Great course if you live in NYC
Pelham Bay/Split Rock is a great course - especially if you live in NYC. You would never know you were in the Bronx once you are out on the course ... just feels like another round of golf in the country.
I was amazed at how well the course played seeing how it was mid October. Bravo to the crew over there.
I'll try and get in another round or two this fall.
Pleasant Surprise
I've been playing the Pelham and Split Rock Courses for more than 15 years. Now that I live six minutes away, it's quite convenient. It's a great place to get my golf fix. Because it's so popular, it gets a little run down as the season progresses. However, yesterday's round was a pleasant surprise as the course was in GREAT CONDITION and the pace of play at 630am was FANTASTIC. Yes, we were the first out and there were only two of us, but we were done in three hours and I tied the best round of my career. I'll be back before the season is over.
Twilight disaster
I play on this course from time to time and ended up giving up this course after 9th hole. Took just about three hours to finish nine, and on 6th hole - we called the clubhouse to ask for assistance from a ranger. None showed up and we were left to fend for ourselves to ask groups to move along. It was a 250pm tee off so I thought it would be 2 and quarter hrs for 9 hole at most but it was just plain bad. Tee boxes were uneven, though greens were in OK condition. Overall, what we thought to be a deal in afternoon became an overpayment of late season course condition of NYC public municipal course. I would suggest early morning tee off; otherwise just avoid this course. Understand NYC course would be packed but having no assistance I think is unacceptable.
Left after 9.
9 holes took 2 hours and 45 minutes and then there was a 30 minute wait to tee off on 10.
Pelham Split Rock Fairways and Greens
This track is a New York City municipal course.
Considering the fact that it is a city course, it's in quite nice shape. The fairways and the greens are well kept. However, no one repairs a ball mark or replaces a divot. Why not respect the game.
The rough is about 6 inches and can be difficult.
The rest of the areas need considerable work.
The cart paths are crumbled and very poor.
There are downed branches and trees in the deep rough and woods. It's not very appealing to the eye.
The course plays longer than it is. There's a good deal of into the wind play.
During the week, they offer a deal with lunch and two drinks. Can't beat the price
Has Seen Better Days
Nice course layout. Pace of play was very slow. Course is in ok'ish conditions. If you get a HoteDeal on GolfNow go and play otherwise stay away.
Pelham Bay or Split Rock??
When I booked this reservation under golf now, it doesn't tell you which course your playing on.
Above average
Wide open layout, fairways and greens in excellent shape. Rough really difficult, challenging.
A little slow play off the first, 5 1/4 hours.
Still will go back.
They over book by ungodly amounts .... cheap round but be prepared for 7 hours of golf ( if that's what you want to call golf )
Great value for solid public course
Did not have high expectations for Split Rock at all coming into my first round at this facility. Must say I was more than pleasantly surprised. Proshop attendant, starter, and ranger were not the most helpful, but didn't really cause any issues. Course was in pretty good shape. Impressive bunkering for a public course. A few really fun holes, a few tougher ones, and a few boring ones. Overall, had a great day! Looking to get back out there sometime soon!
Conditions could be better
I've played Pelham Bay several times and the course was in the poorest condition this time. The greens were extremely slow, and they groundskeeper made it cartpath only although the course was dry as a bone. For a Wednesday, the round should not have taken 5 hours.
I really enjoy playing there, but this round could have gone a lot better.
Fun forgiving track for Bronx/NYC locals
Pelham: Played here about 2 months and conditions improved since then. Not as many burnt/bare spots on fairways and greens. Putting on these greens takes gettting used to because balls run really slow. Can't really cut the greens lower due to the amount of play this place gets.
Course design is classic with fairly wide fairways on most holes makes the track really forgiving. Pelham bay is walking friendly and food/cart deals through the course is probably the best deal in NYC golf. A steal of a bargain when you speak to the course directly.
Stay away on weekends
Nice course, good value for the money but a 5+ hr round at 3:15 on a Sunday. Rangers tried to mive things along but to no avail.
Mosquito
This course is notorious for having lots of Mosquito. After experiencing the course with mosquito, the rumor became the truth. I am not willing to play in near future when mosquitos are around me although I put vast amount of bug repellent.
