Poston Butte Golf Club
About
Located just southeast of Phoenix in the town of Florence, Poston Butte Golf Club offers some of the most affordable golf in the area. The course has desert attributes but the best part about its design is that it is more forgiving than some of the overgrown desert courses found in north Scottsdale. The golf course features 49 sand traps strategically placed around the landing zones and greensides and water comes into play on two holes. It is generally a player-friendly layout though with wide fairways and ample room off the tees. The par-3 17th is the signature hole, which is known for its challenging island green. Poston Butte also offers a double-ended, targeted grass range and a short game area.

Slow play!
The round took over 5 hours to play. Extremely slow play. No excuse for this. The pace of play over shadowed the course. Always have a great tome with family on this course but a round over 5 hours is unacceptable.
This course was in better shape than any other course I saw in the area for it being early July. Fairways were very healthy and greens were in pristine condition.
Poston Butte
Good layout, not too difficult – unlike Ak-Chin Southern Dunes which is unforgiving if you are not accurate. Hole 18 fairway needs repair. Some greens are bit slow. Overall, it is a nice neighborhood course.
Poston July 2020
First time playing Poston Butte and had no problems. Course layout is direct and easy on the driver, can miss the fairway and still be able to find and play.. Greens were decent given the recent maintenance. Par 3 holes were nice and challenging surrounded by bunkers. Some of the fairways on back 9 were spotty but still playable. Bring plenty of water or buy plenty from the beverage cart who I’ve seen 5 times during the round.
Nice Overall Experience
Despite the warmth of summertime in Arizona, it was an enjoyable experience. Course had some rough areas in some fairways(summertime issues) but overall in good shape. Staff was friendly and helpful. Covid-19 hampered the relaxation time afterward with social time (food and beverage). Thank you.
Good course
My brother and I really liked this course and had a great time as this was the first time we have played PBGC. Everyone who works there was very friendly and they all helped us make sure we were prepared for our round as soon as we arrived. The course was mostly in good shape except for a few of the fairways but again, we were already prepared for the situation so not a big deal. We will definitely be back again soon for another round of golf at this wonderful hidden gem in the desert!
Poston Butte
Friendly Staff, great pace of play, Good layout, great practice facilities and an enjoyable day out as a visiting Golf Professional! Thank you!
Not at its best
The punching and sanding of the greens from four weeks ago is filling in but the greens are considerably slower at the moment.
Unfortunately a good number of fairways are now going through the patchy thin stage so often had a tight dirt lie.
They will get it back eventually, I"m sure.
good track
I like the layout, greens in good shape. Fairways are typically in great shape but this time not so much. lots of burnt out patches. I don't think this is indicative of anything other than they missed the timing of killing off the winter rye relative to the Bermuda coming in. playing partners said only a few weeks ago course was in best shape in years
Fun day at PB
Course was a little over 2 weeks from when they punched the greens. Greens are probably 85% healed. Roiled pretty smoothly on most putts.
The greens were fairly slow, that would be the only complaint. Fairways are in transition, but that is to be expected.
We will definitely be back and I’m sure the greens will be up to speed.
Pretty good summer course
Most of the course was in good shape. They were in the process of aerating the fairways so five of the fairways had plugs all over. Every one of the greens was heavily sanded and looked to have been aerated recently. I would give it a couple weeks before scheduling another round here.
Same great course
The weather got hot, the slowdown in business has occurred and what better time to punch and sand the course. Last week it was perfect, , now the greens are full size round punched with nicely swept sand and they started on the fairways also. Still a great course but it plays differently for a couple of weeks.
Golf within an Oasis in the Desert
Summer conditions are kicking in however this course presents plenty of challenge without overbearing, manufactured difficulty. The greens were soft (from last night’s rain most likely) and rolling true around a 11 on the stimp. The fairways had some browned spots and thin lies in some elevated areas, however for the majority of the playing lines was in fantastic May summer shape. The bunkers had a great texture to them to allow for your choice of shot.
The strategy of this course is fun, nothing of the diabolical Pete Dye variety but enough to make you think about your shot before you step up to hit. Doglegs and bunkers in all the right spots (if you play the right tees!) with sloped elevated greens. Fun time out in the desert of Florence. A course that provides fun, tranquility and a true golfing experience in the silence of this neighborhood course.
Nice inviting layout
It’s definitely one of the nicer courses in the area. Wouldn’t mind playing it once a month. A lot of the holes have their own character. Will definitely be bringing people that visit me to this course to play.
Course was in teriffic shape
Love this place and play it anytime I can find a rate within my budget. I thought the entire course was in great shape, tees, fairways, greens were perfect. Wasn't in the sand and I know they are not being raked but they looked alright. And the pro shop was selling cold draft Kiltlifter for $2. It must have been aging but tasted great to us. Saw the beverage cart two or three times per nine.
