Fairways were in good shape two green were damaged Photo submitted by phischman on 08/07/2013
nothing
the course had three temporary greens and for the money it was not worth it.
Rough shape
I've played each course here one other time.
This was the worst I've seen it. Several greens were scorched and temporary "winter golf" ones set up.
Golf pro shop employees were inattentive, didn't mention the greens issue and were more interested in sharing something on their iPhones.
Previous times were much better, can't say if it's a one off or not.
I played well so I was pleased overall but . . .
Worst overall game play experience
Overbooked, terrible, 45 min per hole terrible experience, didn't get to finish a round of golf. Front 9 took 5 hours. Each hole had 3-4 waiting at the tee box. Done playing this course overall and staff doesn't care, just money hungry. Nothing was attempted to move things along.
Pelham Bay
The course was in poor conditions. Some tee boxes were rock solid and barely able to jam a tee into the ground. Lots of dead spots throughout and poor conditions. Not worth the full amount.
Temporary greens
It would be helpful in making a decision to play if the course would notify golf now about temporary greens. 4 of 18 is a lot with the remainder dressed.
never playing here again
I always say I'm not playing here, they mess at least something up every time but this is the last time for sure.
1st time playing they overcharged us on the golf now rate and when we showed them the email they said they couldn't refund it they'd have to give us credit. I can't believe that, what company can charge cards and take cash but can't give refunds? Anyway they gave us receipts and said our names were in the system for the credit. Next time I went they did not honor the credit.
2nd time we teed off about an hour late, you'd think for $70 on a course that only averagely/ poorly kept they would at least respect your tee time and not overbook like crazy but they don't care.
3rd time got through 14 holes in just under 6 hours and we skipped a head to see if we could jump in anywhere and there was a group the 16th green with the group ahead of them pulling up to the 18th green. The rangers don't do anything, they just drive in circles all day. On top of that the greens are poorly kept and covered in sand all the time.
By far the worst valued course I've ever played on and its expensive and the staff doesn't know what they're doing.
Split Rock
Challenging course. Long and narrow but very fun! I'd like to try Pelham Bay next time since I've heard it's a bit more forgiving. The lunch + 2 drinks deal is solid!! Pace of play was OK (this was a sunday afternoon so it was expected).
Challenging track, bring bug spray
My opinion the most challenging tracks amongst the NYC public courses (not counting Trump). Had an early tee time so pace was great. Considering the amount of play this place gets, conditions are playable. If the tips are pushed back, you must be a big hitter unless you're looking to play for lay ups on the harder holes. To me the front 9 plays a bit tougher due to more narrow fairways. One thing Pelham bay is know for is for its super mosquitos. Despite practically pouring bug spray all over myself, these super mosquitos still bite and manage to bite through clothing as well.
Hidden gem in the Bronx
Well maintained great value
Weekends could take 4-5 hours but during the week pace is very good
Current deal with 2 beverages and lunch a no Brauner
Pelham Bay
The layout for Pelham Bay is definitely quite easier than Split Rock but still enjoyable. There are minimal hazards, open fairways, but greens still have plenty of undulation. Conditions are acceptable from tee box to fairway. Green conditions/speed vary from hole to hole but overall in good condition, just need each one to be consistent.
Fun forgiving track
Played again 4 days later in a hot/humid early afternoon round. Forgiving track that won't punish you too bad from bad tee shots. Despite being the easier track next to its sister course, Pelham is not by any means a joke. High handicappers will be surprised they won't break 100 and mid handicappers will be fooled on putts because local knowledge helps on where to aim on approach shots. Low handicappers who get off the tee well should score low depending on how the putter is working.
Conditions on were pretty much average. A handful of tee boxes and greens were beat up, fairways were in average conditions based on NYC municipal standards. With that being said, you also have to realizability Pelham/Split Rock gets a ton of play.
Staff is usually friendly which makes this place for the most part enjoyable. The only thing I detest about playing here is the mosquitoes. You have to remind yourself to not only bring bug spray, you must soak yourself in it to brave the bugs.
Good time
Fairways and greens were great. The tee boxes and rough were thick. Bunkers were NYC public, so you get the picture
Pleasant early round on Saturday
I know this place is infamous for slow pace and late starting time. With an early round the review is just based on today. First time playing Pelham this year and pleasantly surprised on the conditions. Both courses here get a ton of play so tee boxes, fairways, and greens were in great shape especially for a NYC muni course.
Layout is open and forgiving on tee shots. Great course for a mid-high handicap player. Advance players who get off the tee well would enjoy a handful of holes that play long. Some greens have tricky slopes to them so local knowlegde helps. Overall a fun forgiving layout where you could let your tee shot loose.
I had a pleasant experience
This was my first round of golf and it was a great experience. The course was in great condition with wide fairways. I completed my round in just under 4 hours then enjoyed my lunch in the Grill. I look forward to playing here again in the near future.
Split Rock
Split Rock is the tougher of the two courses but it's got a great layout with tight fairways and interesting greens with plenty of undulation. Overall course conditions are good, tee boxes and rough need some work but I can live with that. Fairways and greens are in great condition, which is most important in my opinion. Pace of play was good since we were one of the first groups out. Any time after 10am, you're looking at a 6+ hour round.
Steve rydwe
Played the front in 130 and the round in 320 on wed afternoon at 248 played the blues and course was great tee to green a little thin around greens and greens not rolling great but very good for the amount of play at this course
Great layout. Only thing going for it right now
First time playing the course, booked a 1:13pm hot deal for 40 bucks. Was supposed to play on the pelham course (i think all golfnow plays on pelham-the worse of the two), but poor tee time managment by both the starter and the pro shop changed things. I went as a single, but was paired with a two-some. When I went to the first tee, the two-some didnt show, and a group that was suppsoed to tee off 30 minutes prior was late because they were getting lunch. the starter allowed this group to cut off many other groups trying to get off at their designated time. I was now 20 mintues past my tee time where I finally made the decsion on my own to join a 2 some going off the Split Rock course at 1:45. I dealt with the starter at that course, explained my situation and he hesitantly let me off with the two some. Pace, as I would imagine would be similar if not worse on the pelham course was brutal. No ranger to move people a long. Played the front in about 2 hours 40 minutes, got to the back and hit a wall. First 6 holes took 2 hours 30 minutes, so I left. Greens were in fairly good shape, a bit firm. Fairways and tee boxes need water. I realize there has been minimal rain recently but this course is dried out. can be hard to put your tee in the ground. rough is whispy and dried out with dirt patches here and there. Had to fix my lie so i wasnt hitting off of dried out dirt a few times. Course layout is great, this course could be one of the best in the area if it better manicured (mostly just watered) and better managed. Mostly if it was better managed. Big let down.
Playing at Pelham Bay (Pelham/Split Rock)
my foursome would have had a greater experience were it not for the foursome behind us who got very impatient and hit a ball at us twice, once on the 9th hole and once on the 18th hole. They failed to take into account that we couldn't advance because we had a foursome 1/2 a hole in front of us. It took 5 hours to play around, which is the norm on the Split Rock and Pelham courses. Ideally, it should take 4 hours 15 minutes to 4 hours 30 minutes.
Big time delay
I booked a late time for me 2:57. After booking I was informed of an hour delay.
The actuall delay was more like 2 hours. They moved me up to a 2:09 time on the sister course that didn't tee off until after 4 pm
All day affair
Went on a Thursday at 2:30 hoping that I'd be able to get in 18 under 5 hours. First 9 was a little over 3 hours so I called it quits because their was two groups ahead of mine on. The 11th.
There was no ranger on the course to regulate the pace of play, seemed like they were understaffed but makes sense given that they charge next to nothing to play 18 including lunch and 2 beers.
