the first tee and the 10th tee the water jugs were totally empty.
Having played many courses in the area on a weekend, I expect slow play, but this was a disgrace.
Played Split Rock for the first time
First time I played. Absolutely recommend. Course was in good shape. Pace of play was slow but not worse than any other NY course. Will absolutely play again. Also great that it is close to City Island.
Great course, starter was a jerk
Course was nice, pace of play was great. The only downside was the starter, who rushed us into an earlier slot. We booked 7:20, he pushed us into the 7:12, giving us not much time to get loose. Then he exclaimed that we were late. We were NOT late. We were 5 minutes early for the original time we had booked. Really a bad way to start a round. Other than that the round was great.
Northern Bronx Golfing
Any day is a great day for golf and living in the city, this course provides a great public course option. Although that does come with the common failings of public courses. The greens are not well maintained so from hole to hole the green speeds vary greatly. Also, there are players of varying skill sets, so after about 11 am, there can be significant slow down to pace of play. Conversely, it did begin to rain heavily at the 17th hole, which caused some difficulty in finishing out the round. Overall, a great time.
Mosquitos Zombies
We started at 6:12 am and the mosquitos didn't stop eating us up until almost the entire game I suggest not to plsy there until after lunch apparently they love to eat you during the early mornings the mosquitos even went through your clothes they must have vampire teeth in addition they have to trim the grass shorter by the rough and cover some of the damaged fairways. My other issue is that I left messages for the manager and assistant manager about reservation issue not one of these people return my call...most unlikely return to play here...
Hornets
They seriously need to do something about the hornets. They are in bunkers, near greens and on fairways. Not just a few, swarms of them hovering around several areas making balls unplayable.
......Never Again
Never goin back again. Hate after 1st round and last round!! Mosquitoes and Wasps infected course. Booking was deceiving. You book not knowing which of the 2 courses you’ll play. Booking needs to be by course. You’ll end of playing split rock.
Go else where
If you play on split rock you will probably end up being dead by West Nile virus. So much bugs and mosquitos . The staff sell you tee time knowing that they will send out shotgun outing an hour and a half later fill every tee box with foursome. So if you want to actually finish your round adding extra 2 hours.
