Great day at the Golf Club of houston. Photo submitted by jmz320 on 08/25/2015
GC of Houston / Redstone
What a great course. The tee boxes, fairways and qreeens were in excellent shape, and this is January.
I have played the course several times, and enjoy it more and more each time.
The fore caddie was really good and personable. Can't wait to play again.
greens were a big challenge
The course was extremely green, plush and beautiful. A lot of bunkers needed work but was manageable. The greens were overgrown on purpose in preparation for the Shell Houston Open so they played extremely slow. I understand the reason but it cost me several strokes because it was unnatural to putt as hard as you needed to. It made putting more frustrating than normal and took a little bit away from the experience. The fairways were slow also but probably saved a few shots from going out of bounds or in water. I found out they were slow because of previous rain and again a bit overgrown in preparation for the Shell Houston Open but when you hit off them with your irons it was sweet. Nice clean divots.
Overall, it was a fantastic experience and the course was a fun challenge. Caddie was a lot of help and made it fun as well. Even with the challenges it was worth it.
The course has been in better shape
I played this course in September and it was in great shape with fast and true greens. This time I played it the greens were super slow and looked like they hadn't been taken care of. The fairways needed mowing also. All of the water jugs were empty. Still a fun course to play but putting was a pain due to lack of maintenance. There was some kind of tournament going on also and they mixed paying customers with the tournament play. I have never seen anything like that. Play was real slow. The group in front of us (tournament group) was painful to follow.
Not up to par
Too much sand on greens.
Had to hit the ball to able to get the ball move on greens.
Seen it Better
Greens were extremely slow and bumpy. Traps needed some attention.
Love the facility and, especially, the course -- must have caught it at a bad time.
Challenging Course. It will eat you alive if your not on (A) Game.
The Course is a great course to play with a group of four. Its has some challenging holes and some easy ones as well. The first hole seems simple if you par it. Don't let that fool you. It will bite you on your way in if you don't play well. Everything about this course, and club house is well taking care of. The staff is very welcoming as you walk in the door. If you ever get a change to play this course play it from the blue tees. If you feel froggy the have at it from the tips. Just bring a lot of balls with you.
This course has great character and tradition. I'll challenge anyone there.
This course has great character and tradition. You must know how to work the ball and control it fiercely! I'll play for a sponsorship for membership at Redstone (the golf club). I want to train there for at least 1 year prior to the open. I'm very intelligent and play hard. My life is straight and im ready to train and work with a coach full time. Chad Rawlings
Tournament Course
The course is very nice! I had walked it during the tournament in previous years, so I knew what I was going into. At the end of the day, 2 lost golf balls, good shots, bad shots and a great time with good friends. The price on Golfnow was reasonable. Well worth it.
Golf Etiquitte
The course was in good condition the sand traps needed a little attention the staff was quite friendly. the pace of play was the absolutely the worst there was a group in front of ours 4 players with 1 riding along watching. they had no regards as to there pace we got to the 1st tee and they were walking off going to the 2nd, by the time we finished the 1st we had caught them had to wait on the 2nd tee several minutes. After that it was one of the worst displays of etiquette I have ever seen. ther were no marshall's on the course or anyone else for that matter. By the time we had played 4 or 5 holes we could have hit a whole bucket of balls waiting to hit our next shots. they never acknowledged us and did not seem to care as if they were the only ones on the course. After the turn a cart guy came by and seen us waiting and drove right on. We were on the 10th green when the pro shop ( pro or attendant) came by and had a cart in tow I assume to take to someone else on the course. he waited for them to finish and watched as we played up and no doubt he could tell there pace was way off. So I would never recommend for someone to spend the excess money it cost to play here and not be able to enjoy there time. this was a totally ridiculous way to spend a afternoon of golf with your buddies. I could go on forever but it probably wouldn't change a thing
Very nice
Course was in great shape. We played in the early afternoon. Not to many people out in the heat. Fantastic pace of play. Would go back without a doubt........
A Thrill to Play the Track of the Pros
Our anticipation at playing the famous Tournament Course, conquered by the pros every spring, was high; and, I'm pleased to report, we were not let down. While not in the same tournament condition (by now the rye over-seed is gone leaving the bermuda base), the course was in first-rate condition. The fairways were lush, the greens smooth (rolling at about 10) and the bunkers were superb. All the staff were extremely friendly and our forecaddy was not only very helpful but also extremely polite and understanding (at too many bad shots). Overall, in spite of the poor golf, a thrilling experience.
GolfNow Hit it Out of the Park
Just got back from playing Redstone. WOW. Got lucky and saw the discount fee for one, including tax $51.25, was paired up with 3 others. Checked in with the pro-shop, and 3 minutes later I was on the driving range. Course was in great shape, greens had been aerated about 4 weeks ago, but still rolled very very well. Wide wide fairways, big big greens. You should not miss a fairway or a green. I played from the blues at 6,600 yds, I'm a 10 hdcp and shot 73, one over. Next time to make it more challenging I'm playing the tips at 7,400 just to see what happens. Its gonna be fun. It was a Friday afternoon, not many people playing and everything was green and clicking. Cart girl was there when you need a drink. My opinion, grow the rough, narrow the fairways.
MAJESTIC SCENERY
fairways and rough was in great condition, despite being saturated from raining for 2 hrs, but I waited it out and was able to play and was glad I stayed. course played fairly easy since it was so soft. shot an 81 first time there. pretty much had an entire PGA course all to myself. I will say greens were not great, kinda furry, and didn't roll well, very suprised, even though they punched them about a week prior, looked like they hadn't cut em in a few days or rolled em in I don't know how long. Would have been upset if I paid $180, but I didn't...Overall experience was good I would recommend checking it out at least once a year. Was cool to size my game up against pros. Looks like I need some work still.
Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink.
Greens recently aerated, poor conditions. Great caddie service. 95 degrees and humid, not an ounce of water in any of the water coolers, ridiculous, could've been dangerous had our caddie not picked up extras. Normally love our rounds here. Not so much this time, even though we only paid $60 through GolfNow. Fairways were okay.
Where the pros play!
Course is awesome! Fairways were perfect! Greens were lightly sanded but rolling true! I got a great deal for this course!!!
I love Golf Now!!!
Hope this is not a sign of things to come
Have played the past 4 years in May after Shell Open and always expect to see a worn down course from all the "want to be pros" playing in corp. tourneys that do not fix divots. But this is the first year I saw a drop off in service and I wonder is it related to the new management team over looking the little things. There was a steady stream of golfers waiting to tee off after a tournament was completed and we were waiting on carts. As our tee time approached, many of the golfers decided to just walk back to the pro shop to remind them no one had a cart and there was plenty of empty carts in the front. Unfortunately the one person was overwhelmed and we all pitched in and helped clear the carts of the trash before putting our bags in place. We all preceded to make it to the 1st tee where no starter was available but everyone was nice and we grouped ourselves while I noticed the others started off on the back nine. Later in the round I noticed an employee bringing out a few fresh carts to the golfers on the course because of dead batterys. Seems some of the carts have seen their best days. I guess I always equate price to quality of course and service when I golf. Good greens and decent fairways is what I think most golfers expect but when a course gets to the 3 digit price zone there is a certain quality of service you come to expect. You expect great golf carts at Wildcat; fast slick geens at Cypress Lakes; consistent green conditions at Clear Creek despite the amount of players each day; carpet soft fairways at Moody Gardens...this is what you come to expect. The difference between those courses and Golf Club of Houston is major and this course is worth the price but if the service and quality of course continues to slip then that price becomes a major factor. The greens were fast and good condition despite the amount of traffic but there is only so much that can be done. Fairways were good and not bare compared to other courses and the rough was in good shape. I enjoy playing here for the challenge and the course design and as stated before is well worth the price if service does not continue to slip.
Most fun and best round yet
I played the month before the Houston Open so I could see where I was when the pros where playing. The Staff was courteous and the most professional I have come across. (Not even my club that I had a membership with was that nice). The course was the best I have played and the lies were confidence building and enjoyable. Every shot I made was from a lie that was comparable to most fairways around The Woodlands. I only had one mishit in the fairway/fairway bunker and a few that I didn't get GIR, which made it the best I played since starting last year (80). My confidence was at a high because of the course conditions and the friendly staff. The company I had made it that much better. Thanks Golf Now. I will pony up and play again soon...
Best Golfing Experience in Houston
Given that the Shell Houston Open is here in a couple weeks, the course is in absolutely phenomenal shape. Every employee, all the food, drinks, caddies are superb. From the moment you arrive you just get the feeling "yea, this is going be good". Played a lot of the top courses in the US, public or private, and I highly recommend it.
Still In Awe!
After walking the course for the SHO and the Golf Channel Amateur Tour, it has been a dream to play here one day. That day finally came and it was well worth the wait! The course was in amazing condition. I couldn't possibly think of 1 thing to complain about. A must play!
