Great day at the Golf Club of houston. Photo submitted by jmz320 on 08/25/2015
Bad course conditions
I brought my dad and brother down to meet me on a business trip to play the shell Houston open course. When calling ahead ahead we were told the course had been aerated a couple weeks ago and the greens were a little bumpy. The entire course was unplayable. The fairways were almost all dirt. We had to move are ball around just to find a little patch of grass. The rough was pretty much all dirt around the greens and fringe. The landscaping was pretty bad. There were weeds everywhere. The shell sign on the 18th hole had weeds growing all around it and inside the sign. Paying over $100 per player for these conditions was a joke.
A little bit off for first timer
Beautiful course. No complaints about the condition. Would have been nice to know when I booked that a tournament was scheduled to go off right after. Pace of play felt a little rushed because they seemed to be pushing us through. Maybe don't schedule tee times before your tournament then? Forecaddie was borderline rude wanted me to show I had pre tipped before we even got back to the clubhouse.
PGA Championship Course
Absolutely fantastic course. There are very few courses where you can tee it up the same as the pros and feel how the course plays for them.
The price is very reasonable for the experience and the round will be memorable.
Great course
I played the tournament course today. It was one of the most enjoyable round that I have played in a long time. The course was in impeccable shape. The greens were as smooth and true as any that I have ever putted on. The weather was wonderful. The food was great and the service was outstanding. Overall, just a great experience. I will highly recommend this course to everyone.
A Chance to Feel Like a Pro
After flying down to the area on Friday my group and I played GC of Houston on a windy Saturday. When we got there we were excited to see most of the stands from the Shell still up and for the 2 scratch players from my group the tourney tees still available for play. The course itself was immaculate as was the all grass range. The greens where lightning fast the day we played with some really tough pin placements. Overall there is no doubting the course is difficult even from 6600 or so but the reward of playing on a tour proven course is worth the grind. Most holes are bordered by water, bunkering, or brush and I highly suggest if you can get a little wild off the tee to play up a set just to allow for a little more room for error. Also take a caddie if you have the spare coin for it. We had Adam (dude must have laser range finders for eyes) and not only was he hilarious but he nailed so many yardages and reads that we wouldn't have seen.
Great to see this course offered at 60 bucks on the week-end. Normally, alot more. Everything was okay, greens were somewhat fast and the caddie knew the course and was very pleasant. All and all, a good day!
Beautiful Day
Had a great round in perfect conditions. The course was in as good of shape as I had seen. Our caddie was friendly and professional. We had a great day at an excellent course.
Great Course, but Overall Experience Just Okay
The range spots where way too narrow and the line hadn't been moved at all that day so there was very little turf to hit off of. The short game area was flawless though.
We went inside before our rounds for gatorade/snacks and waited 10+ minutes for service and received poor service when we were finally helped.
The course was in great condition, is a great layout, and our caddie did a really good job.
A must play in houston
The course was extremely challenging and that was what we were looking for. 1 of only 11 courses you can play in the country that a pga tour event is held on. JT was our caddie and he was very friendly. The course was in pristine condition but the wind was very gusty. We played from the tips and if was long but a once in a lifetime opportunity. I hope to go back next year and play from the regular tees. The greens roll so true.
Excellent course...highly recommend it!!
I got to play this course two weeks ago with a couple of members. The staff was super cool because they let me go out without a forecaddie which isn't the norm for non-members. I got the 2nd tee time of the day and the weather was perfect. The course was getting prepped for the Shell Houston Open so there was quite a bit of construction going on but who cares; I got to play a PGA Tour course two weeks before the event. The greens were in great shape and the the fairways were immaculate. I've played all around the world and this is one of my top 5 favorite courses. Hope they keep the tournament at this venue. Its great for a PGA Tour event.
Gotta have Graham
Course conditions were impeccable. My guests loved playing with the grandstands being put up. Graham is the BEST! Enhanced our experience and round. Played with high handicappers so Graham also gave lessons. Spot on with yardages and green reads. Weather was an A+++.
This course SHOULD be on your list!
Love this course!
Love this course! It's always nice to play a course you see the pros play on TV. To put yourself in the same spots you see them play on a Sunday afternoon, and see how you can measure up. Nice!
The course is in excellent condition. The fairways are smooth and always provide a perfect lie. The rough, while thick and grabby, is fair. The greens while smooth and true, were a little slower than usual (about a 9 - 9.5), but typical for this time of year. They are getting ready for the Houston Open, so letting the course fill out for tournament setup.
It was cartpath only to keep the playing area in good condition, so no complaints there, however it does slow your round down to 4-4.5 hours.
Our fore-caddy, Melvin, is top notch. He provided input when requested, but pretty much let us play our game without interference. Great personality and fun to have along.
Of course, it's a little pricey, but you get what you pay for. We try to get GCOH in our monthly rotation once a month.
The Shell Houston Open Course
The course was immaculate - which is what you would expect 4 weeks before the Shell Houston Open starts. Navigating the course is not easy but the caddie was great, providing the right target line for our skill level and helping us read the greens. This was the first time I have ever completed a round of golf in 3 hours in Houston (normally 4.5 - 5 hrs). An early start and only 2 of us helped. Overall an expensive round of golf but if you haven't played the course well worth the money especially if you can play when the course is in such good condition. Go on, spoil yourself!
Play where the pros play
Always a great track and home for the only PGA tour stop in Houston.
In excellent shape
Played about 5 weeks before the SHO and just after UH's AAII. Course was in excellent condition - as good as I've ever played. The greens were surprisingly slow but to be expected in prep for a PGA tourney.
Will definitely be back.

I played today with my Dad thinking it was going to be a course in great condition for the money and no way. Exactly the way bdavedawg20 described it. Course is horrible shape. bad experience and we complained all the way home. What a waste.
