Great day at the Golf Club of houston. Photo submitted by jmz320 on 08/25/2015
Challenging Course
Challenging, long course with lots of water hazards. Thick Rough and lots of bunkers. Shot placement is critical to score well....
It's back!!
Course is getting back into its form again. A few soft spots in the fairway and the rough is thick, but it's still very nice. Can't wait to play it in the fall!!
Hi huynguyen1! Thanks for the review. We are really excited the course is coming back into its form and we are happy to hear you are too! We look forward to seeing you again soon.
Challenging course
If I could only spend more time in the fairways would been nice , because the second cut was like 3 inch higth
Makining hard to find The ball
Other than that the course it's nice.
Medium to difficult level course.
Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your recent experience at Golf Club of Houston! We truly appreciate what our golfers have to say. We hope you will come tee it up again soon.
2nd time playing
Great course. Better to play around jan feb when getting ready for SHO
Thank you for coming back to Golf Club of Houston for a second time. We hope you will come back for a third round soon!
Loved the course, But...
The course looks a lot different without all the grandstands when the Shell Houston open is here. I kept looking for the beer stands. Lol. Loved the course, played from the Blue tees which were still challenging. Kept looking back at the Gold champion tees and the Tips where the Pros tee off from and let me tell you, its a totally different course from back there. Them guys are GOOD. The course was in ok condition, rough was a little long (tough) and 3-4 holes needed more time to grow the grass where they had done some work. But over all it was a great golf course to play and a great day of golf. Even if it was 99* and hot as heck.
Not the best conditions, but a good value through Golfnow
Based on the recent reviews regarding course conditions, I had my expectations set really low before playing. I knew the greens were recently punched and the fairways were not going to be SHO conditions, but considering the deep Golfnow discount, it was worth the money spent. I've played here during normal conditions, and right now it is far from "normal". But if you are willing to accept the subpar conditions as a trade-off for a discounted round at GC of Houston, then it can be considered a pretty good deal. One thing that was disappointing is it is "cart-path only" throughout the entire round. I guess they are trying to allow their fairways to recover from flooding a couple months ago.
Course in poor condition
I played the course last Friday afternoon. The fairway was in poor condition, lots of bare patches. The greens were freshly punched and putt just wont hold the line. Kinda disappointed.
Shell Open Course
Nice course, though it was under significant construction/maintenance. Many greens had a ring of grass removed around the perimeter and several bunker areas had large areas of grass removed -- leaving large patches of dirt. Several coolers with water were empty and there were no opportunities to buy any liquid or snacks anywhere during the course -- which is a travesty in 99 degree temperatures.
Bad summer conditions for tournament course
The course is not in great condition. The greens are long and hairy, there are chunks of sod missing around bunkers and greens. There are bare patches in the fairways, especially on the back nine. Even at the great golf now price, it will not be a good experience. Better off waiting until the winter and pay more.
We apologize that your experience at Golf Club of Houston was not up to par. We would like to offer you a return voucher for a complimentary round later this summer when the sod work has been completed. Please reach out to me directly at gcofhouton@gmail.com.
Absolutely dead fairways
The fairways were mostly dirt and weeds. I had no idea the course was in such bad shape. Very disappointing. When I asked a question, the guy in the pro shop laughed and made a remark aloud for his minions to enjoy that I don't get that Golf Now bookings as if somehow I had a lower status at his course. I've played St. Andrews old course, Pinehurst and Pebble this year. They didn't have an issue with me being on their courses. Like I said...very disappointing.
Sorry to hear you didn't have a good experience at Golf Club of Houston. Please reach out to me directly at gcofhouton@gmail.com to discuss this further. We would be happy to provide you with a return voucher for a complimentary round later this summer when the sod work has been completed.
Amazing golf course
The course was in good shape. The pace of play was amazing and the practice facility was incredible. Great place to play and will recommend it to every one I know.
Thank you for taking the time to tell us about your experience at Golf Club of Houston! We are happy to hear you enjoyed the practice facility. We hope to see you again soon!
Wasn't that bad for the price
I got a good deal on Golfnow, paid 39$. I read some reviews and heard what condition the course was in, the guy at the pro shop asked if I knew how the course looked and told me that if I was expecting the course to look like it did in April for the SHO I would be disappointed I told him I already knew what to expect... Everyone of the workers were super nice, very helpful, and made our experience a great one. Although the course was not in the best shape and it was hot as heck, I'd play it again for the same price... I can't to play it when it gets in better shape.
Thank you for your feedback! We are so happy to hear our staff was nice, helpful, and that they made your experience a great one! Please come tee it up again soon!
Great Course
Fairways were damaged due to floods. Also, the greens were recently aerated. GC did give us a free round for future visit, this was much appreciated.
Should Have Been Forwarned
Had played course in early June. Understood the rough conditions at that time - recovering from extremely rainy season. Believe course was worse this time. Should have been advised of this from course staff or GolfNow -- ESPECIALLY that it was cart path only. Maybe I should have asked BUT with the terrible condition of course, I feel that I should have been told what I was getting into before booking through GolfNow and/or arriving at course
Better to watch the pros here than to play
The deal for this course came with green fees, carts and forecaddies for $100/player. When I set the tee time, I was told you have to have a forecaddie unless you tee off 1:30 or later. I was also told they were switch grass, so the course shape was marginal. We elected to take the 1:30 tee time because we did not want the extra expense for the forecaddies(20-50 tip) each. When we reached the first tee, it said "cart paths only". The pro shop could have told us this prior to the round, like when we booked it. This is Houston in July. It was probably 110 degrees with heat factor and made for a brutal round. Unless you can hit right next to the carts paths, you will spend a lot of time in the extreme heat here. Save your money and play 2 or more rounds at courses that let you ride the cart to your ball. The fairways were not soft, and golf carts would not have hurt them. The greens were in transition, so 100 for a round that you practically have to walk is not a bargain.
The course was in bad shape again
This is the second time in a couple of months I've had a group to play this course. Both times the course wasn't in great condition. There was dirt on almost every fairway and the greens had just been air raided. Not to mention it hasn't rained in a couple weeks and it was cart path only. I expect more from the signature course in Houston. If it's like this again it will be the last time I play there.
Terrible shape
Was really looking forward to playing, especially with a $99 rate through GolfNow, but felt like money was wasted at end of day. Greens were punched, which was fine and totally expected this time of year in Houston. However, they have lost many of their fairways and overall the course was in terrible shape. I hope they will be able to get it back in shape for the Shell next year. I would not recommend playing the course now, especially not for the money you'll have to spend. Better rounds can be found in the area for less.
Course in Horrible Condition
I took 3 clients Friday July 10th expecting at least grass in the fairways. With green fee and caddie tip spent 600 dollars.
The course rates in the top couple of worst conditioned courses i have ever played. It has not rained in 2 weeks and it is cart path only.
There are huge swaths of fairway with NO grass (not some NO grass) on it. This is on nearly every hole. The overseeded bent grass is all dying out on the greens so there are large areas of damage on the greens.
This course is obviously in better condition for the PGA tour but it is horrible now. They should be charging 50 bucks to play not $150 bucks right now. It is that bad.
Tournament Course
The fairway and greens were horrible, no cart girl, no where to clean your ball...pace of play horrible, no marshal, and the staff had this attitude of I don't care....and if you book a tee time at this golf course, they should advise you in advance of the conditions of the course.....scale 1 to 10 I will give it a 3, thAts how bad it was....
